Interesting enough, just like with ringu, that strange and noise on the tape is actually Samara’s nails scratching against the well while she is trying to climb out. As for the faces being distorted, it’s basically what you look like underwater. It’s so interesting that such minor details get overlooked. It makes it so much darker and creepier. I used to love this movie as a kid. I still do. I love to put it on on a rainy day. I do feel like the original is much more unsettling, but I appreciate both nonetheless. They give off such different vibes.

7:28 I actually have a kinda/not really similar story. Back in 2011, I had a PS2 slim that was hooked up to my living room tv. I ordered a new copy of the game Fatal Frame 2 that had just arrived. For those unaware, Fatal Frame is a video game where you fight ghosts by taking pictures of them with a camera. My plan was to play it all throughout the night with the lights off. Everything was fine for a few hours but all of a sudden the PS2 just freezes on a black screen, music still running and everything. That was the first (and only) time my PS2 had ever done that. I immediately turned off the game and went to bed lol. Next day I fired up the game again and everything was fine. It never happened again while playing that game or any other game. Not saying it was ghosts or anything, but the coincidences of my PS2 acting up on that day, at midnight, while playing that game (new copy)...spooky shit man.

I think The Ring is a very contextual movie, meaning u just have to be there when it was released to feel the horror of it. First of all, the TV scene was too iconic that it was oversaturated in pop culture that it became desensitized for modern viewers. Also, nowadays people dont use VHS tapes anymore but back then, that scene is all everyone can talk about. My sisters watched a lot of movies in the past but even she claimed no movie haunted her for years the same way Ring does.
@lessismore85332 ай бұрын
PREACH! Ppl in 2002 got it the BEST’ until things like overexposure AND “Scary Movie” ruined its image. “The Ring” worked SO well back then! It’s a shame it wore off. If you watch the mini horror film called “Rings 2005” it was MUCH better than The Ring sequel . I wish the Ring could’ve made another movie that was PARODY proof and has better staying power…

I've seen parts of this movie as a child and heard about the tape from my friends. My whole childhood I slept in a room with a TV. It's furnished in a way that when I layed down, I couldn't see the TV, so going to sleep was really fun for a looooong time 😂. And to add to my misery, I also heard about Bloody Mary at around the same time. To go to the bathroom, I had to walk next to a mirror in the hall and obviously there's a mirror in the bathroom, so not only was I terrified to lose sight of the TV, I was afraid to use the bathroom. Ah, good old times... I really know what you went through 😂

I'm so glad that you have a more critical opinion towards this remake. I find the original so much better, because it don't try to be uncanny or scary-edgy, it just is. My two principals critiques are that the original is natural lit, all the lights give a real vibe, like just another day, while the remake has this blue or green filter in it, also that Samara is portrait like this exorcist-zombie girl on the final scene with full face reveal, were the original is much more subtle and show less giving it more room to be scary. The final scene has better effects, but the whole sense of unease from the original is gone.
@J.J.Jameson_of_Daily_Bugle3 ай бұрын
I think the low budget gritty look of Ringu is what added to it's creepiness. It's like original TCM. Yes, other movies in the series were more professional, bigger budget, better FX, etc, but the slick look just reminded you are watching Hollywood production, while original felt more like documentary because of the way it was shoot and looked. Also keep in mind that VHS itself simply doesn't have the same effect again, people don't use it anymore and newer generations didn't grew up with it, so they kinda have desensitized look towards them. I remember watching one found footage movie during FF craze, and it had killer sending VHS tapes to group and they are suppose to watch them. I remember going "Well who on Earth would even have VHS player now?" Heck at this point, most don't even use DVD players. Even VHS series doesn't use VHS tapes anymore as plot device, which I find hilarious.

@lessismore85335 ай бұрын
I knew this wouldn’t score as high, but it’s still pretty good for a remake. Gore Verbinski was up against Ringu 1998 a hard act to follow! But it don’t matter at the end of the day because BOTH versions got ppl GOOD back then! i remember “7 days” being quoted all the time. I also remember certain video stores being shut down. It’s not essential for a remake to “beat” an original ..as long as it’s good enough to do its own thing. Daveigh Chase did a great job ads Samara..given she’s also Lilo from “Lilo & Stitch”.

True! I like to pretend Rings 2017 didn’t happen. The TV scene is iconic but you can ONLY pull it off once! Repetition is not creative. That 2017 film was just a cash grab. You’re supposed to innovate and stay creative. Sad because even the American Ring franchise had potential past the 2002 film. Instead of The Ring 2 we got in 2005, there’s a short called “Rings 2005”. GREAT sequel potential…

i may be wrong, but there is a difference between the American and Japanese version. Samara cannt go out of the TV until her body was released from the Well. The Japanese version showed Sadako leaving the TV prior to the finding of the Body. I love the American version hihi
@bjarneandersson9745 ай бұрын
Gotta to admit I felt you were a bit hard on this movie. I think it was implied that the "plot contrivances" were Samaras way of guiding Rachel towards releasing her. The only big problem I had with the movie was that we never really saw a differences between free Samara and Samara still stuck in the well, she seemed just as strong when she was in the well as she was when she had been released.
@lessismore85332 ай бұрын
I agree he was a bit too critical but I felt he would be because he saw Ringu first. What do you mean just as strong in the well? Just like Sadako, Samara was helpless to climb out until she died and became more powerful and created the tape..
@bjarneandersson9742 ай бұрын
@@lessismore8533 Yeah I agree we seem to be prejudiced in favor of the version we saw first. Sorry I do not completely follow your train of thought, she created the tape when she still was in the well, right? She murdered those teenagers when she was in the well and (if I remember correctly) there is even some evidence that the manner she kill the teenagers is the same as with the boyfriend (T.V static and water). It seems to me that releasing Samara didn't change all that much. I´m sure there is some sort of expansion on this in Ring 2 but I only remember it vaguely and didn't like it all that much

I don't think I've ever been this early for a Horror Mine upload 🎊🎊 the style of the tape really gives Courage the Cowardly Dog vibes, with the hue of the colors and the almost painterly style to it. I also have to laugh at the "7 days" warning because it's a joke to my family. We went out to dinner one night and halfway across the restaurant a man was saying "SEVEN DAYS! A WHOLE WEEK!" extremely loudly. Nobody can say "7 days" in my family now without gentle mocking of "7 days? A whole week?!" Thanks for the upload!! Quite a few effective scares, the best in my opinion being the dead body in the closet. Rachel's constant reading aloud was a tad odd though. I know some folks watch remakes because they don't want to read subtitles on the original, but this is ridiculous. P.S. I live in the Pacific Northwest and I can assure you, the film's color filter is accurate. It's lovely, especially in the fall, though living here does lessen the spook factor of the mossy cabins in the movie, lol.

Ringu will ALWAYS be superior, but Ringu is actually even scarier after reading the book that the film is based on, because the book goes into so much more depth for Sadako’s backstory.
@lessismore85332 ай бұрын
The Ring isn’t that far behind Ringu . Gore Verbinski did pretty darn GOOD for not being the original Ringu director. We all know the Japanese director would’ve nailed the remake. I DO think some minor things about the 2002 movie is superior like Samara actually looking dead in the end, and the girl closet jump scary was way better executed!..
@cherrymnm042 ай бұрын
@@lessismore8533 look, I don’t mind the Gore Verbinski remake if I’m after some jump scares, but Ringu is always going to be better in every aspect for me. Ringu doesn’t rely on CGI and jump scares, and the horror is far more subtle, the scares come from the oppressive sense of foreboding throughout the film. I’m in no way bagging The Ring, it has its place in the horror genre, I just feel like through the scriptwriting and adaptation process they missed (or misunderstood) the nuances in Ringu.

It's going to be a bit more compact too, but still keep it's unique attributes as it's Original Design was, before it was demolished in 2014.
