@RLplusabunchofdumbnumbersАй бұрын
One, Homeric Greece is a fictional period - it's not actually history. Two, that's so much the case that we're not even sure if Homer's Ithaca is the same as modern Ithaca (it's likely, but not certain). Three, Ithaca has been inhabited since at least the neolithic period - i.e., **before** the migrations of the Indo-European peoples than would become the Mycenaeans. So, you're looking at the fictional/mythological world of heroic epic that somewhat represents a pre-Bronze Age collapse Mycenaean world - a world where we know that the actual historical counterpart had extensive trading and diplomatic contacts with the Phoenicians, Egyptians, the Levant - and you're complaining that the actors playing these fictional characters don't match your pre-conceptions of what these fictional characters looked like? No problem with a British Odysseus? No problem with a Welsh Pisander? Juliette Binoche has Brazilian ancestry - are we still okay with her? What precisely are the criteria by which you're deciding who is and is not acceptable to play a mythological Achaean?

You know there are non-Greek characters in the Trojan Cycle, I mean characters non-Greek origin are often present. One of those included here is Philetius, who was a slave loyal to Oddyseus, so idk if its too much of a stretch

@@GuineaPigEveryday "You know there are non-Greek characters in the Trojan Cycle" . . . I wonder if its partly because most aspiring actors in Western countries these days are ethnic minorities. Certainly in the UK or US, so whoever does the casting feels pressured.
@jesineri121315 күн бұрын
@@vindolanda6974 "Whoever does the casting feels pressured" . . . correct. Because now they systemically and legally had to fill in DEI quotas. That's the only reason, so I hate it when commenters had to use stupid justifications for such racist and nonsensical castings!

I love movies like this. The Odyssee is a classic. I loved Bekim Fehmiu in Dino De Laurentiis' Odysseus. De Laurentiis cast Bekim as Odysseus in the acclaimed mini-series in 1968. I hope the new version does justice to its legacy.
@akasgsvirgil9503Ай бұрын
I am quite surprised no one has produced a film or franchise that deals with Odysseus's 20 years journey home. I suppose the optimal time for that film would've been after Troy was released back in 2004. This films looks good. And Voldemort got ripped!
@LFire12Ай бұрын
I think probably because these days they'd have to substantially edit or remove aspects of the story, as basically Odysseus cheats on Penelope multiple times on his way home, which to a modern audience would reduce his appeal a LOT.
