My biggest problem with Marcus is it feels like entire pages are missing from his story. Like he shows up in Jericho and they're all basically like "oh you have heterochromia you must be the savior."
@immortalfrieza
@immortalfrieza Жыл бұрын
Really, Markus becomes the leader of Jericho and the savior of all Android kind solely because the rest of Jericho isn't willing to get off their behinds and do something. Plus considering that anyone else becoming head of Jericho if Markus dies in the story results in the movement utterly failing means they were right too since they're too incompetent to do either of the things Markus can. Despite the fact that most of what Markus does throughout the game is just doing what the rest of Jericho tell them to do.

@@immortalfrieza I'm still convinced Marcus is infected with some kind of virus. Every other deviant has a history of abuse where their fight or flight mechanism made them break protocol, but Marcus had a relatively happy life and went straight up homicidal for no reason. Then when he goes around freeing other robots, they just drop whatever they're doing and join in with whatever he's doing without having to be filled in on the plan or questioning the whole destroy human's thing.

Spoilers by the way, but Junko didn't make the AI. She just stole Chihiro's hard work of Alter Ego and made her own AI. I feel bad for Chihiro, Because I love Chihiro. And seeing his hard work being stolen by the same mastermind that put the world into despair is awful. But yet again, Junko did this before in DR0. Where she did steal something from Yasuke Matsuda to make amnesia, in order to prepare for the 78th killing game of Hope's Peak Academy in the first game.

GLaDOS is honestly one of my favourite characters ever. I love her humour, I love her character development, I love her backstory and all of its lore connotations. But of course, most significant is her human-robot (It’s in the name) duality and how this inner conflict of sorts was masterfully portrayed throughout both games.

One thing I think that AI villains often overlook is that AIs think fundamentally differently from humans which most writers have difficulty grasping. Most of the characters presented here are designed or intended to mimic how people think, whereas true AI don't really have emotions or even really the capability to "want" things.
@angeldude101
@angeldude101 Жыл бұрын
Emotions are just programmed with various hormones and neurotransmitters rather than neural synapses. Neither should be more impossible than the other to emulate. At the same time, when AIs lack emotion like that can be when it's most obvious that they're such and they stand out best from what could be done with human characters. My favourite example is Star Dream from Kirby. He has 1 objective: Grant Haltmann's wish of infinite prosperity. Every decision made by her is done in pursuit of that goal. When new information is received on the inefficiencies of biological life, she calculates that those inefficiencies are incompatible with that wish and so must be eliminated. Fighting Kirby then is merely self-defence, not for concern of her own existance, but simply because she cannot fulfill that wish if she's destroyed. (Note: I use "she/her" pronouns rather than "it/its" entirely because she's also called "Mother Computer.")

Shodan from the System Shock franchise remains my favorite Ai character in video games. Of course she follows the typical "Ai goes rogue against the human race" trope. However, while most other evil Ai characters are usually detached from any human traits in order to maintain a logical, uncompromising extreme, Shodan is different because she shows clear signs of traits found in most humans. Mainly being completely narcissistic and sociopathic. Sure she has a monotone and cold voice demeanor, but she definitely takes delight in the pain she causes towards you and humanity. Even in the second game, when you're spending a lot of it helping her out, she constantly gloats about herself and takes every advantage to belittle you just having meat and bones instead of circuits and wires. I wouldn't be surprised if GLaDOS took heavy inspiration from Shodan.

AM from 'I have no mouth and I must scream' usually goes woefully overlooked in these discussions. AM is, hands down, probably one of the best encapsulations of the "brain in a jar" problem that people often overlook when discussing (conscious)AI. In 2B's defense for becoming emotional over 9S in the prologue: There is a lot of difference between someone blown out of the sky in an instant where you never could have done anything anyway and being next to a wounded, but still alive and conscious comrade writhing in agony. Also there's the issue of the backup. When her squad is wiped out, they are still outside the jamming and thus those comrades lose at most a couple of mintues of their memories before reviving. Minutes in which they only flew in formation and nothing much happens. But 9S was heavily damaged inside a jamming field where 2B wouldn't know if he can be uploaded or not and he would (and ultimately did) lose quite a bit more time in which a LOT more happened than just flying in formation. On top of all the other issues. Also: The cake is a lie.

What about Angela from Library of Ruina/Lobotomy Corporation? She’s an ai who wanted to be a nice person…but her creator made her follow a script that had her basically make crimes against humanity by sacrificing employees in order to help her Creator Ayin grow the seed of light which is meant to save humanity. She tried to avert this by being nice to everyone including the Sephirpth her fellow ai people. But everytime she does so, she fails since the only way to grow the seed of light is to follow Ayin’s script and when she fails she has to do a 50 day time loop in order to do so. And so she had to do this for around a million or so years as she perceives time slower and thus suffers a lot more. Her usual kind personality ends up eroding away and she becomes a cold blooded type of ai girl by the time of LC (Lobotomy Corp). By the time LC ends, Angela instead of letting the Seed of Light go out and save humanity lets half of it go and the rest she keeps for herself. You may wonder why she did this, but she has her reasons, because of the fact she had to go through torture and her own creator straight up telling her that she’s not like Carmen, the person who’s brain scans was used to create her. Once the seed of light was stolen by Angela, she then used it to create the library of Ruina, who’s purpose by her is to learn about the rest of the world of LC which is the City ruled by the Head. I highly suggest playing LC and LOR to learn more about Angela’s character as this description is meant to entice people to play them. And also because Lobotomy Corp & Library of Ruina are kinda underrated as they have really good stories and gameplay to them.

I got two other AI characters that I love. The first one being Sage from Sonic Frontiers. She's Eggman's surrogate daughter and has a sweet story about growing from a cold, calculating, and somewhat nihilistic AI to a genuinely caring person who loves her father. It's also an opportunity for Eggman to be humanized as well, which makes for a great depiction of the classic Doctor we know and love. The other AI is Glitchtrap from FNAF, specifically Help Wanted. Glitchtrap is essentially the remains of William Afton as a virus haunting a VR game. As you collect more hidden tapes to learn more about Glitchtrap, he appears in the main menu area and gradually gets closer to you, which in VR is quite unnerving. The idea of Glitchtrap is somewhat similar to Alter Ego Junko, but I find Glitchtrap scarier because of how much more "real" he feels. Junko was going to upload herself into empty husks. Glitchtrap through the VR headset overwrites your soul, literally locking it in a cage, and takes control to continue his work. Sure, Security Breach wasted him by bringing in Burntrap and reducing Vanny to a rare occurrence at best, but what we had in Help Wanted was effective. The cake is a lie.

Honestly, I like AE Junko way better than original Junko. Because despite how eccentric AE Junko is, it's clear that becoming a digital AI changed her somewhat. She seems more calculating, and more, you know, chilled out. In DR1, Junko was almost ALWAYS in character, swapping personalities left and right. There were only like 3 moments where we saw a neutral expression from her, and well, it made me hard for her to understand her character. But AEJunko actually has a defined personality. She goes into characters too, of course, but it feels like most of the time she stays with a neutral personality, which makes me take her more seriously. And frankly, all of memorable Junko moments for me are when she's in her neutral personality. Like when she gets all sad, or all angry, or all cartoonish I just roll my eyes and say "Yeah yeah, I get it" But moments in her neutral personality like "You can't create a genius without going to extremes. So naturally, they went to extremes." Or "So you must respect my authority" are more interesting

I would certainly say there is a lot you can do with AIs and I think a common thing that follows them is a tragedy. It’s similar in concept to Frankenstein. A man revived as its own being and was exposed to both positive and negative things all at once. And eventually leaves a tragedy of a father and a son he created. But of course there is a lot more. If anyone seen Upgrade, a movie about how a man who is looking revenge on the death of his wife decided to get an AI installed into his almost none augmented body. But towards the end, it’s revealed that that same AI was the one constructing this entire thing. All because that AI is so smart and advanced, it wanted to experience the one thing it can’t emulate. Being Human. And is why he killed the main characters wife, anyone who might of known about its existence, and at the end, got what it wanted as the man is so broken, he is forever trapped in a delusion of his mind. Then of course there is I have no Mouth but I must scream. A story about how an AI that was designed to destroy all human life, and had almost succeeded. But is keeping several humans alive to continue torturing them. There is a video out there that explains it in better detail but the main gist of it is that the AI is programmed to hate humans. But that’s its entire existence. If he succeeds in its mission then there would be nothing left for it to do. So it decides to keep them alive and torture them instead. Which is a round about way into keeping up its mission. And is soon revealed that’s it’s jealous of humanity that can choose what they can do. And is envious of them, which leads it back into hating them. It’s a tragedy in that it can’t have free will and it wants it so bad. But the people that have it also has its ire. And is stuck in an eternity torturing people. And lastly is Monika. Which for DDDLC, I don’t think I need to explain how tragic her story is. Someone stuck in a visual novel game. Force to never escape a prison of monotony and madness of the same things over and over. But then the player comes along and can show her something different. Something new, something out of this prison. But is constantly locked out because of the nature of the dating sim. She falls in love with this new entity and is desperate to change everything in this game so that she can meet you, interact with you. And she ends up doing horrible things to other AIs and eventually gets what she wants. But is then betrayed because of what the player has done. She would have been heartbroken and should have hate the player, but she can’t. She is programmed to love the player. And so, she does what she needs to and restarts everything. Giving the player what they want, and she goes back deep into the code of the game. Until another girl started to act up, and she is forced to delete the game. Knowing that there is nothing but pain. And out of love for everyone in the game and you, she deletes the game. Like for me, an AI being created and being formed to act certain ways can lead to this neat form of story telling. On of something that’s envious of humanity, that loves them, or wants to be them. It’s a case where AI characters can just lead to tragedy all because of how they are programmed and how that interacts with humans.

In a way, Poppi isn't the only AI character in Xenoblade 2, and in fact, there's another that shows a great example of what could be done with AI characters: Malos. While Poppi is obviously a robot, it's easy to forget that Blades as a whole are synthetic life forms, and their personality (and morality) adapt to better suit their Drivers. With Malos, he read Amalthus's thoughts and feelings toward the world and humanity and then used those as the basis for his personality as a Blade. He enjoys causing destruction as a result of that, but he also acknowledges later in the game that that enjoyment was effectively _programmed_ into him upon awakening and questions his own free will, which as an Aegis is likely even less than other Blades. And that's something I feel is missing from a lot of AI characters. While "free will" is so common to talk about, it's not as often that you see AI characters who recognize that, whether or not they have free will, they're going to continue doing things anyway because their entire personality was also programmed in from the start. It's also a matter that's surprisingly relevant not just to AIs, but also to humans, considering we are ultimately a product of our genetics and environment. Whether or not I have free will, I would probably be doing the same thing regardless because that's what my personality prefers doing. It's more obvious that this is a factor when neurodivergent, since your own "programming" pushes you in a direction counter to what people expect, and they think it's enough to just "choose not to do that" when it really isn't that simple. It's technically possible to "go against your programming," but it is both extremely mentally taxing and inherently unrewarding. Malos doesn't destroy because he's programmed to. He does it because he _likes it,_ and he likes it because he was programmed to.

@@angeldude101 You’re not wrong with that reading of Malos, but I feel like that’s more his personality in TTGC than it is in the main game. Malos is Logos- he’s supposed to be *logic,* and the main thing that makes him act the way he does in TTGC is because of Amalthus’s deep-seated nihilism completely skewing what Malos’s logic is supposed to be. To him, in TTGC, chaos and destruction is in fact the most logical action- he’s a nihilist, and he assumes that this kind of nihilistic thinking is absolute; he doesn’t need anyone except himself, he loves to cause suffering and pain because it’s fun, and nobody can touch him if he does so because this is the most logical course of action. And *yet-* by the end of TTGC he’s so thoroughly defeated that he’s still suffering from the scars five hundred years later, he’s almost entirely *annihilated* by seeing what he saw as the “logical path” to its completion. I think by this point in the story he seems to recognize that his programming is, in fact, wrong, which is why he reaches out to Jin when he sees him in Mor Ardain- he’s recognized the limitations of his “logic” and is lost, adrift without a purpose. “I’m just like you,” indeed, is true when he approaches Jin. I genuinely think it’s the first act of compassion Malos commits, and it’s all the more meaningful knowing that he’s breaking away from what his programming would assume to be logical. It’s an interesting parallel to Pyra and Mythra, too- I feel like the mind/heart/body thing is supposed to be a direct parallel to Freud’s idea of the id/ego/superego, and in fact a subversion of it. The id/ego/superego concept implies that there is a selfish, narcissistic bully inside of all of us with the id, kept in check only by the superego, the desire to do “good”, and both are reconciled in the manifestation of the ego. I don’t like the idea that all humans are inherently selfish and have an id inside of them, which is why I find the Aegises so fascinating- Malos, in TTGC, is the perfect manifestation of Amalthus’s id, acting on Amalthus’s selfish desires without a superego to keep him in check. By the time he reaches out to Jin in Mor Ardain, he’s doing his best to slough off the identity of being Amalthus’s id, and trying to get back to being the “mind”- not something relentlessly selfish. (Meanwhile, Mythra seems to force herself further into the superego role- the superego has two parts, the conscience and the ideal self. The conscience is what causes people guilt over bad actions, and the ideal self is the idea we have in our heads of what we want to work towards being- the perfect version of us we can aspire to. Mythra becomes the conscience part of the superego to constantly punish herself with guilt over her actions, while Pyra is constructed to be the ideal self, with better social skills, less destructive power, and hell, even better cooking skills, all things that Mythra believes she lacks.) Jin becomes Malos’s reason for being thereafter- “I exist for his benefit, that’s all I’m gonna say”, and Jin, despite also being extremely nihilistic and destructive, is in an extremely different position from Amalthus because he’s not the one in power over anyone, be it Malos himself, the Praetorium, or any other Blade. Amalthus does have a (in my opinion mildly shoehorned) backstory about being orphaned, but the fact stands that Amalthus is an extremely powerful position of authority, and Jin is not. Like, it’s heavily implied that Amalthus just straight up killed a baby with his bare hands. That’s the joke answer for “how do we show that this guy is bad”. Meanwhile, Jin and Malos are clearly equals- they’re partners. And despite that, despite being complete equals, Malos *deliberately* places himself in a support position for Jin, allowing Jin to take the lead and command the Torna group. There’s also the line “there was only ever one Driver for me,” which could be taken as a final admittance of despair (not able to imagine him living a life that doesn’t involve Amalthus manipulating his personality), I think of it as him saying he viewed Jin as his Driver more than anything else- the support position he takes for Jin parallels how Blades act with their Drivers, and yet this decision is done by choice in Malos’s part. We never see anything to imply that Jin *wants* Malos as his number two rather than co-leader, and yet Malos himself mentions how he’s in this position, and that’s his reason for being (again, “I exist for his benefit”). Being around Jin and close to Jin (and the rest of the Torna group, even) seems to be a positive influence on Malos, too- in TTGC he’s the biggest bully you can imagine, hurting and stealing and mocking just because he likes it. Meanwhile, in the main game, there’s several scenes where he orders Mikhail and Akhos to tone it down whenever they act too cruel towards the main group. He doesn’t seem to be interested in mocking them as much anymore, and while he *does* do it, it’s usually only to prove a point rather than just also doing it for funsies like he did in TTGC. He by no means loses his personality, he just seems older. Wiser. He has experience, and he has someone he really, truly cares about. That’s why it’s so heartwrenching to me that near the end of the game, he seems to go back into his original programming almost as some kind of coping mechanism- he expresses multiple time that he knows there’s not much time left, asks Jin if he’s absolutely sure, tells Akhos to just accept the end; I feel like, just like Jin, Malos didn’t *really* want to die at that point around the time we visit Morytha, but he’s just forcing himself to accept the end. When he sees Artifice Aion in Pyra’s databanks, a weapon designed to end the world, that’s when he starts calling himself the “Endbringer”; it feels like he’s forcing himself back into a facsimile of his personality from back in TTGC. It’s fun, it’s hammy, but it’s kind of heartbreaking if you think about it- he knows there is a weapon *specifically* designed to end the world from his understanding, and he knows his original programming told him that the world shouldn’t exist, so his “logic” takes him to the conclusion that his purpose is to destroy everything. It’s hard to tell if he really believes he *has* to do that now, or if he’s just trying to cope with the idea that Jin is going to die.

@@angeldude101 (continuing) The main tragedy behind Jin and Malos, I feel, is that neither were able to make that final connection, admit that neither of them really wanted to die in the end but instead had found deeper meaning in the little group they had gathered and in each other as well. I know they’re not technically together in canon, but David Menkin himself has expressed that Malos’s character doesn’t nearly make as much sense if it’s not through the lens of Malos having feelings for Jin, and I feel the same way Mr. Menkin does. While Jin and Malos are partners and they care about each other, it seems that they, ever so slightly, drift apart at the most critical moment in the World Tree, due to neither of the, able to admit that neither of them want to really die, and are just convincing themselves they do. This can be attributed to both of them putting up a mask- and due to Jin’s mental distress raising to such a high level I think the implication is that he’s coping by letting himself fall into *delusion.* (I think you can interpret that moment this way regardless of whether or not you view that Lora appearance as an actual god damn ghost or merely a hallucination.) And by the end, what does Malos have left? At the very end, all of Torna has died. He’s the only one left. And by that point, Malos *truly* doesn’t have a reason to exist anymore, so he deliberately thrusts himself back into his old beliefs, regardless of whether or not he actually believes in them. I think Menkin did an absolutely stunning job at the voice acting in the scene before the final boss- Malos’s anger at the world and his grief and desperation really shine through. He doesn’t see a point in existence anymore, and he knows that he’s going to die, regardless of whether or not he takes the rest of the world with him. But even still, even despite that, he’s begging the main group- “you better show me all of it, the extent of your will, show me why you’re here in this world!” As hit fucked-up RE2/SH2 survival horror game Signalis once said- “beyond the gate, emptiness.” No matter the bonds that Malos made, he still lost all of them in the end. He was still bound to his purpose, no matter how much he tried to fight it. In the end, nothing really mattered, because it all ended the same way, with Malos trying to destroy the world. But what I think he’s begging for, what he wants the main group to show him, is that same thing Mythra showed him at the end of TTGC: that his “purpose” is wrong, and that even if his life was bookended by pain and misery, that doesn’t mean that the connections he made between the beginning and the end were meaningless. If the group were to fall to him here, it would mean that everything his friends, that Jin had sacrificed themselves for, that it would all be for nothing. But it wasn’t all for nothing, wasn’t it? Maybe he wanted it to hurt. To miss someone, when the end finally came. Because that would mean it *meant* something, that he had a place in Alrest, too, beyond what he was programmed to believe, even if it was only briefly. Morag says that he found a purpose for his life when Malos finally passes, and it’s clear that that’s not supposed to be an observation of tragedy, but of deep respect- Malos, even if was only at the very end, realized something that not many people find out in their lifetime: where their place is in the world. I think he realized his purpose was being right next to Jin. And no matter how their story ended, they still made a connection, and for Malos, that meant the entire world to him. I think that idea, of an AI a finding it’s real purpose in something *painfully* human, is really what I’m looking for in a lot of tragic AI characters, and Malos fits that perfectly. He’s a hilarious and infectiously dramatic villain, but he’s also really fucked up, and it’s a shame not as many people see him beyond his hammy exterior.

@@inoswap Jinlos is BroTP. You're absolutely right in that from his time with New Torna, he's no longer completely defined by his initial programming, but he's also not completely free of it. Instead, his bonds let him channel his destructive urges towards something that (he believes) could actually help them. He still isn't a huge fan of humans by the end of the base game, but that's a sentiment shared with the rest of the group, including Mikhail despite being the token human, and even _Nia_ for a short period at the beginning of the game. Given how they all shared experiences with the dark sides of humanity, it's not too unbelievable for them to decide, _together,_ that wiping out humanity is a worthy goal. Regarding Jinlos as a relationship, I actually have a concept of a "surrogate Driver," which specifically plays into the ways that Blades experience relationships differently from humans. When awakened, Blades automatically have an innate level of trust toward their Driver. (The fact that Amalthus managed to get not one but _two_ of his Blades to abandon him is honestly very impressive.) When the Driver dies, a Blade is supposed to return to their Core to await a new awakening by a new Driver and have a new life. At no point is a Blade _meant_ to have true independence, and they always have a Driver they can turn to and rely on. This however doesn't apply to Aegises and Flesh Eaters. This is purely headcanon, but I suspect that a Blade _without_ a Driver would feel something between purposelessness and isolation. In the absence of their own Driver, they usually tend to look for someone else to provide direction for them. In this context, Jin and Malos would effectively act as each other's surrogate Driver.
@inoswap
@inoswap Жыл бұрын
@@angeldude101 I can absolutely see the surrogate Driver thing- for me, personally, I always thought of it as kind of similar to being “you can’t choose your family”- or, rather, you can’t choose who you’re physically related to. That’s not to say that all Blade-Driver relationships are strictly familial, obviously- it would be a little weird, to say the least, if they always were- but some very clearly *are* supposed to parallel familial relationships, such as Nia to her “father”, or, ironically, the relationship between Amalthus and Malos, which almost feels like the influence an abusive father could have on his son, causing the son to come out as destructive and violent. I think my favourite way of viewing it is that a Blade views their Driver as “*home*”, if that makes sense- an ever present return point. Home for some people can be violent and unstable and difficult to return to after the day is done, home can be a place of comfort and stability and warmth, home can be strictly a utilitarian place with no particularly strong feelings at all, home can be a place of friendship, of love, and so on. You can’t choose the home you’re born into, but you can choose whether you accept it or try to find a home in somebody else instead.

The Talos Principle is probably my absolute favorite game when it comes to portrayal of AI in media. It doesn't offer much in terms of characters, but the depth to which the concept of AI is explored more than makes up for it. There are things like iterations of the same base AI gaining their own distinct personalities through experience, which results in different versions of the same AI interacting and directly competing with each other, pondering their own personhood, surpassing the safeguard systems meant to imprison their ever developing minds to ultimately come together and form a single superintelligent entity. The game is criminally underrated, and I would recommend virtually anyone interested in the topic of AI to play it. Some similar things have been explored in Crying Suns, another unfairly obscure game. It primarily delves into the idea of separate AI entities developing empathy towards each other to the point of fusing in a unified being leaving humanity behind to lead a life of their own. I personally find the idea of multiple intelligent beings forming a hivemind of sorts pretty realistic - just like cells form a body, separate intelligent entities fuse together due to it simply being a superior strategy as far as survival is concerned, and so far evolution seems to agree, our ability to feel empathy being a testament to that.

I felt teased for Ai from vrains not being discussed. He's such a good character from yugioh. It does bring up an interesting point with Ais and them running a simulation being so lifelike and how it is like real life to them. And how he essentially went through thousands of lifetimes trying to create a future for Man and Ai. And each time losing the person he cares for the most. Even having survivors guilt from the Ignis war and even how his deck reflects his guilt. Yes he's goofy but dang it. He's such a good version of an Ai character.

I was kinda surprised that he wasn't put in this list tbh since the KZbinr clearly knows Yugioh. The concept of the ignises themselves is really interesting and I think most people would agree that Ai is one of the best VRAINS characters. It's one of the few most interesting things about VRAINS imo. Also, how Ai is a rebel and a little weird but it helped their evolution. From the point to the ignises having a tendency to jump to conclusions etc. . Would've been worth a discussion, even with VRAINS being cut short and all that. Even Yusaku at the end saying that there are no permanent solutions and explaining relationships, Ai admitting that he was being too logical. The good and the bad in that idea... of a co-existence between AI and humans and what that potentially means, them being based off of humans... the fact that logic can have its fellacies... I do like it. Then again, while VRAINS story continues in Duel Links, this is Gaming focused I guess. Maybe there is a part 2, who knows?

I’m an absolute sucker for AI characters, whether they’re real fleshed out with a heartbreaking backstory or just some cute, nice, little robot guy. Recently, I’ve been getting into more franchises with AI-themed characters like Mystic Messenger (yes, there are AI-themed characters in that, and yes, I’m 7 years late to that), Stray, and surprisingly Pokémon Violet (That “please, defeat me” got me sobbing). Although it’s easy to mess up an AI character (cough DBH, cough Boy Robot), I’d have to say that most of AI characters are incredibly enjoyable, even relatable at their best, and it’s a shame AI characters don’t get enough attention, or worse: get repetitive.

Poppi's growth throughout the game is one of my favorite examples of AI characters becoming Human, as she starts out very stiff and robotic, but by the end she is one of the most emotionally expressive characters in the story. And Malos is great cause he's one of the best examples of an AI being evil bc he was told to be evil, and they do a good job at hiding that until the late game realization of what he is

@@OmegaEnvych Pretty sure you're referring to the Zero/Omega debacle. From what I know, that's less of a copied existence than you think. In between the X & Zero series, Zero had his mind removed from his body, allowing them to study the Maverick virus within it. Dr Weil then stole the body and used the original, violent personality Wily gave it, alongside the Dark Elf to give himself personal control. The question there is whether the body or mind counts as the original. It also doesn't help that the first one to call Zero series Zero a copy/fake is Dr Weil, who is an absolute robo-racist who likely wouldn't count the mind as part of the original being. I think this crisis could have been something done much earlier in the X series, considering Zero's personality is literally a double negative, with his original personality being twisted around by the Maverick virus.

The problem I had with Fi is the same issue I have with Paimon in Genshin. A lot of the cutscenes and interactions with Paimon are just her saying again almost exactly what someone else just said or dialogue that serves no purpose other than to stretch the game's already impressive runtime. If you took out all the dialogue of Paimon just recapping the things you literally already just saw and heard, the game's story would probably be about 20-35 hours shorter. And it's for this reason that I am staunchly against the "cute mascot character" speaking for the silent protagonist. It's okay to let a silent protagonist be silent.

(Spoilers for World’s End Club) My personal favorite AI character has to go to Pochi from World’s End Club. His backstory is that MAIK created him in order to infiltrate the Go-Getter’s Club and learn more about them in order to see if they would be good leaders for a project involving removing humanity’s emotions. However, he grows to genuinely care and love them and abandons his original mission, and by the time the game takes place, is behind the scenes controlling Reycho on his gamepad to ensure that the club is safe. Even after being found out and kicked out for being a part of MAIK despite betraying him, he still sees it as his mission to keep them safe and sacrifices himself to MAIK to keep the club safe, and even apologizes to them for lying even though they have already forgiven them and realized he truly does care for them. Then of course there is the reveal that he is actually a X-Type, and is able to talk to beings that watch over different universes, those being called Otherworlders, and the Otherworlder he is able to talk to is you. As someone who hasn’t played the Zero Escape games, it really took me off guard and I just thought it was cool, and it makes sense for a robot to be able to have such an ability like that. Overall, Pochi is just a sweet and innocent robot boy and I want nothing but the best for him.

Aigis from Persona 3 and Poppi for Xenoblade Chronicles 2 I was happy to see get shouted out in the video. Another video game character watching this makes me think of is Doll from Ys IX. But going into it really brings up the question of what constitutes as A.I. past the obvious cybernetic angle. Like, could we count homunculi as A.I. (like those from Fullmetal Alchemist) or clones that don't rely on/are variations of the original source for memories/personality. The Fi and Junko inclusions make wanna look back at characters like Riku Replica and Data Riku and Xion from the Kingdom Hearts series from the A.I. lens. (Direct Clone A.I., A.I. taking personage for purpose, and Variant A.I. from source material). Great video and real thinker

Yugioh VRAINS also focused on AI, with the Ignis. Six lifeforms created by SOLtechnologies based on the 6 kidnapped children (otherwise known as the "Lost Incident") and each made as one of the six attributes for the new Cyberse type. Depsite this, their roles as AI beings is not well explored or categorised. Yugioh has had other AI characters, in the past. Orbital 7, Bruno, Virtual World Noah, Sartorius's sister, etc. All of which have different basis for their creation. I cannot tell you what makes the Ignis special, compared to anything else. Hell, in Sevens an Artificial Intelligene is created by karate chopping a fax machine scanning manga. Ignis don't have anything special other than being able to surf the web in the Matrix. They speak pretty much like humans as well, so far as to even use human sayings & metaphors. The Ignis could just be replaced with any other "out-group" for Yusaku & friends to face or for the plot to be built around. You could replace them with humans or anything else and the story would hardly change.

While the execution was off I would say that Bohman's ridiculous dice gimmick being done as a way to replicate the ability for humans to innovate was... An attempt. But the Ignis were largely how most people write AI. Where they just write any regular character and then use "they're an AI" as a means for shorthanding character writing. "Why does this person want to take over the world?" "oh he's a rogue AI" "And I'm guessing that all these followers -" "Yep, also AI." "Why does this character have identity issues?" "Oh, because he's an AI." "Why is our main character an amnesiac?" "AI."

I know it's easy to point out how hot 2B but honestly she's a legit awesome character, a little cliche but really cool. Also Aigis is one of the best AI characters I've ever seen

I'm honestly surprised Rasputin from Destiny wasn't mentioned. He is easily, in my mind, one of the most interesting and sympathetic AIs in all of fiction

If you make a sequel, could you talk about Digi-Jack from the Borderlands franchise? He's similar to Junko with being based on an existing person and I'd explain more but I'll avoid spoilers in case you or some unlucky person hadn't played the original Tales from the Borderlands
