Fun fact: The cinematography in the movie pans below the water to look at Rachel while she's in the well and she appears blurry which explains why you appear blurry in photos and videos, it's how Samara would see you under the water.

You wanna know what’s really creepy? When the DVD of this came out in 2002 it had an Easter egg on it. What Easter eggs USED to be on DVDs was a hidden menu selection that you couldn’t see until you, usually, accidentally selected it without knowing it. By pushing the up, down, left, and right buttons on the remote while on a menu page… Like the one where it just says play/special features/bonus/behind the scenes/etc type of thing. I didn’t know that the DVD had a Easter egg on the main menu. But I accidentally found it because while I sat down to get ready to watch the movie, I pushed the controller button on my remote accidentally and the selection that was on the play icon on the screen disappeared. I hit ‘Enter’ thinking that it would just play the movie, but it played the creepy video that’s in the movie… It played it full screen by itself. Then the screen went black for several seconds and then the VERY loud sound of a phone ringing. Freaked the shit out of me and I didn’t even see the movie yet. I can’t wait for next weeks movie. It too is very creepy. Enjoy! 💙💙💙

This movie is eerie more than scary. Since it keeps you in a state of uneasy suspense, you cannot release that tension by screaming or laughing as you would when the jump scare happens like in other horror movies. It even deprives the viewer of seeing the boyfriends death. I think this is an american remake of a Japanese horror movie If you want fun jump scares, then watch Resident Evil (lots of fun. Not horror though)

suspense/psychological and/or jump scares and/or "action'y-violence" (examples: the ring, resident evil franchise, alien franchise, and etc) vs horror/slasher/"classical-horror-violence" (examples: halloween, friday the 13th, nightmare on elm street, etc) vs extreme-violence/torture/brutality/cruelty/etc (examples: the Saw movies, texas chainsaw masscre, etc) ---------- most of this movie (the ring) is suspense, aside from the beginning and ending, which is horror ------- I'd put 'the grudge' movie in between suspense and horror, for another example
@embran8486
@embran8486 2 жыл бұрын
That's what true horror when term is set is: constant unsettling feeling. You are on edge while no sudden shock elements caused it. And when it happens it is double effective. Many jumps makes you used to it. That's opposite of horror = terror. So the movie succeeds on staying true to traditional Horror format eeriness and subtlety and scares not far off. Nevertheless Japanese one even more so. Oddly enough the American is focused more on jumpscares than OG one so if this was subtle enough for you...Ringu follows typical Asian mythos and culture, the Ring adapted to American/Western audience. Ringu often has a distancing effect, not for everyone. More artsy and the bizarre, VHS tape scarier.

The director of The Ring went on to do the Pirates of the Caribbean films lol, he's a good director. And he got Hans Zimmer, the famous composer, to do both The Ring and Pirates with him. If Hans does the score, you know it's probably going to be a good film haha. The Others with Nicole Kidman is a great horror film.

My cousin and I watched this movie in theaters. The movie terrified us. Especially that tv scene. When we left to be picked up by my mom, it was dark. We got in, and didn't see anything wrong at first. Then my mom said she had a surprise for us in the back of the car.... We turn around... and right behind us was a brand new giant television set. I think our screams of terror freaked out my mom... but seriously???? 😵‍💫

The 'body in the closet' scene is genius. It's too short to convey the clear picture but long enough to 'imprint' the ghostly face of the corpse to your mind. Now you can only imagine what was she had been through before she died, and that's powerful.

@@koreancowboy42 people often think Ju-On: The Grudge (2002) is the first movie however its only the first theatrically released in the series…the actually first two Ju-On are Ju-On: The Curse (2000) & Ju-On: The Curse 2 (2000)…they are both low budget V-Cinema movies…Ju-On: The Curse (2000) is set in 1994, 1995 & 1996 respectively…Ju-On: The Curse 2 (2000) is set in 1996 only with the end chapter from the previous movie set in 1994 being recycled at the very beginning…30 minutes are recycled from the first, with an additional 40 minutes being added…the ending of Ju-On: The Curse 2’s narrative fits right into Ju-On: The Grudge (2002) because the characters of and end segment “Saori” the characters Chiaki, Saori and Ayano are all talking in the Saeki house, that “Saori” segment takes place in 2006. Ju-On: The Grudge (2002) takes place mostly in 1999 with only the “Izumi” chapter taking place in 2006. The entirety of Ju-On: The Grudge 2 (2003) is the climax of the saga and is also set entirely within 2006, with the very end taking place around 2010-2011…and also the film reuses Chiharu from Ju-On: The Grudge (2002) as this time around a main character getting her own chapter which is absolutely nightmare fuel…

I saw it with my friends in theatres too, it was a late-night mystery show they used to do, where the audience walked in without knowing what movie was going to play. We did not know what we walked into, and all four of us were so scared after this that we all had to stay in our friend's house because she could not sleep alone. She lived by herself in an old house back then, and she was seriously scared. We all were, so we all just slept there for the night. I don't recall being so scared before or after that night. 23:17 The part that I always found freaky about this scene is that Samara looks up in the medical footage and it looks like she's about to say something to the interviewing doctor present... And then you realize that Samara is actually looking _through the screen and through time_ at Rachel and the real reason she looks up at that moment is because she can see her father is about to hit Rachel.

This is one of the best horror movies...so well made. I'm glad you guys can see it as well One of the reasons this movie is so great, besides their impecable storytelling, is the color palette, it looks cold and "rotten" almost like you're "dead" underwater (like Samara) which added to the overall well developed athmosphere, besides, the horror there is quite artsy which makes you even more uncomfotable (referring to the entire tape thing and the elements that connected throughout the story) The mystery, the suspense... Quite superb.

I just knew this movie was going to fuck me up. And it did. For months I woke up and checked my arm for a burn mark 😂😂 awesome movie. I will always watch this movie when it's on.

This movie is one of my favourite horrors because it relies on an unnerving atmosphere to bring about the scares, as opposed to cheap jump scares. And it does this through excellent filmmaking techniques like camera angles music etc. even the colour palette the green black and grey ominous Color tones. And most of all you’re experiencing the horrors as they unfold through Rachel‘s perspective. And seeing as she’s an investigative reporter she’s discovering the story as she goes along. Keeps you guessing till the very end. The Day count too adds a sense of dread and tension. You’re absolutely right about being made to feel uncomfortable that’s what the movies goal was over all. Like that feeling youre being watched. Or you’ve woken up from a nightmare. That uneasy feeling.
@PrimeCircuit
@PrimeCircuit 2 жыл бұрын
I agree. The movie feels like the observer is sliding into a different dimension. The most unnerving part for me was watching the movie within the movie, one becomes the protagonist. A lot of people complain about the acting, but for me the atmosphere requires a lowkey performance. Everyone in the movie seems unnaturally depressed, maybe even suppressed by outside influences. Life seems meaningless and flat, the way Samara experienced it from her perspective through the TV.
@GigaChaadam
@GigaChaadam 2 жыл бұрын
@@PrimeCircuit Thats a Great metaphor actually. You’re Right. The way we as viewers are forced to experience the world of Samara as one with the protagonist, like it is indeed her twisted perception and alternate dimension. And there’s even some subliminal rings dotted throughout some frames of the film for what feels like an 8th of a second. Blink and you’ve missed it. And it all goes back to samara‘s goal of forcing the world to experience her pain her story. Including us as viewers. Almost like breaking the 4th wall because we’re made to feel what the protagonist feels by clever filmmaking.

Actually, this is my fav movie of all time, and I can't count how many times I've rewatched it lol, it makes me calm and scream in appreciating every artistic element of it, and I am really thankful that you guys pointed and appreciated the visuals of it because it is literally flawless, the blueish color scheme with the shooting locations alongside the genius soundtrack by hans zimmer "which is also my fav score of all time" really set to tone to an out of this world psychological experience. the details and hints are insaneeeee even the concept of the title of the movie itself when they make random rings through the movie that connects everything. it's sooooo freaking good and artistic I can't stop talking about it. everything is very well done and perfect to my eyes, it messed up my childhood and that fear has changed to be obsession haha. glad you watched it/liked it. One extra cool thing about this movie is when it was released VHS was still a valid format and like you said it makes you uneasy like “did I just watch the tape now” but to rub that feeling in even more when you watched this movie on a vhs tape there was an Easter egg where the time code was constantly messed up and would make your vhs player display weird shapes and glyphs instead of the time stamp.

You LIKE movies with cheap jump scares? Jump scares in movies are like a comedian running into the audience, tickling you and saying "technically you laughed so I'm funny!" the ring is one of the few movies that earns the jump scares because there's proper buildup and not just a dumb "scary" thing popping up on the screen with a loud noise.

@@whitenoisereacts So the word you were looking for in your after thoughts was unease. This film is a masterclass in uneasiness and dread which is what makes a movie scary without just adding the loud DUN noise. You could add that sound to literally anything and make it loud and it will make someone jump which is why it's cheap and overused. You know you're watching a good scary movie when you're genuinely uncomfortable and full of dread and you may not even know why. Also when a movie doesn't just show you something scary and instead lets your imagination do the work. So many dumb horror movies think that showing all the horror on screen makes it scary. it doesn't. We never see what Samara does to kill her victims and that makes it scarier because your imagination takes over and your imagination is much more powerful than anything you see on screen.

This is one of my top five favorite horror films, and a remake I prefer over the original. It also draws heavily from the the 1980 film The Changeling, as well as 1981's Ghost Story. It definitely has a running theme of neglectful parents running throughout, and the opening scene was a bit of commentary of horror films of the day...the 1990's were full of teen horror films, and coming when this did made it start off looking like one until the opening scene ended and the teen influence went right out the window. By the way, the image on the tape that's an overhead shot of people writhing in the water was a reference to the music video for 21st Century Digital Boy by Bad Religion, as the director for this film did all their early videos, which is also why there's a sticker for the band in Noah's cabinet.
