Unfortunately, the Bolshevik coup brought about the creation of a host of Bantustans, including yours, and the ensuing infestation of Kolyvan / Reval with Estonians, as I am sure it would have been a lot better if the previous population hadn't been displaced.

There are many interesting places from the Soviet era in Estonia. Paldiski west of Tallinn was mainly a Soviet town. Heading north from Tallinn the Lahemaa national park has some items of interest, further north is the town of Sillamae which in Soviet times was know as the 'secret city'. Further north is the ghost town of Viivikonna and then you get to Narva on the Russian border. Estonia one side of the river and Russia the other side. The islands have items of interest but can't get to most of them in winter. You could take the ice road if open to other islands. Naissar island has all the mines that were pulled out of the Baltic Sea. Latvia and Lithuania have a lot of Soviet history. Good luck.

@Henry Tallinn city centre is visited daily by both Estonian and Russian speaking Tallinners who live in desely populated areas. So there are much more Russian speakers being in city centre. Speaking about language requirements- now Russian language knowledge is more in demand because of COVID (it's always an advantage and in Tallinn there's no problem to find personnel who speaks all these 3 languages due to covid joblessness and those who speak Russian along with English and Estonian compete out those who speak just Estonian and English- even if Russian is not mentioned as a requirement in job offer). And Bald and bankrupt visits places usually not visited by tourists
@rasmusseninvincible75633 жыл бұрын
@Henry It depends. Most elderly Estonians prefer Russian, most younger Estonians prefer English. Some young Estonians who learn Russian at that moment would prefer Russian in order to train language skills. Please note that there are also Tallinners with mixed (most often of Estonian AND Russian background) so they can be considered as both Estonians and Russians and they could recognise both languages as native. And when you start to negotiate with someone you don't know whether he or she is Estonian or Russian or somebody else. P.S. many Tallinners prefer to avoid talking at all ( e.g. when you ride a taxi you don't say a single word, you chose between more than 40 offered languages and point out all the info in your app)
@rasmusseninvincible75633 жыл бұрын
@Henry well although youth doesn't mind so much about history, many Estonians perceive Russian as a language of occupant and many Russians perceive Estonian as a state-pressed language. Under such circumstances it would be advisable even for locals to speak English as a neutral language. And youth practice more often such a remedy in this language-quarelling environment

Most Estonians don’t speak Russian, you’re much better off with English :) If you want a Russian and Soviet vibe check out Lasnamäe! Not much to do there but you always manage to find something interesting locals take for granted :) Another thing that a lot of people are doing right now is winter swimming. If you go to port Noblessner you can get a real Estonian experience and take a dip (everyday there are people swimming there, join them!). At the same port is an ex military base and a ship that is turned into a museum (ask a local and they can point you in the right direction) Edit: there is no place to change clothes at Noblessner (most people who swim there go with car) so maybe try going to Pirita beach instead, while you’re in Pirita, there is a monument in Pirita sailing port from the 1980 Moscow Olympics that you can check out. If winter swimming isn’t your thing you can try cross country in Pirita or Nõmme. Rentals are really cheap and it’s a true estonian experience

@Jake Johansson No Russian isn’t easier to understand for us by any means. Estonian isn’t similar to Russian at all, Estonian is a Finnic-urgic language that is from an entirely different family and we don’t even have Russian loan words for the most part, but 1/3 of our vocabulary are German loan words. As a tourist you are better off with English here, especially in Tallinn, it is much more comfortable for Estonians to speak English.

Very strange to try to tell someone what languages they themselves can speak :D In the original comment I recommended Lasnamäe, where he can find that 30% Russian speaking minority group and enjoy all the Russian and Soviet vibes :)
@evikaasik3 жыл бұрын
@Jake Johansson No actually, someone who took a language class in the 30-50 years ago doesn’t necessary still speak that language, sure they can understand more than younger generations but still it’s only basic phrases and not enough to even put on a resume today when applying for a job. If tested today maybe would achieve an A1-A2 level which isn’t speaking a language. If you write that you are an A1 in a language on a CV, the person hiring would laugh
@evikaasik3 жыл бұрын
@Jake Johansson yes I know what you are trying to get at, but it isn’t quite applicable here. I think knowing multiple languages is a wonderful thing :) I would be happy to speak Russian. Unfortunately, that isn’t that case. Most Estonians speak fluent English and really suck at speaking Russian. Ask any ethnic Russian here, they’ll also say Estonians suck at speaking Russian. Although it’s an awesome language, it just isn’t the most practical or efficient way to get around Estonia today. This was just a travel tip, not a political statement.
