I'm conflicted on the Olympics idea On one hand I'd love to see Pankration as an Olympic sport as it could work in the same way for MMA that amateur boxing works for boxing On the other hand, the modern Olympics really hates on martial arts, having your art go into the Olympics would be a death sentence as they insure the rules water it down to the point of being useless. I'd support a lot of protective equipment like padding, but I won't support changing the rules greatly. If we see it as amateur MMA then I suppose one can remove all ground strikes (MMA doesn't even have an agreement on what strikes should be permitted and what shouldn't) but all submissions must be permitted and all strikes must be permitted on the feet barring the obviously too dangerous such as eyes, groin, spine, etc. The feet could basically just be MMA rules. Although I'd actually be upset to see headbutts be removed. And the fights must take place without the Gi for sure Tbh ultimately I think Pankration shouldn't be an Olympic sport as it will most likely just be an insult to it's memory. I'd rather see Pankration live on through MMA, which requires people to be educated enough to give it the credit it deserves

The classic greek culture is the cradle of our european civilisation. Aspiring to be a true philosopher, for me life is about gaining wisdom and truly living by it. Sokrates was (for me) the best example for this lifestyle; he even died in order to not bow before opression and he refused to take the easy way out. He asked questions which didnt stop at political correctness. He was about truth. All the best to you! Xaire

As Armenian I am glad twice because first I vas interested in Pancration after my more than 10 years of seeking. And now I have founded the roots of martial arts and I feel the same feelings - the passion to restore this wonderful martial art. And I have been exploring it for several time. After that I was always interested in Greece culture, I was risen on Ancient Greece legends and I studied it with great passion. I also love Greece philosophy : Aristotle, Socrates, Plato etc. And second is a political aspect which I have recently discovered for myself too. Things happened such way that in addition to all this I am Armenian also😀

Dude I seriously doubt that they prohibited ground and pound, maybe that was only for the boys/young divisions A short look at the Wikipedia page states that the only things barred where eye gouging and biting, and even then Sparta allowed those rules. So in that sense it was basically the early UFC but even more brutal as death was an acceptable way to win Otherwise great video, I've subscribed

First of all thanks a lot for your efforts and videos! As a historian and former competitive martial artist I highly value them! One question: You convincingly argue that there was no ground-and-pound in pankration. How would you assess the situation depicted in the statue on the left hand side of this videos title picture (Florentine wrestlers is the name of it I guess). Many people deduct from this depiction that it was one of the main strategies of pankration to force your opponent to the ground, apply a hold and deliver blows with your free arm (basically ground-and-pound). As a martial artist the whole situation of that statue seems to be a very difficult position to achieve and sustain. Thanks a lot! I subscribed:)

I do remember that, in SF6's story mode, the player character can talk to Marisa, and she'll mention that Pankration used to be done while completely naked. Since you mentioned that there are differences between the Greek and Roman versions of the sport, maybe this was this true for the Roman version of Pankration? Or did the writers / research team drop the ball on that one?

Damn bro you kind of appealed to the proud Greek in me 😂🤣😂🤣 Are there any gyms in Greece you would recommend? I ve trained a little kyokushin here and there, but there's no gym in Paros , where I live and I m starting out on bjj instead. Still not even a stripe to my white belt, haha but I m always up for switching it up next winter when I can leave my island after the summer season ends. Original plan was to roll up to an MMA gym, not planning on doing any serious competing as I m 28 already and I feel like it d be hard to catch up, but over the years, with everything I ve tried, combat sports training is the only thing that fills me with joy

Honestly I'm not sure what gave him this idea. I think maybe this rule was only for the young boys as Pankration didn't have weight classes but it did have age classes The rules of Pankration were only no eye gouging and no biting. But in Sparta they competed even without these rules, because of course they did its Sparta 😂
@AMOPankration

@tatum ergo The rule mentioned in the video (ορθοπαιία - or-tho-pa-ee-a) was a rule known to exist in ancient Greece. I will be making a video which references the ancient Hellenic rule set. Stay tuned.

I cannot help to think that whatever the technique used, any dude from 2000years ago could easily kick the ass of champs of today. These guys had level of testosterone that would put the toughest modern guy to shame and anyway, these guys were killing each other with sharp brass blades. It take some nuts brain to live in this period

You have done 0 research and going off of feelings. Modern champions and other athletes have the best training and equipment and diet alongside sometimes steroids. The mma champions of today would destroy them 2k years ago. Rose tinted glasses on history. We are taller and stronger especially the athletes. Name me one greek guy that could deadlift 1000 pounds.
@menalgharbwalsharq648
@menalgharbwalsharq648 5 ай бұрын
@LunaticKing-fj3hp who knows, they were not lifting weights like we do. But we have stories of dudes lifting rocks as a proof of strenght, that if compared to actual rocks we can find following the descriptions, are impossible to lift for everyone but the greatest strong men of today, and "being strong" was not a job back in the day. Nobody would pay you to train all year. Now let's talk about the random people. We are fed with ultra transformed food full of sugar and fat, our veggies are grown with tons of chemicals. We may be taller generally speaking because we don't suffer food shortage anymore, but our lifestyle is extremely confortable and most people today does not develop a strong body like only our grand-grand dads did back in the beginning of the last century. Not even accounting for the complete lack of natural selection in the modern world due to curing od diseases, abundance, relative peacefull times (and anyway modern warfare does not select any kind of strong traits to survive) There is evidence to be found in history but that would indeed require extensive research and gathering that neither you nor I can do, but you wear as much rose glasses on modern times than I do on antiquity 👌🫵❣️

That's interesting that ground and pound wasn't allowed in classical Pankration. I wonder if that was due to it simply causing more unintentional deaths because of the lack of hand protection and springy floors than even the warrior Greeks were comfortable with.
