Back in the early 1970's, the Third Doctor was UNIT's scientific advisor - especially during the period when the Time Lords locked his TARDIS so it couldn't leave earth. Kate Lethbridge-Stewart's father was in charge of UNIT then. That'd be season 7 and 8 of the classic series, especially.

Gotta get those episodes of the old show. The Doctor was captured by the Time Lords when he called them for assistance. They exiled him to Earth for several years until 'The Three Doctors', after which he got control of his TARDIS back from them. He hung about a few more years until he regenerated from 3 (played by Jon Pertwee) to 4 (played by Tom Baker). When he was exiled, the Time Lords landed him near a UNIT operation. Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart had met him a couple of times during his second incarnation (played by Patrick Troughton). Which is how he ended up on UNIT's payroll.

@@suziechapstick8236 I think this is it. Something similar was done with Jo in her TSJA episode. She waited for him for months/years and the only way she could make herself feel better about the Doctor abandoning her was thinking he just had not been able to return for her.

With Sarah-Jane it's a bit complicated. She left the show in 1976 as the 4th Doctor was called to Gallifrey for a story called _The Deadly Assassin._ Perhaps at that time she might have thought he died because he never came back, but she saw him again before _School Reunion._ In _K-9 and Company_, she receives a delivery (apparently from the Doctor) containing K-9 Mark III. In _The Five Doctors,_ she and various other characters are taken from their respective times and placed in the Death Zone on Gallifrey (K-9 was left behind). She mostly acts as companion to the 3rd Doctor (who she didn't expect to see again, having seen him regenerate) but also briefly meets 1st, 2nd and 5th Doctors, but the 4th was not there. She would probably have realised at that point that the Doctor had moved on.

Guys why are you all hating on Rose or Sarah Jane? They are humans, they can't be perfect, I personally think their jealousy is justified, firstly because the Doctor left Sarah Jane and never came back for her and secondly because the Doctor never told Rose about the other companions, so I genuinely think that they both have the right to feel jealous. (just my opinion)
@julietfischer50567 жыл бұрын
I think Sarah Jane was more annoyed at Rose's attitude than anything else, plus discovering that he was indeed alive (as the last time she saw him was in the Death Zone when 4 of him were brought together). Pound for pound, round for round, this is THE BEST past companion/new Doctor meeting of all. None has topped it so far. The emotion is just so spot on. And I love how he says "half a dozen" like it's unspecific(like few or a couple) when in reality it has been 6 times if you don't count the War Doctor. Plus Doctor 3(Pertwee) and Jo' was metaphorically like niece and uncle. Doctor 4 and Sarah acted like best friends. AND Sarah was one of the very few times where the Doctor left the companion as opposed to the companion leaving the Doctor. So the reactions between Sarah, Doctor 10, and Rose were very on point.

Rest in peace Elisabeth Sladen. You are one of doctor who's greatest faces.
Bringing Sarah Jane back was absolutely the most brilliant move they ever made. It was so sad that Liz passed away a few years later. She is sorely missed.

0:40 Toby Whithouse had probably forgotten about her meeting Peter Davison in The Five Doctors - though from a technical chronological standpoint that took place before her last meeting with Tom Baker - but the incarnation of the War Doctor made it correct from multiple perspectives

I started Dr. Who with David Tennant, and this is one of my favorites of his. I hadn't watched any of Elizabeth Sladen's earlier performances, but this episode did such a good job of showing why she was so important to the show's history. Glad this cameo helped get her a show and restablish her for new Who fans!

Very spooky at the start when Sarah Jane beholds the Tardis after 35 or so years and realizes what that means. Touching when the Doctor realizes Sarah Jane has never given up her inquisitive attitude, sense of adventure, or desire to help people in need. In those respects they were closely matched.

Rose wasn't nice to Sarah since the moment they met. At 1:30, rudely just start with "Whos she", then the look at 1:37, and "I am not his assistant" hear her tone when she said the word "assistant ".

“Half a dozen times since we last met.” The last time the Doctor met Sarah was in his fifth incarnation. At first glance this is a continuity error since he actually regenerated five times, but if you include the War Doctor, he had indeed regenerated half a dozen times. Sarah Jane was the only person he never lied to about his regenerations.

To be fair they are young and haven't watched the older stuff. I personally think Donna was the best companion in new Who because it was like a team rather than a love interest,, it worked much better that duo than Martha and Rose, who were madly infatuated by him. Donna just wanted to travel with him and see the universe, a more mature and stable relationship. I think Rose was better in series 1 with Eccleston as well, they turned her into Doctor lite in series 2 and it was quite cringe-worthy.

I'm 63 years old, as an American we started to get Dr Who shown in the early 70s with Jon Pertwee. I really became a fan when Tom Baker took over. I think I saw Jo Grant before she left but what I remember from that time was Tom Baker and the gorgeous Sarah Jane Smith, for seven seasons Baker was the quintessential Doctor and until Rose Tyler came around Sarah Jane was the best companion in my opinion. As far as intelligence and beauty goes the first Lady Romana played by Mary Tamm was in many ways the best companion ever. As a Time Lord herself she was as recent grad of the Academy and loved to point out the Doctors mistakes and never acted like a damsel in distress. The second Romana was a little more meeker which I believe was more to Bakers liking since he actually started dating her for a while. With so many great companions over the years when the show had it's reboot with Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper it was Sarah Jane Smith that was chosen to provide a connection to the classic Who era. The moment in the High School when Rose gets real jealous and Mickey makes a joke about the Mrs and the ex was hilarious. But before that when Sarah Jane talks about getting older it's one of the only times we hear from the companions side about the pain of being replaced for a newer model. Sarah Jane was so popular she even had her own show! Sadly she passed away in 2011 as the most loved companion of all time
@AnaGomez199410 жыл бұрын
I honestly love both characters, Rose and Sarah. Times have changed since Liz's run, though, and the truth is that calling Rose Tyler an assistant is kinda demeaning. After all, once Rose was left behind, she managed to build a cannon to travel between dimensions, just to find the Doctor, and some may argue it was a selfish thing to do because she was doing exactly what he'd told her not to, but if she hadn't she would've never been able to save Donna Noble. Rose was always persistent in everything, even when she had been foolish enough to run away with an idiot and then have a lack of A-levels, which had her end up working in a shop. What annoys people about her is that she just seems to never think things through, she just jumps in following her gut (which is why she became Bad Wolf, why she fought back Sarah Jane, why she came back to look for the Doctor). She genuinely loves the Doctor, and he genuinely loves her. Father's Day, season 1, the Doctor says he would love to have a life in which he could go home in a cab from a pub at 2 in the morning, like that couple did, but he can't -- it's a life he'll never have. And as the tenth doctor he also expresses some jealousy at the thought of not having that chance. And then he is given the chance (technically). His meta-crisis self, who thinks like him, who is basically him. He gets sent to the dimension where Rose Tyler is, and he offers her to grow old together. The Doctor refused to say 'I love you' because he knew that if he said it, Rose would never choose the other version of him (and HE at least couldn't keep her forever). Not to mention that he didn't go to Martha Jones, or to Sarah. He went to Rose.
@KendrixTermina10 жыл бұрын
Sarah didn't call Rose his "assistant" to demean her; It's a running gag/reference to when he worked for UNIT (Like back when he and Sarah first met) and had some actual, paid "assistants" in his job as a researcher for UNIT (This being how he met Liz Shaw, and later, Jo, though he did do reular space-cruising with the latter once he stopped being stuck), and since then, everyone at UNIT just seems to have assumed that this is somehow the designated term for anyone he brings along, much to the continued annoyance of everyone involved; Sarah would've gone by that designation as well at the time, and she had her own fair share of saving his butt back in the day, every bit as much as Rose. Can't expect Sarah to magically know all of Rose's past history, they just met at this point.
@AnaGomez19949 жыл бұрын
KendrixTermina Cryer24597 I'm sorry, actually, I should've replied to avoid the confusion. Cryer24597, you're right, I hadn't watched the old Who, and it's only now that I get to see where the term 'assistant' comes from. Thank you both for the clarification. In my comment, all I was trying to do is defend Rose from the people that keep bringing her character down, as Rose was my first companion and she's kinda my favourite. Now, I think we can all agree that this argument has become really daft, so let's just let it go.

That look on her face when she sees the Tardis. It's a look of fear. Of knowing what it represents and all that she has been through. Sladen conveys that dread so brilliantly. It overwhelms her and she has to retreat. Brilliant stuff. Then her smile when she sees him and all that fear and dread vanishes and she is with her friend again.

I think whoever wrote the second half of this scene was just trying to bring out the vivicious side of Sarah we all loved and clash that with Rose's own rebellious streak. I found it to be very natural, and at times amusing. And even then it doesn't really matter. What really matters is that Sarah has been reunited with the Doctor and has tied the old with the new in her own fantastic way.
