I believe that dialogue can be objectively quantified on different merits. For instance, its tonality, its logical cohesion and its propriety to the era the main drama is portrayed in. From the top of my head, the initial 'parable' with the stone and the ship on the very first episode leaves a lot to be desired in its cohesion as its meaning is completely esoteric knowledge to the writers. It cannot be easily decrypted and has little meaning to the unfolding drama. It is more of a liability than a benefit to the episode and, as such, can be considered an objectively lacking piece of writing.

How amazing it would have been if the season ended instead with the One Ring showing up as Galadriel realised who Sauron is as he incapacitates her, sure it breaks Lore but it would have made her depowering here make sense and actually serve a function and all that build up be more than worth it. Something like Galadriel: there was no Heir to the Southlands Sauron: I can explain Galadriel: who are you and what is your purpose here Sauron: This *activates the One Ring, Galadriel: ahh *writhes in pain as her ring is dominated by Sauron Sauron: Celebrimbor made fine Rings of Power, if I say so myself, truly beautiful worthy of Feanor, however it still pales compared to mine. Galadriel: *screams more, the Rings, what have you done. Sauron: in due time, however I am giving you a choice, stay by my side, be my sword and consort and together we can save Middle Earth from Chaos. Galadriel: * looks in disgust Sauron: think about it, no more petty politics, no more chains to bind you only your Will and Mine. Galadriel: No, you do not command me Servant of Morgoth. Sauron: A pity, than I am afraid we have none left to discuss, my Lady, take her to the dungeons*as he leaves to make Mordor

I smelled the festering bullshit from miles away ever since seeing those first trailers and promos. Before that, I was mildly excited, but that changed fast... 😮💨 Quick story: My roommate and best friend, who is a major Tolkien fan and way more knowledgeable of the lore than I'll ever be, wanted to give it a chance. I'm talking about The Silmarillion, the letters, unfinished tales, etc. The man has read them all many, many times. He's a smart as hell dude. Now what on God's green earth compelled him to want to give it a try? I don't know man, out of principle, I guess. I told him it looked horrible, but he wanted to see it for himself. Maybe he wanted to form his own opinion about it. After watching one episode (in his room, because I didn't want anything to do with it), he emerged from it with a thousand yard stare, absolutely distraught and in shock, sitting mostly quietly in the living room, with the occasional "what the fuck" here and there. I felt kinda bad for laughing at that moment, lol. Motherfucker looked like he had just seen a ghost or some shit, something unholy and and blasphemous and eldritch not meant for human eyes 😅 But he did confirm my suspicions on the show: it was an abomination. He made it to episode 2 or 3 (can't remember) before rage-quitting it. At that point, he was just pissed. Should've never even started it in the first place.

Thank you! Yeah I watched a ton of reviews along with my own and noticed a lot of people just focused on it "being woke", "bad casting" or just repeating themselves saying "it's not Tolkien" without pointing out what exactly is wrong. I tried to go with my own style and especially the scores at the end is an element I wished more channels would include in their reviews. I've often watched a show and felt parts of it was good, but that a specific element really made the show worse (bad acting, bad dialogue, weak storytelling etc.). It felt important to me to distinct lore from other elements of film-making at least.

The easiest metric I've found to measure the viewer enjoying the RoP is this: The more you know about Tolkien's world (read LOTR, The Silmarillion and at least The Book of Lost Tales Vol 1 and 2) the less you enjoy RoP. The less you know about Tolkien's world (never read the books, only saw the movies, or neither), the more you'll enjoy RoP. There are exceptions due to social and political agendas, but the Venn diagram of the two groups don't converge very much.

Had a comment up earlier, dont know what happened to it... Oh well... Nice Vid Council ... I watched the whole show... and unless amazon prices me out, will probably watch season 2. The Issue with RoP was the producers trying to do too much. The time compression killed any semblance of truth in the "back to the book" statement they tried to feed us early on. It was very disappointing and very disheartening to read see and hear so many in the Tolkien sphere stand up and say that the series was in good hands... when it should have been obvious that it wasnt. The story JRRT lays out, even in the appendices forms the frame work for any story you would want to tell. Story provides the frame work, the characters & their development fill the frame work, and both elements push the plot lines forward. But that never happened. There were multiple stunted story lines that they followed in S1. The Elf maiden with and incurable case of PMS, Elrond with a pompadour who apparently likes to wear drapes... his dwarven buddy who's so hormonal that he cries over a missed wedding... which ties into Celebrimbor the Aged, who happens to be the most renown elven smith since his grandfather, but needs to be taught about alloys by some chucklehead who happens to be a malevolent Maia... etc etc This could have been so much better... could have told the same story, via flash backs to different times, places, peoples... finally culminating the series with the reveal of the one ring... but no, instead we get a big pile of blah... which is the worst sin imaginable...

There's so much to say but i'll just talk about one aspect. The scope. For a serie with so much money I don't understand the scope choices. For all I know there's just about 200 persons living in middle earth eating dirt and smelling like poo. Same thing in Numenor? except some CGI shots all we see is a couple of random place with ordinary dudes here and there that look grumpy and stupid most of the time. Is Numemor a fancy village of 100 persons now?. So all the politics and plot twists and harsh decision feel very much lighter than it should be. The baaadd, very bad scope push me out of the show. The casual may find it more interesting that way but not me.

Inaccuracy wouldn't be a problem on it's own. The bigger problem is it was just absolutely terrible.

The only thing I liked was Bear McCreary's soundtrack (Ex. Sauron, Kazad-Dum, and Numenor).

Who cares about Amazon's season 2 when we have Council of the Rings' 2nd age season 2 to look forward to?

I knew we are in for a rough ride when I saw the photos of elves with short hair.

Hair has often been symbolic of great, spiritual strength. This is not a surprising move. It is a message that the good within the stories is going a different direction.

Even if they had f*cked up the lore they still didnt know how to make a fun show. There was nothing that i enjoyed about it.

I'm sorry, if any Tolkien channel played softball with this terrible series they lost my respect immediately. The things they do to Galadriel and Tolkien's world in general is so disrespectful and egregious it needs to be said.

Aye! The other day there was a big RoP-Galadriel fan on X (Twitter). I just couldn't stand it and had to reply hahaha

Your reviews of season one were very good, best by far of the many Chanel’s reviewing this series. Love the fact checks, considered analysis and comments. Well done. Honestly, I think this debacle is due to the people and culture of the writers and producers….all looking to be popular, edgy and funny, in their own way. The result is a very poorly assembled show, with disgraceful effort on dialogue, costumes, and pace. The obvious deviations from established Tolkien lore became irritating and disrespectful, again, I think due to the lazy and feel-good culture of the production staff. Altogether, an opportunity wasted, and a worthless show. Enjoy your videos, please keep going.

Y'know something went wrong when a frickin' Marvel looking D&D movie turns out more Faithful than a Tolkien TV show. As this stands ROP can only be enjoyed as an so Bad it's so Good 'Laugh at the Memes' show. (I just hope Dragon Lance is better!)

It was such a disappointment. No understanding of the source material, awful writing, the reliance on happenstance and illogically character choices. I hate watched the first series. I'm not touching the second one.

The ONLY redemption I see a season two RoP having is if they pulled a "it was all just a dream" trope with Galadriel waking up at the beginning of the first episode gasping and clutching her chest. Celeborn (laying next to her in bed) would awake and ask "What is wrong beloved?" And Galadriel would have a thousand mile stare toward the end of the bed and say "I just had the most horrible of dreams. You were not with me. A random man turned out to be Sauron and the world was completely wrong...." Then she walks over to the window overlooking Lindon. "Completely wrong..."
@gerisaccomanno7422 Жыл бұрын
That still wouldn't work because she would have dreamt of the rings and would know something was wrong when Annatar and Celebrimbor start making them; it would have to be Sauron waking up in a blind panic from a nightmare about some ghastly uber-Karen, however that's where he gets the idea of making rings.
@swordmonkey6635 Жыл бұрын
@@gerisaccomanno7422 Nah, like any dream, she'd forget the details soon enough and just keep a sneaking suspicion of anyone wanting to show elves jewelry crafting. lol It was also backstop the fact she never did completely trusted Annatar in the books.

Iirc Amazon made a deal to produce 5 seasons of the Rings of Power so pretty sure we will get more. -____- One of my friends proved he knows very little of Tolkien-lore when he said he liked the show more than he disliked it. :D

Who did Amazon make a deal with?
@RandomIdiotGS Жыл бұрын
Let's face it, absolutely nobody out there believed for a second that the Rings of Power could be good and that they would not end up ruining the lore. Or end up with horrible, horrible casting. Of course it was a bit surprising to see all the glowing reviews come out, but then again it wasn't. Because, oh yes: paid reviews as usual. What a surprise. Why deliver honest criticism when you can get paid royalties so other fools will buy for the product that gets you paid royalties, hmm? And why write and film something good by understanding the mindset of the single author of a story like Tolkien and putting effort into doing something with that, when you can just slap the LotR brand on some random BS you thought of in five seconds to automatically start making money of an existing fan community.
@colinharbinson8284 Жыл бұрын
They chose Tolkien's stories because of his huge fan base, and then corrupted it, why on Middle Earth did they think that would work?..

I didn't watch RoP, just the videos about it on your channel. And these videos affirmed the impression I got from the marketing campaign. RoP was a macabre display of current day mental illnesses that devour the entertainment industry.
