No one in the history of singing this song since it first came out back in 1955 has sung this song better then the late great 'Bobby Hatfield' of 'The Righteous Brothers.' This performance done live ten years later in 1965 on the 'Andy Williams Show.' Is one of the greatest live performances in television history. The Andy Williams orchestra arrangement on this song made sure to have the violins become the focal instrument of this the greatest version ever of 'Unchained Melody.' On this night 'Bobby Hatfield' cemented his legacy as one of the greatest tenors in music history.

@@randiewasserman8831 Thank you for your kind comment. Composer Alex North's immortal melody is one that will never be forgotten. This genius composer wrote so many compositions for dozens of movies that he will be most remembered for a little known b-prison movie titled "Unchained" (1955). Hence the title of the song "Unchained Melody." His other great works were: A 2001 A Space Odyssey, Spartacus, Cleopatra, A Street Car Named Desire and much, much more. Check out his bio. You will be pleasantly surprised...

The truth is, I'm not sure if I really believe there's a "GOD" up there (or down there) but if there is, or was, he, she or it must have shot a bolt of talent down to earth going right through Bobby Hatfield. An absolutely magnificent and unique performance, never to be duplicated. I'm 81 and during those years have heard just about every "great" song. No one, or nothing, compares to this one by Bobby. Your reaction was superb - and thanks for not interrupting like so many other "reactors". Have you done a reaction to "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" by both brothers?

HI NELO, BOBBY HATFIELD HAD WHAT WE CALL "THE X-FACTOR". HE HAD A GOD GIVEN MUSICAL GIFT. THE DECISION WAS MADE FOR THIS SONG TO BE SUNG AS A SOLO AND BOBBY DID JUST THAT. HE HAD A GREATER VOCAL RANGE THAN BILL MEDLEY (his partner) HE SUNG THIS SONG SOFTLY, SWEETLY, SMOOTHLY, SENSUALLY ANS WITH SOUL GRIPPING PASSION THAT WAS SO PURE AND CLEAN. AND YOU MUST REMEMBER THIS SONG WAS SUNG OUT IN THE OPEN WHERE BOBBY JUST HAD A PUNY MICROPHONE WITHOUT ALL THE TECH HELP YOU GET THESE DAYS.. I HAVE HEARD MANY VERSIONS OF THIS GREAT SONG, BUT BOBBY DID IT BEST - PERIOD. HE OWNS THIS SONG. THIS SONG WAS ICONIC AND WAS IN THE WELL KNOWN FILM "GHOST" STARRING PATRICK SWAZYE AND DEMI MOORE. LASTLY, BOBBY HAD "MOVIE STAR" GOOD LOOKS AND ALONG WITH A GREAT VELEVETY, SENSUAL VOICE, WAS LOVED BY THE GIRLS BACK THEN AS WELL AS NOW. I am 81 and have heard several artist before Bobby’s version and several after. No one comes close to this, Bobby owns it. This version came out as I was headed for Viet Nam. You can feel the loneliness in the words and the way we felt as we were away from our families for one long year. Bill and Bobby always did one solo on each of there albums and while on tour. They both wanted to do “Unchained”, so they flipped a coin. The music was written as the theme for the little-known prison film “Unchained” (January 1955), hence the song title. Todd Duncan sang the vocals for the film soundtrack. It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by the Righteous Brothers. The movie “Unchained” is about a man in prison and longing for his wife and children. Hoping his wife will still be there when he gets out. So you can now understand the meaning of the song. The movie was not very good, or so my friends told me. But we were all teenagers so what did we now. Several artists sang it and it made the billboard top 100. But no one can come close to Bobby Hatfield’s version. Bobby’s version hit the top ten chart. And did it again when it was used in the movie “Ghost” It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by Bobby. According to the song's publishing administrator, over 1,500 recordings of "Unchained Melody" have been made by more than 670 artists, in multiple languages.
