Having that Odin 2 / RP4Pro dilemma myself. Im thinking I will go for the RP4 Pro and then maybe a Steamdeck later down the line. Odin 2 would be great but price wise it just seems too close to the Steamdeck.
@adinwalls11 ай бұрын
Yup this is the thing. Here my working theory. If you have a good streaming setup in your home and don’t care too much about playing outside the house AND you want the benefits of Android. Then the Odin 2 could be the only device you’ll need for a very long time. However if you want a Steamdeck then the RP4 Pro is an excellent companion for emulation, streaming and Android gaming.
@wingsfromheaven878811 ай бұрын
Agreed. A Steam Deck is probably a better use of $330+ dollars than the Oden 2. They both achieve no-compromise retro gaming, but the Steam Deck adds seamless AAA gaming to the mix. I'm setting up a 1TB SD card for the Steam Deck using Batocera as we speak. I also just received a watermelon RP4 Pro which is awaiting setup. I expect that the RP4 Pro will provide a lifetime of top-tier retro gaming on-the-go. But any games that struggle or appear unreadable on the RP4 Pro, will go on the Batocera card for the Steam Deck. At least that's the plan.
@Podrick9411 ай бұрын

Hey awesome video, would like to ask you if you think the new Anbernic RG556 is a decent enough competitor to this. I am curious about what you think of it. They both cost around $200. Retroid has a better SoC but Anbernic has a 1080p AMOLED screen. Anbernic has the new T820 SoC which is A LOT better than the older T618, but still not as good as the D1100
@AE-bm4no10 ай бұрын
no one knows what the performance will really be with the 556 until they're in hand, but, a distinctive difference is the ergonomics on the 556 which sacrafices pocketability, so they're kind of polar opposites with respect to form factor.
@adinwalls10 ай бұрын
I like the idea of the Anbernic but I think people must await for reviews before ordering. It’s the perfect competitor though, more ergonomics, nicer (we shall see) and the “correct” stick layout for these devices with more power.
@azenyr10 ай бұрын
@@adinwalls I see many people complaining about the stick on the top but I agree with you, when you device gets on the PS2 and up level of performance, suddently the left stick becomes the main input for these consoles. So Anbernic having it on the top is actually a good idea

@adinwalls11 ай бұрын
The fan is definitely too loud. It’s something you get used to but in a silent room it will bother you. If this is a really concern to you I would wait to see if they fix it. Retroid are no doubt working furiously to fix any issues. I feel the screen fix was just a bandaid to buy them time until a more substantial update is done.

@adinwalls, between the RP4 (D900, 5000mAh) at $149, the RP4pro (D1100, 5000mAh) at $199, and the Odin base (SD845, 6600mAh) at $199, which do you think is the best value among these 3?
@adinwalls8 ай бұрын
I can’t actually remember everything about the Odin base. But you must also consider the RG556. The Retroid is great with its good joysticks. The Anbernic is a bit lower powered but has a stunning screen and great ergonomics. These are all tough choices. Now that I think of it I’m not sure the Odin Base is worth it anymore. I personally prefer the Retroid but I think most people would prefer the Anbernic RG556.

Read a ton of people are complaining the R2 button easily failed. Some of them within 24 hours. The reviewers did a good job hyping this device up. Got a lot of people suckered into taking preorders. Retroid's QC here was as horrible or even worse than the RP3 fiasco.
@adinwalls10 ай бұрын
I definitely dont think it’s as bad as the RP3/3+ situation, that was truly a fiasco. Retroid very quickly admitted the R2 fault and are offering a two year warranty on that issue. I was hoping it would be a lot more transparent - taki udon's video talked me out of the clear color since it just kinda wasn't. Went for the 16 bit. And now I'm waiting. ordered mine on the 15th but it was in the evening, so I'm guessing my order got lumped in with the batch that was supposed to ship - today, actually. I'm selling my 405m for this. It didn't really fit what I wanted out of a small pocketable handheld in shape, weight, comfort, or performance.
@adinwalls11 ай бұрын
Okay if the 405m didn’t work for you the Retroid may be the right fit
@colinmartin979711 ай бұрын
@adinwalls that's what I'm hoping. I think I just went into the 405m with slightly too high expectations for performance, even after tweaking and gammaOS, and the orientation of the left analog stick over the dpad made it feel awkward for a lot of retro gaming, and the thing was too heavy/slippery for its size (metal shell just is not my jam, as it turns out) and felt awkward to use laying on my side in bed. I actually went back to using my 35xx as my primary retro console alongside my steam deck. - I also converted my Samsung galaxy tab s7+ tablet into a daijisho console and it absolutely shreds, plug and play, runs ps2 and gamecube. The 35xx is still great for me because I toss it in one my my uniform pockets for downtime between calls as a medic. The steam deck can do the switch and wii u, and I like having the tablet now, but a super portable, toss in the backpack option was supposed to be the 405m - now hopefully the rp4pro. I didn't want the Odin 2 just because of the size. I wanted smaller, didn't even really mind the price. Now I'm just waiting for someone to update something vertical like the 353v with this chipset, or maybe just a hair bigger with a 4 inch screen (and not as bulky as the 405v) because that would be my perfect machine. I am a vertical form factor kinda person at the end of the day.

Hmm? They need to sort that fan out, that’s a big deal breaker for me. It does look shweet though 👌🏻

Ya I think the fan is too big an issue for them to leave. It’s chowing the battery

@@adinwalls It’s the one thing that is stopping me buying one, it’s too big an issue. I’m excited for what 2024 will bring, if it’s anything like ‘23 we are going to see some very interesting devices at competitive prices. Really looking forward to seeing the two new Miyoo models as well, if they indeed surface? The Miyoo Mini + is one of my faves.

I often watch TechDweeb just because of how fun his vids are. But I find I get caught up in the hype and pet peeves too quickly. I’d rather do my own testing and make up my own mind.
