@@MajorSamm Respectfully, the guerillas were not confined to the camps, the dregs of the townships were sent to the camps to enjoy the freebies, the actual guerillas melted into the population, the bush and into border areas with their extensive small arms weaponry. The Zipra were still considering a conventional invasion from neighbouring Zambia almost til the end. The Rhodesians had every right to plan in case the worst happened just as Zipra and Zanla were planning their own extremely murderous Plan B's in case things went awry for them... but it wasnt realistically on the cards during the election. That came later. The idea that Lord Soames had in any way delivered the country and the guerillas into the Rhodesian army hands was just non-existent in reality. Incidentally Lord Soames was very much a stuffed shirt and he and his little entourage were considered a joke by the Rhodies that dealt with him. But the lethal powers he represented - the US, and to a lesser extent the UK, were not to be sneered at and the Rhodesians knew the game was up for them regardless.

A brilliant short-documentary, much better than what the BBC could potentially have ever produced! I really like the fact that you focus on the facts and tell them in an objective way, without circling around the unnecessary theme of majority rule. It really would have been interesting if the Coup had happened, as the SADF would probably have supported the it with own troops or at least Air Force Units.
@woodland53252 жыл бұрын
it would surely have been a bloodbath, there was no better path forward had the coup happened it would have gone down like congo for sure
@Harry_842 жыл бұрын
Perhaps, but the SADF had become much less active in Rhodesia since 1977 in order to try, with little success to appease the west. Once majority rule happened Zimbabwe was lost and the only thing they could get from Zimbabwe was bush war veterans. Doubt the SADF would have become involved. I always think it’s a shame that they never did assassinate Mugabe, there were many attempts but Ken Flower was undercover working with the British and Mugabe was warned (by the Brits) multiple times, at the last minute. Sad.

Here are my recollections. I was based at 3Bde in Umtali. The day before the election results a group of us senior NCOs were addressed by our Squadron commander. He read out the Operation Quartz signal applicable to Op Thrasher. He described it as a contingency against a break down in law and order and that Op Quartz was to protect and evacuate the White population. A similar plan existed within the SADF to accommodate an influx of refugees from Zimbabwe. At the end of the briefing our commander said this was also how a coup would have been planned. As a career soldier I was very excited and hoped Op Quartz would be enacted. In the end all went off very smoothly, and I believe without incident. in the Op Thrasher area. We were shell-shocked for a day or two but very quickly got into the mindset of integrating the Armies and that introduced another series of interesting adventures.

Great video! There were some interesting conflicts going on during the election as well between the British SAS and the Rhodesian SAS. A cudgel fight between the two groups, where the Brits eventually backed down, I believe I read that in "A Handful of Hard Men" by Hannes Wessels. As well as a host of tomfoolery with the politicians, and especially the Rhodesian Intelligence community. And also, the intimidation and violence by ZANU PF, with voters days and hours before the election, has been well documented by multiple media sources. Great video!
@markaxworthy2508 Жыл бұрын
The tanks were not brought in for these operations. They arrived several months before the Lancaster House Agreement at a time when nobody knew the final terms. They were acquired because ZIPRA had begun to acquire armoured vehicles, ZANLA was thought likely to follow, FRELIMO already had them and their Cuban allies were already using them in Angola. Rhodesia's counter insurgency army had little anti-tank capacity. In 1979 my unit had a single anti-tank grenade acquired unofficially. We had never practice fired because it was the only one. As far as I could see, when there were no army units at Sub-JOC Mtoko, this was often the only anti-tank weapon between Nyamapanda on the border and Salisbury, the capital.

Quartz might just be unique in the extensive annuls of military operations given that the dearth of associated documentation has reduced its true purpose and ultimate cancellation to mere speculation! That said, and as someone who’s read a good deal on the Rhodesian Bush War over the years (though that certainly doesn’t make me an expert) I suspect the likelier purpose of these clandestine operations was to liquidate ZANU’s leadership (and as many ZANLA combatants as possible) should Mugabe _lose_ the 1980 election, rather than victory. Indeed, had the Rhodesians planned to strike in the aftermath of the latter they would’ve surely known the repercussions would’ve been immense: universal condemnation from the international community, more stringent sanctions followed by a countrywide descent into outright anarchy. No, had ZANU lost they would’ve undoubtedly refused to concede defeat making the resumption of hostilities inevitable. It made sense therefore to plan accordingly to ensure that that most undesirable contingency was mitigated… As for that footage of the oafish Lord Soames cryptically asserting his desire to have intervened in certain instances during his brief tenure as governor but being unable to do so: he’s almost certainly alluding to the _industrial scale_ voting fraud that ultimately swept Mugabe to power and to which Commonwealth election monitors, under orders, turned a blind eye to…. ;)

In the end it never happened. We stood down. I went to university in South Africa. As you say - a What if? I'd love if you could do a documentary style video in this style on them. Or... you know, a really cool video, but I'd very much doubt that it would be possible due to the nature of the job. It’s not that complicated, the media lie and make it more complex than it needs to be, the bantus like mugabe who took over aren’t even from Zimbabwe, even though they claim they are, and once they got in they massacred the native people of Zimbabwe the matabeles, aka the Matabele massacre. There was no apartheid in rhodisia

If only this op had taken place as a big fuck you to Jimmy Carter, Cyril Vance, Henry Kissinger, Peter Carrington and Christopher Soames. Oh and Mugabe as well. The main spook who was leaking intel was the head of the CIO Ken Flower. It would've been a bonus had Flower and Soames also been taken out.

Very good video and reasonably accurate. FWIW I was one of the original members of "E" Sqn RhAC and 9 of my photos appear in the video including the 2 I took of our Sqn at 0900 and 0915 Mar. 04, 1980 as we listened to the election results broadcast over ZRBC radio after spending all night on the tanks waiting for the code word to be broadcast to commence Op Quartz. Our group of 4 tanks had been assigned to Maj Bob Bob Mackenzie who commanded C Sqn RhSAS. We were to attack the AV building housing ZANLA's military leadership. We spent many hours practicing with Mackenzie and the C Sqn troops who were to assault the building under the covering fire of our 100mm main guns and 12.7A/A DshkT mg's. The C Sqn assaulters had been equipped with the latest in body armor made by an American company...and I had an identical model which I brought to Rhodesia when I joined the Army in Jan 1979. While practicing with C Sqn I was wearing my vest while manning the 12.7 on the T54/55...Mackenzie asked if I would mind loaning the vest to his squadron during the assault on the target because I would be loading the main gun and behind the 100mm of tank armor while the battle raged. I politely replied, "no Sir, when I'm not loading the main gun I have every intention of firing the 12.7mm at the target!" Mackenzie could have ordered me to give it up and as a lowly Trooper I would have to obey his command but he seemed happy with my response and let the matter go. One minor point...we received the 8 T54/55's in June 1979, not October as reported in the video and the first CO of the squadron was American Maj Darryl Winkler (RIP) who was later transferred to RAR and replaced by Capt Kaufeld (RIP)...both good men. Cheers!

Thanks a lot, that's exactly the reason I decided to do this one first since very few people even know it happened
