So Tolkien loved mythology, but when he looked into the mythology of his people he found it utterly lacking. What did he do? Did he say "I really like Greek mythology but I don't quite see myself in it. Let's make it 'better' and self insert"? No he created a masterpiece, something new and beautiful. If people want to see themselves in stories, or want stories that put forth certain allegories then let them follow his example and make something new.

Last year with no place left to turn I prayed to God in repentance then begged for help with all my heart, "I was until then a lifelong Atheist." I then had a dream of Jesus coming before God and he spoke of the Tabernacle in perfect context, "A word I didn't know existed because I've never read the bible", and the love I felt from Jesus was unlike anything I've ever felt before - A lifetime of joy every second - It brought me to sobbing and it changed my life forever. I've had other miracles since, a few being a light turning on in answer to deeply needful prayer 6 times, seeing a orb of light hours before a major surgery, seeing an Angel in a dream the night my mother prayed for me to see one, "Without telling me", and so much more. Know that God and Jesus ARE real and that they love us deeply. Let go of your hatred and Imagine yourself holding the people who've hurt you. Tell them you love and forgive them and I believe we should do our best to follow, "I've failed many times", the 10 commandments. Always have hope. I believe that love is the answer.

The thing is with Amazon, a dose of humility could really go a long way. You know, Tom Cruise when on the marketing trail for Top Gun: Maverick repeatedly said that he made the movie solely to entertain the fans, and that he was grateful to the fans. When the initial Sonic the Hedgehog movie was poorly received, the director acknowledged it and tried to fix it, and the movie went over much better with the audiences than it would have otherwise. If the actors and showrunners had been a bit more humble in their marketing, people might be more receptive. But then, if they had any humility in them, they probably would have made a better show in the first place.

The activists attempting to desecrate Tolkien's work through Amazon, do not believe it's possible to redeem yourself by righting your wrongs. The entire concept of succeeding by overcoming failures and setbacks is _fundamentally alien_ to their view of the world. To them admitting fault is admitting defeat - because by their logic, giving in would mean that the fans have more power to dictate the truth than they do. Humility isn't even in their dictionary.

I first tried reading the Lord of the Rings when I was 12 years old. It was too difficult for me and I didn't get past the first chapter. I tried again when I was 15 years old. Peter Jackson's "The Two Towers" movie had just come out. I was able to finish the books just a few months before "The Return of the King" came out in theaters. I noticed several differences between the books and the movies, but I was understanding of why they left certain things out, and it was still glorious to watch. The amount of love, care, and respect that went into those 3 films made it a pillar of modern cinema. This is not the same.

I made the same journey as you. I did make it through all the books at 11 but didn't like them. Decided to reread the books when people started talking about the films (before they got released) and loved them even though the translations aren't very good (even Tolkien hated the Swedish translation - the first one was/is awful). The movies are great adaptions and the changes they made are fully understandable. The films showed the respect everyone involved in their creation had for the canon, and therefor they were so lovely and great to watch.

@@Elora445 I read the English version when I was 14 or something. Didn't much care for the Swedish translation. The films are good because Jackson and the rest of them wanted them to be good more than they wanted to earn a lot of money from them. Even the investors, who did primarily want money from it, knew that if they made what the fans truly wanted they would earn a lot of money. The changes Jackson made were to improve the story as much as he could to fit the new medium, and not to push some political agenda or win social points.

My thinking about the music used in the last trailer runs along two lines: 1: I wouldn't mind listening to that piece if it popped up on one of my KZbin Premium music playlists. It sounds like some kind of celtic trance mashup: the artists would be called something like Miyoki & Malachor Nu-Melt Soundsystem. I could groove to it for a while. 2: If God dumped a billion dollars on my head and said "sweetie, adapt me some Tolkien, would ya? It's been a minute up here"... ...I might make different musical choices.

This crown in universe was inspired by a Numenorean helmet worn by royalty which had no wings, and so just looked like an egyptian crown. The "Why do you care?" line reminded me of an exchange in R.A. Salvatore's novel _The Crystal Shard,_ where a jaded, frustrated dwarf fighter asked a goodly dark elf ranger why the elf kept striving for the welfare of nearby human townsfolk. Though he never hurt anyone who didn't deserve it (and often not even then), the dark elf or drow, Drizzt Do'Urden, kept intercepting and eliminating dangers on the townsfolk's behalf. Most recently, though, he had warned them of their complacency and lack of preparation for a danger bigger than himself. But his warnings and observations fell on deaf ears. He was not one of them. *“No,” growled the dwarf. “We’ll fight beside [the human fishermen] if they choose to stand together[...]. Go to them, if ye wish, an’ good luck to ye, but [ask] nothing o’ the dwarves. Let us see what grit an’ guts the fisherfolk can muster.”* *Drizzt smiled at the irony of Bruenor’s refusal. Both of them knew well that the drow was not trusted, not even openly welcomed, in any of the towns[...]. Bruenor marked the drow’s look, and it pained him as it pained Drizzt, though the elf stoically pretended otherwise.* *“They owe ye more than they’ll ever know,” Bruenor stated flatly, turning a sympathetic eye on his friend.* *“They owe me nothing!”* *Bruenor shook his head. “Why do ye care?” he growled. “Ever yer watchin’ over the folk that show ye no good will. What do ye owe to them?”* *Drizzt shrugged, hard-pressed to find an answer. Bruenor was right. When the drow had first come to this land [...] only one [...] had shown him any friendship at all [...].* *“I do not know why I care,” Drizzt answered honestly. His eyes turned back to his ancient homeland where loyalty was merely a device to gain an advantage over a common foe. “Perhaps I care because I strive to be different from my people,” he said, as much to himself as to Bruenor. “Perhaps I care because I am different from my people[...] …that is my hope at least. I care because I have to care about something. You are not so different, Bruenor Battlehammer. We care lest our own lives be empty.”* *Bruenor cocked a curious eye.* *“You can deny your feelings for the people of Ten-Towns to me, but not to yourself.”* [...] *But the drow didn’t press the issue any further.* *So the friends watched in silence as the lights of [the nearest town] went down, one by one.* *Despite his outward callousness, Bruenor realized how true some of the drow’s accusations had rung; he had come to care for the people who had settled on the banks of the three lakes. This kinda shit is WHY gatekeeping is not only good, but NEEDED! Its not about stopping someone from liking something and excluding them from being part of its community. Its about stopping someone who DOESN'T like that thing and wants it and the community to change for them, whilst also trying to exclude long time people within the community who don't agree. Gatekeeping isn't about keeping FANS out, its about keeping non-fans out.

This makes no sense. You were once a non fan. Who suddenly made you the arbiter of what a fan should be? Granted I’m not defending what Amazon is doing to the LOTR, but to be a gate keeper is to also take a privileged stance on a topic you once were a new comer to. It’s arrogant.

@@RainMakeR_Workshop It's not that I don't understand, I'm just calling out the fault in the logic. You do not get to suddenly be the judge on who should and should not be a fan, as you were once yourself an outsider to that fanbase. Also, I'm just going to add while I agree Amazon is butchering the IP, if the fanbase is in agreement then just don't watch the show and leave a negative review. Corporations only respond to money and engagement. If the merch doesn't sell, the ratings are low and reviews tank the show, they may try for one more season then give up. You don't have to be a pompous ass about it and tell people that they don't deserve to be a fan because you said so. And If you are outnumbered by those who like the woke version of LOTR, and the ratings and engagement stay up then it doesn't matter how many people you deem "fake fans" that you gatekeep, Amazon will just have it's way. The world and society changes. It is what it is. My personal favorite fantasy series is The Elder Scrolls, you won't see me telling people they aren't allowed to be a fan of the series, even if their opinions are whack, because I can humble myself and realize that I am not the end all be all for an IP. Neither are you.

@@Brokenlance You clearly don’t understand. As you seem to think gatekeeping is intended to prevent discovery or enjoyment. It is not. It’s impossible to stop someone picking up a hobby, book, show, movie, game or anything else that might have a fandom and stop them from liking it. Frankly the fact you don’t see that extremely obvious fact without my spelling it out, says you’re either unable to see blatant implicit meaning, insincere, incendiary or any combination of the three. Gatekeeping is about keeping troublemakers out of the community that seek to either tear down that community, or force unwelcome change on the product which the community is built around. It doesn’t prevent someone being a fan. No gatekeeping, means people who want to destroy the things you love are given free reign to do so. So there is no flaw in my logic. The flaw is in your understanding of what you mistakenly think my logic is.

Preach, brother! So many amazing points in this video! I was originally excited for this show before anything substantial came out, but I will never watch it, mostly due to how the show runners have treated the fans. That’s the true difference between this show and the PJ movies, in my opinion. When pictures of Arwen in Helm’s Deep leaked before the PJ movies came out, the fans threw a justified fit. PJ’s team saw the uproar and rightly removed Arwen from the sequence. PJ respected the fans and realized his movies wouldn’t be a success without them. This show will not be a success without us, but they will lie through their teeth and never admit wrongdoing.

Not everything that looks beautiful or true turns out to be so. I've had some Amazon prime fans tell me that the Rings of Power looks beautiful and ask me why I don't think the same as they do. Because it's more than that, the story is just as important, as the stories that Tolkien wrote. It's fair to say it should be told in the way that he wrote it. I would be pissed if someone took my grandfather's work of art only to have it changed dramatically by others. If I'm honest it doesn't look that great either I can't get over the awful costume designs. I enjoyed three of your videos. What makes good costume designs, Aragorn's bow, and what makes good costume details. I feel like those that designed the costumes for The Rings Of Power should watch your videos because again those costumes are terrible, they don't look like they belong in that world.

I'm really sorry. I'm so sorry that I was one of the people who wanted to give the series a chance. For me personally, The Wheel of Time was the first thing I love that amazon prime defecated on. I wanted it to be good. I blamed the pandemic and wished for season two to be better. And when I saw and didn't like the trailers for the Rings of Power, I tried not to judge the show by it. You don't juge a book by it's cover, after all. I believe in second chances and I hoped that the criticism for wheel of time might have taugth them something. But boy, was I naive. I did watch the first two episodes of RoP and they were even worse than WoT. Thing is, I am an activist. I tell people that I want representation. But in the future, I have to specify: I absolutely don't want *this*. I want great books written by LGBTQ+ people, people of colour - and by straight white men. If someone has a great story to tell, I wanna know! I want more people to get to know amazing stories like Jordan Ifuekos Raybearer, because there are sooo many fantasy stories possible, based on other stuff than the european middle ages. I want to hear the stories of boys and girls, men and women and those who a neither of all skin colours, I want gay romances and asexual love stories. But I want it to be their stories, our stories. I don't want stuff just randomly crammed into stories where it doesn't belong for a cash grab or whatever the intention of this bullshit is. I sure as hell don't want amazon prime to fuck up all of these amazing stories and pretend it's a totally reasonable idea to f-ing swim from aman to middle earth. This is just stupid. Anyway, the fact that Tolkien didn't separate language and literature, in a way explains his writings . There's a poetry to his words and a magic in his stories that is uncommon. I easily confess that I never had any interest in watching Rings of Power. LOTR is just lovely as it is, and The Hobbit series made me realize the wariness that’s frankly needed when people decide to further adapt more of Tolkien’s work but then stretch it unnecessarily into a series - and now here we are with a full TV series that’s just mashed together a bunch of things from Tolkien’s writings! It’s enough for me to give Amazon’s series a side-eye for sure. Also, mostly a tangent: but I really adore that quote you used at the start from Tolkien, the one about learning language and grammar. I’ve recently decided to dive deeper into properly learning Old English, because it’s so fascinating, but my understanding of its grammar and conjugation rules is so weak and struggling that it’s been a bit disheartening, but that quote from Tolkien is very encouraging. A note on gatekeeping: I watched the LotR (extended edition) movies when I was in middle school. I watched them over and over and over again until I had them memorized. They were the most beautiful and inspiring movies I'd ever seen. However, there were many people who said I wasn't a true LotR fan beause I'd never read the books. They intimidated me: one of my friends read the first one and said it waa horrifically boring. But I really didn't like being told that I wasn't a true LotR fan because I hadn't read the books. Finally, when I graduated high school, I read the books, and loved them. The language was beautiful, it was like reading a painting. I loved it. And I was happy because no one could tell me I wasn't a true fan anymore. When we gatekeep, we state that people can't join the community of true lovers of that thing unless they meet certain criteria. If the people who don't meet those criteria actually do love that thing, they will do whatever it takes to meet that criteria and be permitted to pass through the gates and join the community of fellow fans; as I did with LotR and Tolkein. If they don't have actual love in their hearts for the IP, they will simply whine about being excluded. This I think is one of the merits of gatekeeping. We don't share that which is precious to us with just anyone; we share it only with those who will treat it with proper respect. This is the meaning and importance of gatekeeping.

From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Thank you for saying everything so honestly, but also eloquently. Thank you for displaying our love for Tolkien so accurately and passionately. Thank you for addressing so many topics and issues with Amazon’s “adaptation”. I like your “Tolkien voice” reading the quotes. Hehe. Amazon’s marketing campaign and their behaviour towards the fandom is appalling. Their manipulation via the corporate media is what infuriates me most. They are always either misquoting and misrepresenting Tolkien or are directly insulting him and his work and trying to undo what he created. When we have very valid criticisms regarding the show not actually having access to the source material to create the show, time period, disregarding lore, characters, visuals, music, history etc. they simply play their “special” cards and call us all sorts of -ists and -phobes. Which in not the case. This isn’t a modern story. It should not resemble our current world. It is simply about what makes sense for tolkien’s legendarium. A number of women, people of colour, the lgbt community and people with disabilities have come forward to say they don’t agree with what Amazon is doing. They don’t want to be represented just for the sake of ticking a box. The actors/activists disregard them and keep on singing the same old tune while promoting this. It is sad how Amazon has corrupted some “fan clubs” and “scholars” to try and convince everyone to praise the show. They want us to feel like we are losing a battle, that we are a only a hand full of grumpy purists that are outraged for no reason. They want us to doubt ourselves and our values. They want the fans to be divided. Why, I do not understand exactly… considering the massive fanbase of Tolkien and Peter Jackson’s movies they would have instantly won over if they just stuck with what Tolkien wrote instead of “reinterpreting” it. But it has to do with control and power. If they have to burn a billion dollars to accomplish their goal of getting “the message” out, or whatever else their plan is, they will. If you can vandalise one of the most iconic and best selling literary works of all time, then what else is left of culture and art? Nothing… This is not news, but taking on Tolkien was really bold on their side. There will be nothing to stop them from “correcting” other stories if they succeed. How far until they completely erase all cultures, traditions and history itself. There won’t be true diversity. Only blind global consumerism. If you are wondering, I am not British or American. I am from South Africa, the county where Tolkien was born. I am obviously aware of apartheid and the wrongs of the past. Unfortunately, I can also say that the way Amazon is trying to “rectify” Tolkien’s “problematic writing” (which in itself is a very false assumptions by Amazon’s Tolkien “scholars”) will only do more harm than good. The thing is, true Tolkiens fans see through this. It goes against all principles and themes in his books. The dislikes on their trailers clearly show it (I wish everyone could see it), as well as all the comments and reaction videos. We are the majority!!! Don’t be fooled by those “news” articles. They are paid mouthpieces. It is just sad that Amazon won’t be giving accurate figures of their viewership. They already decided they are going to rig this. They will call it a success no matter how bad it fails. Their future depends on it. They want a monopoly, not just in entertainment, but all sectors. Look up all the companies they and Bezos owns. I think that the section about “What do we do?” is excellent advice. We have to show other people the true magnificence of Tolkien’s work. His work of art. We have to keep reminding ourselves of it and not lose our love for Middle Earth in the midst of this battle. We have to keep it alive. Rings of Power will not tarnish Tolkien’s legacy. It will not stand the test of time. Even if it turns out to be a decent or good show (I am sure a billion dollars can get you somewhere), I don’t think they deserve success with how they hardled the whole situation and unethical tactics. Perhaps someday we can see the tales in the Silmarillion done justice by the actual fandom. There is obviously still a great demand for it. Once again, thanks for making this video. I really appreciate it.

Thank you, my friend, and greetings to South Africa, from the United States. I would say, perhaps part of the goal is this. If we cannot even defend a fair story, a fantasy that we enjoy, then how on earth could we defend our actual society. You are more then right, in all your well spoken words, even if we were to assume the intentions of this were good (which I don't) it will do more harm than good. And given that the ends are negative, no matter the spin, I believe, that at least in the case of some of those involved, it is intentional.

I have seen them ruin the beloved places I called home. Captain Picard and his crew were those I looked up to, hope for a better future and feel more accepted for being different as characters such as Data & Worff often spoke to me, where Picard functioned as a sort of mentor figure. Gandalf was very much the same. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings gave me hope despite fearing what was to come or feeling worthless in a society that pushed us nerds and geeks aside. Doctor Who challenged what I thought, putting an emphasis on doing the right thing and fighting for what you believed in. Farscape, Babylon 5, you name them. The more I read Tolkien's words, the more often I rewatch the movies, the more I fall in love with it all over again. I am at this point that I will no longer accept the corruption of what I love. I despise what Amazon and Hollywood have done to the fandoms I loved and I watched as they were butchered upon the altar of 'diversity', weeping afterwards as we were left to pick up the shattered remains. I am not going to pick up anymore... I will hold the line or die trying. Time to pull a Fingolfin my fellow brothers and sisters. Time to ride up to the Gates of Amazon and call them out for being Craven. If we don't stand now then when?

Honestly, when it comes to pushing diversity, I think Star Trek is actually a good fit for that. It was a notable message in the original series, so I don't think modernising that is in itself bad. However, the problem most creators have when pushing an agenda like diversity is that they're not actually pushing for diversity - they're virtue signaling for the purpose of cashing in on a popular franchise. They're also often doing it by pushing others down, which is the opposite of diversity.

I'm not a 100% book purist, which is why I adore good adaptations of classic books from Jane Austen and Tolkien ...but the core must be there: the themes, the characterization, the spirit of the work, the world it inhabits, and the general shape of the plot. If changes are made, the viewers should understand why they were cut or added for film. I can generally forgive a few bad costumes or fakey greenscreen... That is why sometimes I find critiques can be too nitpicky and tedious. This is not one of those... This is spot on. This is about a corporatized, political perversion and subversion of the professor's works in the name of ideology. On the outside it seems silly to think it matters what fictional characters do, say, or look like... but considering the detail and care put into Arda and the deeper still impact of Eru Ilúvatar's themes.... this is the work of Melkor. Edit: the last two minutes or so have left me crying 😢 😭 🤧

Not really any hope honestly, the Tolkien estate (see; spoiled rich kid brats) will sell out the rights as they need more money. Amazon doesn't care, it's not about producing a profitable product, they can just write off losses in their taxes. It's about having the rights, the control and power along with demoralising people who enjoyed a specifically European centred story.

@@spilchsaysstuff1427 He did indeed dislike them for similar reasons to what you have stated. However the majority of fans received them positively, because they captured the FEEL of Tolkien's work. I personally think they also captured the written work fairly well, cutting out some less relevant chapters and chopping and changing dialogue to fit the film medium is hardly a grievous sin. It would be hard to make the movies truly worthy and epic if you just copy and pasted Tolkien's somewhat dry battle segments into film medium (the silly action film criticism). Even if you did not like the Peter Jackson movies you have to admit they are night and fucking day compared to what Amazon is shitting out.

Every time I watch you speak on this, I am further impressed, inspired and infused with renewed hope. I was beginning to doubt my own position after being told in video after video by would-be professionals, activist actors, and show runners at Amazon how much we are all bigots if we don't agree with their abominable creation. I am grateful for your use of language in this. Even the length and detail of your stated position is fully justified and needed. It is a complex issue to convey to those not fully educated in the lore of Middle-Earth. A simple, "Elves aren't black" doesn't fully speak to the greater issues and too often seems to fuel the false narrative of who Tolkien fans are. Any true student of Tolkien's work knows he was far ahead of his time in his views. He was quite progressive for a man of the early 20th century. Those who have only glanced at his work through the lens of films, or listened to the rhetoric of those who are blind to Tolkien's actual words, see only the surface, thus drawing inaccurate conclusions. Your video was not full of rancor, but full of facts and sensibilities that has regrettably gotten lost in the greater argument out there in the ether of the internet. I feel like anyone on the fence should be sent a link to this video. It is better explained than I would be able to communicate. I too often allow my deep disappointment in what I'm seeing in this Amazon show cloud my better judgement. You have my gratitude. ⛵

What's funny is that the same passion for respecting Tolkien has been shown in Lotro (Lord of the Rings Online). There is a reason why they're able to survive for such a long time. They gained the respect of the Fandom. Hell, I spoke to one of the writers for Lotro on a livestream, voicing how Amazon is not only insulting Tolkien and the fans, but they are also devaluing the hard work that the writers of this game go through to make sure the stories in the game, though unique, are respectful to Tolkien's vision. They even have the most accurate look for zones stated in the books down to the most minimal detail. If your character Goss to the Lonelands, you can see the giant tower of Amon Sul's scale and be in awe at how it would've looked in its former glory. That's just one of many examples that adaptations of Tolkien's legendarium are possible. It takes alot of work but I can be done with enough passion and respect. Your channel and many others inspired me and many fans to come out of the shadows and create channels of our own to protest publicly to this outrage. Fun question: has anyone seen Anarion yet in the show?

What has been bad, so far, (and it is very, very bad) has been all of the publicity: the teasers, the trailers, the interviews. Compare these to the ones for Peter Jackson's films or, more recently, 'The House of Dragons' and the difference is clear. There has been nothing revealed that would reassure those of us who deeply love Tolkien's legendarium. Those involved in this show say they want it to reflect the modern world, but it only reflects their world and their egos. As a representation of Tolkien's world, it is simply a falsehood. Thank you for keeping up this fight.
