March 20th, 2019 -- For my 37th outing of this year, I decided to go back to my pre-chummed spot on the Schuylkill River for some more Carp fishing! That's right, folks -- per the title of this video, the QUEST FOR THE 40LBER CARP IS BACK!!!
The quest for a 40lbs+ Carp in Philadelphia is arduous, folks. Many of my respected Carp anglers have been attempting it for years, without much success! Only a few selected (and lucky) anglers have broken such barrier around these parts. Thus, I am taking this gig even more seriously this year!
I don't know how long it will take. Heck...I don't even know if I will accomplish it in the end. But hey...feel free to join me on this quest! Let's have some fun, eh? Hah.

I think the way you handle carp is inarguably safe and more than enough, I wouldnt worry about putting those disclaimers about landing mats etc. Netting them and dipping them in water occasionally is more than enough for the species.

@@extremephillyfishing No matter how you fish or who you are, someone's going to be mad at the way you do it. It's universal. Im a jersey guy and the carp here are excellent, and will try carp fishing in the rivers here this summer whenever smb are not biting well. When I wade or float, I see some absolute giants and I already know the holes they like. Some of your tutorial videos has helped a lot. Thanks

That's all I mostly do is carp fish. I started fishing the carp tournaments in NY where they require a mat. I was always against it but now I actually love a landing mat. Easier to handle fish take pictures with them and what not... Great video tho Leo
@jamesaritchie1
@jamesaritchie1 5 жыл бұрын
Carp are fun to catch, but the best way to handle them is by killing them and throwing the body in the dumpster. People here are getting silly because carp are a game fish in Europe. They don't seem to know that this is true only because carp have ruined so many species of native game fish in the countries that there isn't much else to catch. Asian carp are the biggest threat, but every type of carp is destructive to many species of native fish. In my state, the law says you must kill every carp you catch, or face a stiff fine. Common carp are tolerated, but game officials would like to get rid of these, too, it just isn't possible. Since being brought into the country, they've spread to nearly every river, stream, lake, and pond we have. If the same thing happens with Asian carp, the fishing industry in the US will die completely.

about 10 years ago I was fishing with a friend and my son on the Schuylkill a little north of the city back before they took down the dams. They were fishing for smallmouth and they caught about 60, I was fishing the middle of the river for carp and hooded into a monster carp, we could see him, he looked to be about 5 feet long, he proceeded tow our boat upriver about 200 yards before my 20 pound line broke.

@@extremephillyfishing I know it sounds hard to believe. The bite was insane though I was covering about 100+ feet of water every cast with a slow steady retrieve. Most bites we're within 15 seconds some even as fast as 3 seconds. I Was not jigging I was fishing a constant depth with a weighted float. All I needed to do was reel to hook them an it was easy to unhook them. I don't know why their were so many crappie in one spot.

I don't think you've seen many carp caught on KZbin. I don't know anyone in Europe who uses anything but a regular net. A mat is for after you land the carp, and it's tough to use in a location like this. It's made for bank fishing, not when on a place like this video was shot. Carp are a lot of fun to catch, and some species are good to eat, but they are an invasive, and highly destructive fish. One big reason they're considered a game fish in other countries is because they've killed off many species of fish native to those countries. My opinion is that Europeans do not fish for carp correctly. They go to silly lengths, and use ridiculously expensive gear to do the same thing we do here for a tiny fraction of the cost. It's the nature of fishing. When you say a fish is a game fish, all the gear connected to that fish gets fancier and far more expensive. It's the same way with largemouth bass fishing in the US. I've seen three hundred dollar bass lures that were no better than ten dollar lures for other fish. And a two hundred and twenty dollar landing net made the same way and out of the same material as a thirty dollar landing net. The difference? The expensive one said "Largemouth Bass" on the handle.

@@jamesaritchie1 good point, but carp aren't that bad for river, ponds and lakes. They clean allot like plecos but plecos dont have any predotars but carp do an by expensive gear for fishing i know what you mean i myself use a hole setup of 300 dollars for carp and in that spot its easy to use nets and nets if you are good at carp fishing you wont have any carp i have fished for carp about 5 years and its great they fight hard and they look beutiful but here in europe carp are like bass fishing everyone focusses on those game fish so i now what you mean when i think of bass i dont care if people dont take care good of them but thats what americans think by carp the only carp fisherman on yt is catfish and carp he is probably the only yt carp fisherman that fishes correctly for carp. My english is badddd so sorry if you cant read it.

broady walker whattt no way My P.b. carp using only corn(anyone can do it) is 17lb8oz. What state are you from, in philly the state record is a massive 50+lber from the Schukyll river so I must say 16 lb is really small

Sean Tran Maine, and yeah its only 16lb. I catch pike up to 40in from the bank near my house though and i'll take a pike crushing a topwater spook over waiting for a carp to come get a piece of corn lol.

If you're fishing that kind of bank structure, instead of buying a new fishing net. Get a crab net instead if you don't already have one.

Just get a landing mat next time, they don't cost much and you can get them for 10 dollars or even built your own ones. Carp are more fragile than most fish because of their compact bodies and potential high weight also some are not protected by scales as much, such as mirrors, so you can damage their senstive leather skin quite easily. Thirdly they are very strong and tend to flap around on the bank. Just get a mat dude. To put them on the plain concrete is about the worst you can treat them, show some more respect for these amazing fish when you intend to release them afterwards! :/

I have to admire your goal. A forty pound carp is tough to find on this side of the pond. I love catching carp, and I love eating some species, but I'd be a lot happier if we could get rid of them all. Asian carp are the biggest danger, but all carp are destructive, and when they move in, other fishing gets far worse. If you look at historic fishing records, the same thing happened withj common carp, but few realize this because common carp have been here for so long that everyone now alive, and their fathers and grandfathers, grew up with them. But where carp move in, most other fishing declines. from native, pre-carp levels. The law requires us to kill any carp we catch in my state, and I think this law will spread. I hope it does. As fun as carp are to catch, they aren't as much fun as many native species they harm, and most of them aren't even good to eat unless you go through a two or three day bath cycle in clean, fresh water before killing them.

Thanks for not using a landing mat! Its literally a myth that carp can be damaged by pure gravity. If you have them in the grass over concrete, its much better than a landing mat anyway. I don’t like the euro carp market because of all the absolutely unnessecary crap...

When i first started carp fishing i thought it wasnt necessary. But i was wrong. If a large carp starts flopping around it can really damage itself. I had 2 upper 20 lb carp thrash around so hard that they had blood coming out there gills. Now i either use a mat or dont take them out the water.

pa woodsman bleeding gills don’t matter much as long as you can get them in the waterso the blood cauterizes

@@mynameisnotcory I think the landing matt is mostly for them to take the pictures over in case the fish rolls out of their arms. Ive never used any matts but the ones that fold around the fish so you can set them in the water and let them chill before taking pictures seem like a nice concept.

The reason I don't use a landing mat with Carp is because I don't use it with any other species out there. Thus, I am not going to give the Carp a sense of privilege. That being said...I will, however, still take good care of them -- to the best of my extent. That includes preventing them from flopping around and hurting themselves, avoiding fall/crash injuries, soaking them back in the water in-between handling/data collection; weight them in the net; avoid contact with gills; not lip them or hold them in a full vertical position; etc. I have NEVER had a Common Carp die on me, or even one just float after release. Given the right treatment [and without a landing mat], they will swim away just fine! The fact is: the wild Carp of the USA are not so sensitive that the lack of a landing mat will injure them for life. Losing a bit of slime will not make them prone to illnesses in the River. Come on -- they survived the polluted era of the Delaware and Schuylkill Rivers. Lol. I don't need a pod, 12 feet rods, alarm accessories, or a tent by the River to catch my Carp either.
