I seriously doubt that, if Spartans existed today, they would object to the use of firearms. Either that, or they can embrace defeat. Also, while you make a good case for not equating them to the "alt right", I find it impossible to believe they would consider themselves leftists.

Okay, I do have questions. You mention that there is no evidence for headbutts in pottery and that it therefore probably wasn't legal. Then you mention that there is a written source regarding a method of signaling submission not present in pottery. A line of which mentions headbutting. So was headbutting allowed or not? Earlier you also described that Pankration did have rules, such as no wrestling or grappling. Yet this same text mentions both. Wouldn't this suggest that the tournament in question was only involving a certain aspect of pankration, a focus on just the strikes, and may not be indicative of the sport entirely? You mention groin strikes were probably prohibited because depictions often show both a fist and a foot movement, but if they can be interpreted as a punch and a lunge, because a punch and a kick would be ineffective, why not also a kick and a guard? I'm genuinely curious because your analysis doesn't seem to make a lot of sense to me.

I am not sure whether the questions you ask are genuine, given you seem to have grossly misheard what I say in the video, but I will answer them nonetheless. 1. Headbutts could be drawn, but weren't. Tapping could not be drawn due to limitation in vase painting technique. 2. The line of Lucian mentioning a headbutt is clearly (and explicitly) describing a clinch in wrestling. There are no mentions of headbutts in pankration anywhere in ancient Greek text. 3. I did not say that the ruleset of Pisidia was exclusive. It was a regional ruleset. Obviously pankration would most often include wrestling and groundwork, the latter was exclusive to it. 4. The question about the vase depiction is self explanatory.

@@AMOPankrationI am just curious. I find the philosophy, techniques, and philosophy interesting. Your video is just one of the first results for ancient pankration. I get the limitations of the art. That is fair. I’m just confused since the words “butted heads together like a ram” seems rather specific, given a clinch is basically a grapple rather than a full force head strike like the imagery invokes. And I actually would appreciate an explanation about the interpretation of the artwork. I don’t have any martial arts experience so it’s not self evident. Even if you can point me to a more in depth video that would be great :)

In that section Lucian is describing wrestlers, he moves on to describe pankratiasts on the next page. They strike heads because they go in and out of clinch while trying to break eachother's lock. You can read Lucian's Anacharsis to verify what I'm saying.

@@AMOPankrationIt’s an interesting read, although there isn’t much information on the fighting itself. I saw your other videos in techniques, but those were more focused on the striking aspect. Open palm strikes, elbows, kicks, etc. Where would I find information about the wrestling side of it, or was that just less common than people suggest?

Dan Severn had the best mustache of all of UFC's history, that is a scientific fact ! 😉 I don't watch UFC much, and never was a huge fan except for very early UFC (I still disliked all the mythos around the GRACIES). The rules quickly made UFC boring... exceptionnal fighters such a George Saint-Pierre could be boring because of the rules. I also dislike the personality of quite a few of the most exciting fighters of UFC, such as Chuck Lidell or Conor Mc Gregor. I still watched a lot of Anderson Silva fights. I really liked the pre glove era Pancrase (Bas Rutten, Masakatsu Funaki, Yuki Kondo), and also liked some of the matches of Pride FC (Wanderlei Silva, Igor Vovchanchyn, Mirco Crocop).

@@WishIWasClever loads of roids and 2 mn gas tank... I supose you are talking about Mark Kerr in particular... non the less I really liked that era. OK Pride rules where ever changing and often unclear to the fighters themselves. My prefered rule set was definitively early Pancrase. It is clear that early modern MMA had often poor technique, particulary early UFC when most fighters where trying to prove that their style is the best (first rounded UFC fighters where maybe Ken Shamrock and Marco Ruas, but it was quite an exception). But early Pancrase had pretty good technique (superbe striking by Bas Rutten and Maurice Snith, great counter grapling by Takahashi such as in his fight against Minoru Suzuki). Some of the techniques can be considered oldish (for example poor guard retention is omnipresent), but at the same time some of the technique have been overlooked and forgotten. I remember some modern UFC comentator saying how original an escape was... and I was thinking, man I've allready seen that done by Frank Shamrock more than two decades ago. PS : My favourite fighter of all time is Joe Son... I'm joking! Last time I checked I could not find on youtube the Joe Son fight where he is in a g-string and has make up, and taps out so quickly... early MMA could also be really bad !
