In 1660 the previously exiled King Charles II returns to London with an enormous fanfare. Charles II's reign is a dramatic shift away from the rule of the Puritans that precede him but the tragedy of the worst outbreak of Plague and The Great Fire Of London strike the nation's heart.
From Elizabeth II to Cleopatra, Real Royalty peels back the curtain to give a glimpse into the lives of some of the most influential families in the world, with new full length documentaries posted every week covering the monarchies of today and all throughout history.

My favorite moment in Charles II's return to England comes from Pepys's diary. Pepys came up the Thames with Charles II and landed with him in the same long boat. While the party was getting out of the boat, Charles' King Charles spaniel took a crap in the bottom of the boat, and at that point it suddenly hit Pepys that Charles II was just a normal human being. A true moment of enlightenment.

Charles was probably one of the smartest monarchs to rule Britain. He understood that to be a King in England at this time, he had to very conciliatory with Parliament. His father and brother James didn't have the political savvy he had to survive. I think his witty easygoing nature put many people at ease. His subjects were willing to over look his partying if he left them alone to practice their religion and not stir up civil wars.

This was fantastic! Thank you for posting. Two questions remain for me: 1) what of the American colonies during this time ? - the government changed I think 4 times (?) if I kept track including the army (and navy?) taking control under Cromwell. How was this news conveyed in the then-tiny colonies and how did the soldiers and sailors and governors etc over there handle things? I recognize so many names from Maryland and Virginia (Cecil, Fairfax, etc) and I assume these were the same families. 2) why does every English king in the 1600’s look like Howard Stern did in the 1990’s?

She and my dad thought about moving to Colorado springs, Sedona and around lake Cumberland in Kentucky but she always made the final decision she couldn't leave family. When she passed Ive held some regret that I wished she were able to travel more and see the world, I wish when her children, myself included were grown she would have taken the time to see the world but unfortunately she put her family in front of herself her whole life and I'll never know if on her death bed she regretted not putting herself first when possible to see the world

The problem that many of the Stuart kings had was they believed in "Divine Right". Not a good thing to believe. At least Charles II was able to do some good for Britain while he was king and he wasn't overthrown like his brother was by his daughter and son-in-law. If I am right, Charles II also liked art and helped to build up the art work that we see today.
@mpnuorva
@mpnuorva 2 жыл бұрын
Kind of. The Stuarts seems to have forgotten that the divine right is based on a Christian version of the judaic notion of a King as a messianic figure maintaining Israel's covenant with God, and as such while their kingship may be sacrosanct, their results are conditional.

Cromwell was not at all a dictator. his problem was that try as he might, he couldn't get a Parliament that was willing to do much of anything but line their purses. This is still true today, but overall the modern Parliament is much more comfortable with the idea of doing things. But Parliament did offer Cromwell the powers of the crown twice, but Cromwell refused the earthly kingdom and powers that the crown entailed. Wags of the day noted that the Devil only made that same offer to Christ once, not twice as Parliament did to Cromwell. The real heritage of Cromwell was New England that influence eventually resulted in the formation of the United States, along with Washington as a general who refused the crown as Cromwell did. In New England today, it is common to find streets named not only after Cromwell, but also after the Regicides and Cromwell's most famous battles.
