00:00 Right Watch to Wear Introduction
If you like timepieces, and as soon as you have more than one watch in your collection, you now have a decision to make: Which one do I wear?
Ultimately, with things being far more casual these days, it’s a lot easier to wear different watches in different situations.
01:01 Casual
That means you want to skip the dress watches here. Elegant designs and timeless styling are much too jarring in these situations and won’t create a harmonious look. Instead, choose a watch that has practicality at the center of its design. Sports watches that boast features such as water resistance are right at home in casual scenarios.
02:30 Smart Casual/Semi-Casual/Everyday
Clothes in this category may very well overlap with your casual pieces, but the trick with the everyday dress code is being able to incorporate clothes of a slightly higher formality too. The watches from our previous casual category would also feel right at home here.
04:35 Business Casual
Things are now at a point where those super casual watches should now be left on the dresser. This dress code still allows for those smart strap choices to be seen but this time around you can start to add more refined leather.
Whichever strap you choose, the focus for watches in this category should be streamlining the face and features.
05:55 Business
The watches you choose for this formality are certainly on the dressy side. While some of the watches we just spoke about for business casual will still be absolutely fine here, there are some details you want to take care of.
07:09 Formal Wear
It may surprise you to hear that the answer is: No watch should be worn here. Traditionally, wearing a watch with your evening wear is considered poor etiquette. Having a timepiece displayed on your wrist or on a pocket watch chain gives the impression that you’re not fully invested in where you are.
As black tie rules are a little more forgiving than white tie, it is acceptable to add a timepiece to your black-tie ensemble. Assuming you’re following the classic styles of black tie outfits, this watch needs to be equally elegant.

I've been working in factories for years. A Casio digital watch is the most perfect thing for a dirty, damaging environment. I can smack it, scrape it, splash it with every type of liquid available or even put it through extreme temperatures and it always works. And it's easy to put on and off and stays on. Better yet, it's practical. It will show the date and time easily in a simple view, act as a quick timer and it glows for if you're working in a dimly lit area. Not enough to see by, but to tell the time.

@@vipeton.8927 Indeed. This one is a 70s-80s classic. Not sure what the sartori up-themselves cringelords have to say about classy digital watches though. I grew up wearing a Fossil leather cuff watch, 70s inspired/reproduction. It's been worn enough that the leather plys have delaminated from each other and nobody makes reproductions of the cuff. As a kid I loved it, still do but just can't wear it nor pull it off with most outfits if I revisited it today. I'd like a watch like that brand new, just not early 2000s digital fashion of course. I ended up switching to a Casio FW knockoff, wore that for a long time. Then switched to a Casio solar of the same type. I've since switched to a Seiko H601 as my daily watch, but I don't really wear watches anymore. Breaks up my silhouette and I'm not a fan of glancing at the time anymore either. For the past 3 years my dress watch is a 1970s Bulova Day Date in stainless steel. Timeless automatic beauty, restored before I received it in like new condition.

Pocket watches are a nice touch of distinction at the black tie level. For any business (emphasis on the "business") attire, they're quirky … which is either a big pro or con, depending on your line of business. For smart casual, it's likely a (over)statement. But that's something that some people can pull off. I've worn a pocket watch. (Mostly as smart casual.) I'm not trying to discourage you. Just be aware of the message you're potentially projecting.

Yes, 007 wears dive watches with his tuxedo and so do I. Dinner suits are not seen that often these days so most people are not aware that wearing a wristwatch with it is a fauxpas. As long as the dinner jacket has the correct fit, your bow tie is tied by hand, your shoes polished, your shirt has french cuffs etc. you will most likely be the best dressed guy regardless of that fauxpas. Want to channel your inner Bond? Then also ditch the cummerbund. Just do it with confidence.

So many questions I don’t know where to start…. Ok, so how do you feel about using a Rolex sports watch, specifically the Daytona, in these settings? Does a watch like that alter the rules? Or would you suggest a Datejust or Day-date? Get a smart watch and you will know real quick, check ,emails notifications time, texts and calls without pulling out a phone . The wrist watch allows you to glance at it to check the time without being obvious. It also is just an accessory that looks nice when out and about.

"We all have phones, computers, etc..." You'd like kind of silly booting up your laptop just to know what the time is, no? Pulling out your phone is better, but still a very obvious gesture. It's easy to disguise a glance at your watch, so it's not obvious that you're counting down to happy hour. And no, don't wear a plastic watch (smart or otherwise) unless you're working under your car or chopping wood. Wear something that makes you smile when you look at it.

I've been a watch enthusiast since childhood, but not a watch snob. I really love many watches that can be acquired for less than $500. I also love many that cost significantly more, but price often is not an indicator of quality. If I had to pick one brand that satisfies me with both their dress watches and more casual watches it is Hamilton, both new models as well as vintage. Oddly enough their vintage watches are American made, but their modern watches are Swiss made. A discussion of sizing should be included. Even the best watch for an occasion is wrong if its too big for your wrist. Unfortunately the most recent trends in watchmaking have seen much if not most of the case sizes getting larger with 40 mm now largely becoming a standard when 38 mm was more common 10 years ago and vintage watches typically made even smaller. I vastly prefer something no bigger than 38 mm unless the lug to lug distance is relatively small for its size. If you are a big guy its easy to go bigger, but if you are not, its getting harder and harder to find new watches that aren't too big. I definitely favor dress watches even in casual settings. I have never found dive watches suitable for anything other than diving. I don't do much diving. I fully realize that my view is rather extreme. I really don't have problems with others wearing dive watches in informal settings, but it just looks wrong to me the way many wear them with a suit or in more formal settings. A better substitute for dive watches in less formal settings are field watches and pilot watches.

I find the obsession with diver watches is hilarious. You say you don't do much diving. I am going to go out on a limb and suggest that less than 10% of those wearing diver watches have ever gone diving. It is one of those dream scenarios where they imagine themselves as more active than they are.

@@lisbetsoda4874 It's just a watch. If the diver is not chunky and clunky, it's perfectly okay to wear one especially in casual settings and moods. Vintage designs did it way better, yes they are big but not as much as today's tryhard diver chunky watches which scream (if they were a person) compared to the calm and cool design of the 80s and earlier. That's the only type of diver that I have. One is enough. My dress watch is a 1970s Bulova Day Date and I can still wear it in casual dress.

On the other hand, chunky divers and chronos rarely look good with suits and absolutely not with tuxedos. You’re not James Bond.

I think a dress watch will work for anything from smart casual to formal. But I think it's overdressed with casual casual (regardless of how you've chosen to wear it). A sample size of one (your experiences) … that's not irrefutable proof. You wore a dress watch into casual situations, and nobody hurled insults to your face. And maybe a few people offered you compliments (you didn't say so … and if they did, the might have been sartorially inept) … but I've received a large number of undeserved compliments in my life. Black tie or white tie means no watches should be worn. You don't wear watches when you go to an event. If you have to wear a suit, the best solution is a simple watch with a white dial and no complications that's "metallic" or "silver when it comes to the colour of the casing and has a simple black leather strap. A watch that is simple, with a white dial and not complications that has a "bronze" coloured casing and brown straps is less formal but can still look great with the right shoes and belt. The outfit will be a little less formal but that's another issue. Sports watches are far more diverse these days. You don't need a watch on a metal bracelet to have a sports watch. Plastic or rubber watch straps are very flexible and comfortable. You should own one.

I'd be interested to learn about the practicalities of swapping watch straps. How do you do it, what tools and skills are needed? What are the odds that you can use a strap on more than one watch? Are there practical differences between various types of strap? E.g. I like a strap that doesn't bulge at the fastening point, so that it won't dig into my wrist when I rest my arm on a desk (e.g. using a mouse). And if that means a metal bracelet with a flat "jeweller's clasp" for work, I'd like to swap it easily to a leather strap for an evening occasion.
@Psykel
@Psykel 2 жыл бұрын
It’s generally quite simple with a standard strap tool, which looks like a rod with a pin on one end and a two-pronged fork in the other. Some watches have some special strap fastenings with screws and such though, but those aren’t too common. You can wear any strap on any watch with the same lug width, so if you own several watches with, say, a 20mm lug width, you can swap straps between them. Straps or bracelets with curved ends might be tricky though, but 99% of after market leather straps have regular straight ends. When it comes to differences in straps, I’d recommend not swimming with a leather strap. You’re better off with a rubber or fabric strap, such as a nato strap or my personal favourite, a perlon strap. Perlon straps are woven nylon, super comfortable and easy to change. Works in lots of situations too and are perfect for summer. Check out Eulit, who invented the perlon strap and still makes them.

The standard watch strap that comes with your watch requires a tool (inexpensive, don't worry) to remove or replace it. As someone who changes watch straps with alarming regularity, I prefer quick-release watch straps. Using those, it takes a few minutes (at most) to swap straps. If you have a thumbnail (or a fingernail), that's enough of a tool to change quick-release straps. Most watch lug widths (and straps) are either 18mm, 20mm, or 22mm width. Obviously, you can't use a 20mm strap with a watch that has 18mm or 22mm lugs. But if you have multiple watches with 18mm lug widths, they can all use the same 18mm straps.

Big surprise, you don’t seem to talk about the most versatile watch: the smart watch. With easily changeable straps and faces, a smart watch can go great in multiple of those settings.

It's because those smart watches have no place in the discussion of "The right watch to wear with your outfits".

@@Psydrre sure they do. I’m wearing an Apple Watch right now with a natural shell cordovan strap. I have over 20 different straps that really enhance the versatility of the watch, which also serves as a communications and notification device. It’s got far more features and uses than a Casio, yet can be dressed up to be a perfect match for smart or business casual wear. In fact, when the watch face is set to be simple, it doesn’t even look that far off from a business-wear watch.

That is not even considered a watch, it has no place in the discussion. Also, just makes you look like you’re addicted to technology and/or social media. Quite distasteful and unnecessary in my opinion. But you should do whatever pleases you.

This guy has a wart on his watch wearing hand and he is chubby guy number 2 - even worse than Kyle. What exactly is he adding to the team. Way too casual, as well. He comes across as borderline sloppy.

@@lisbetsoda4874 I used to like Kirby Allison, but GG - what it used to be - and Sartorial Talks are the best channels. I've been watching Robert Powers for years, he's a thrifty sort. Very handy and professional for a hobbyist but he's branching out into more things that he wants to do. That's what I like, he does what he wants and it still works for the past 2 years. I like Raphael because he shows you how to break the rules. I like Hugo Jacomet because he inspires me to be truly unique, and since I had somewhat of a punk upbringing for much of my early years, his approach to this whole thing really works for me. He's traditional, yet has attitude and raw passion for what he's trying to achieve. I don't mind Kirby Allison but he's way too traditional for my taste, doesn't seem like he bends much established rules and plays it safe. He dresses a bit too sharp, or whatever it is I'm trying to express, but also the presentation of the videos is too rudimentary and almost infomercial. I liked him more 2-3 years ago. I haven't felt like watching him anymore. I can't say I've ever mastered what I'm going for, but the first time I felt like I got the hang of it was because of Raphael, though, I watched some of Antonio Centeno and "Teaching Mens Fashion" years ago knowing that they obviously are showing bare beginner tutorialised videos. I'm glad I thought outside the box all that time ago which landed me where I am, definitely grateful. Just feeling like my feet are growing out of my shoes, in a manner of speaking.

@@SPNKr16 I agree about Kirby being overly conservative to the point of pompous. He does do interesting interviews and such, though. As far as Hugo is concerned, he can do no wrong. His show is superb. Enough said! Robert Powers. Will check out.
