Agree. Great advice. I've been growing succulents and veggies for a long time and try to simplify everything lol That sun can be difficult, but we can find sunny spots they like which is great. My succulents have been inside all year so far and they do great. Great sunny window is great east or west. West gets direct sun which is so much more intense than the afternoon, my succulents love eastern facing windows with full direct sun for 6 hours and than the afternoon bright indirect light for the rest of the day. They have been growing like crazy, no burn, no shock. Good luck to you all out there having trouble. This should help you. Thanks for sharing!

Newby here so I have wheat must be the stupidest question. I have south facing windowsills. Are the plants on the windowsill getting ‘direct’ full sunlight? As you can tell I am very confused. I’m a total indoor succulent grower (in Fort Worth) so far and trying to figure our who goes where. Another question, if it’s ok, would 3” away from the same window be indirect sunlight?
@SucsForYou
@SucsForYou 2 жыл бұрын
At certain times of the year, the sun is lower on the southern horizon so they might get direct sun. BUT indoors isn't a big deal as far as heat goes. Glass also filters out some of the rays so it's not as intense as outdoor direct sun. So winter south facing is a great option. 3-inches isn't going to make much difference.

Love your channel. I just tried to start a succulent design in Florida under direct sunlight. Boy was was I mistaken. So glad to learn more about these amazing little creatures. I still want to do art in that planter, but after watching this I think maybe they wouldn't have a fighting chance without a tree nearby and amazing drainage. Eeek.

I am new to succulents and have all my plants indoors under grow lights this winter. I’ll be moving them outdoors for the summer. I know I have to be careful because I live in New Mexico which has really strong sun. We have a patio that is completely covered, and a patio extension that will have a 60% slatted roof over it. Im hoping it will provide enough shade to keep plants from being burned. If not I’ll just have to bring the plants back inside under grow lights.

I really enjoyed the graphic showing the suns location at different times during the year. I’m going to look that at up and study it. And like you said, the sun’s rays keep changing and you have to make adjustments . I’ve learned that my succulents like one sunny ledge that I have facing north-east, so I moved most of my collection there. This is also a very hot area during the summer but the direct sun is only there in the early hours, so that’s a perfect spot for them.

Andrea, I have my sucs set up on a stand with the purple growlights on them (actually red and blue). The grow light thing is frustrating. I want my succulents because they are beautiful. Most grow lights are just plain ugly. It usually means that you have to have a special set up and that includes a table that does not go with my home’s decor. Sadly, we just do not have the kind of light that many succulents need so I have to use grow lights. I have both kinds. The lights with multiple colors and also white light. I’m not happy with either at this point. I have found faux succulents that look very nice. But I still enjoy the challenge of getting these things to grow.

Hey girl! I bought several Black Rose Zwartkop succulents a few weeks ago here in Houston, TX. I planted them in succulent soil with good drainage. However, we had a good amount of rain since then and it killed all of the leaves. Most of them had root rot so I threw those away but 2 of them still have a good root system. I replanted them in a smaller pot with drier soil and I'm really curious if the leaves (the stems are dried out too) will grow back because of the good root system. Please help!!! I would really appreciate your help!

Oh dang... ok. Sounds familiar :p Aeoniums are summer dormant and they already really don't like our heat and humidity. I think you'll need to put them indoors in a bright location and just wait until they 'wake up.' Don't water them any more than absolutely necessary - maybe a sip 2x a month or less. I got a cutting from a friend in Oakland early summer and am afraid to check to see if it has roots yet. It's in the video at about 18:25 - indoors in an East facing window. We'll just have to wish each other luck!!

Although I have not yet nailed the best location they sure as heck squawked loudly when I had it wrong. So, thank you for some great information. BTW I go to Houston quite frequently and I think it rains every time I go. Houston is probably 100 or so miles further south than my location in Louisiana and the difference is amazing. Houston seems to border on sub-tropical. I even see air plants growing on the oaks near Methodist Hosp. I was tempted to snag me one but couldn't bring myself to rip it from it's natural location. I really love your demonstration with the earth diagram. This really helps. When I started to watch your video, I said to myself Texas is way different than Minnesota. You bought your videos to a whole different level. Thank you so much for sharing information is such a wide array that anyone who watches your video is able to take away something from it. I struggle so much with lighting issues. First, I live in Mn. Second, my current apartment only has two windows and they are East facing. Summer I bring them out but in Winter, my plants only get morning natural light. The sun then crosses over to the other side of the apartment. Tough situation. Your video is really educating me and I can not thank you enough. Keep up the good work. Sharing positive information is like sending a little love out into the world. You make a difference.

Wonderful video. I live in SW Florida. Just starting my collection. I keep them on my lanai and they get morning sun for about two hours. They are on a table with an overhang so they do not get wet.

Hello again, I live in a tropical country where the sun is out almost everyday. I am wondering if i should put my succulents in the direct light or continue putting them in the shaded part of the balcony. Same question with my propagation tray. Its currently placed inside the house beside a window. Im worried my succs might not be getting enough sun, but also afraid to scorch them in the heat since it gets really hot in the tropics. Thank you Im very new to succulents so Im binge watching your videos to gain more knowledge about them :))
@SucsForYou
@SucsForYou 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Kiyo! The only time direct sun is okay is in the morning and/or if it's cool outside/indoors. It's hard to give them enough sun when it's really hot/tropical- It's the same here :/ So give them as much bright indirect/filtered light as you can. There are a lot of great succulents that do better in tropical climates!

I got spooked when you said "apartment in Brooklyn," because that's exactly me! lol Thanks for the extensive information about lighting :) I'm also curious about "stressing" succulents to bring out their vibrant colors. When I was visiting some of my relatives, one of my kooky uncles told me about putting succulents in the fridge every other day. I haven't seen/heard anything like that before, so I'm hesitant to try it out. I'd love it if you could do a video about stressing succulents!

LOL! There are a lot of people w/ apartments in Brooklyn that keep succulents so I had to include you :) And I have tried the fridge thing before - half hour at a time - no luck. Best to wait until temps cool naturally and give them as much bright light as they'll take :)

I live in Florida and I just started collect succulents. I currently have a few on a south facing window and some on a west facing window on the second floor. Which one is better? Where should I have the plants outdoor in the summer? I don’t have trees blocking the sun. I have a two story home facing east. So that gets the most shade. Also, I noticed you have your plants outdoor by a screen. Do you move them when it’s raining?

Hi Andrea ! Your vids are crazy helpful . Im in Houston as well and I was wondering if you had any tips for growing succulents in our specific climate. Do you find some plants do just as well indoors by a window , or would they do better outdoors ?
