Why is no reviewer talking about how Goldberry was speaking in Tom’s cabin and singing back to Tom, (her name was used in the subtitles for when she was speaking too) but then when not-Gandalf asks about her Tom is cagey and denies it. Sure you could make the excuse that he’s protecting her, but Goldberry is just as into her own world as Tom is, she’s a Demi-spirit too. There’s no need to portray Tom as some cagey hermit, wary of the outside world… It’s the same thing as keeping Galadriel’s husband Celeborn out of the whole story because they selfishly wanted dramatic tension between good and evil and did not trust Tolkiens work to stand on its own. In both, it’s yet again Hollywood afraid to portray healthy, loving relationships that aren’t without conflict or drama or some kind of toxicity. It’s such a borning meta-modern trope. 🤮

Adding Elves at Helm’s Deep demonstrates Jackson’s *contempt* for the book. It’s a major point in the book: the Elves are abandoning Middle-Earth, leaving it to the Men. The battle of the Hornburg and the battle of the Pelennor Fields are primarily won due to the courage and strength of Men.

About the Diverse Elves at 1:40: The writers think it's an injustice if the various regions of the world are not all "represented" in this English tale. But I think it's an injustice that they're filming an English tale and ignoring the legends of the rest of the world. Like, they're waltzing into Japan which is up to its ears in ancient literature, and they're saying "Watch this Western story, we put an Asian guy in it" Now, you could reply to me "Nothing's wrong with that, everybody can enjoy a good story regardless of racial background....." ....which is true.... ...but you just made a case for NOT inserting the Asian guy.
@farfaraway42852 ай бұрын

@MaryRohwer2 ай бұрын
It's not entirely true that Tom Bombadil didn't care anything about the outside world. At Frodo's time he was living as a recluse with Goldberry, but he was aware of the people of the world. He knew that the Men of Westernesse had made the knives the hobbits took from the barrows, he knew that the Rangers descended from these men and protected folks though they were unaware of it, and he remembered the woman who originally owned the brooch he was going to give Goldberry.
@almitrahopkins18732 ай бұрын
Tom Bombadil is the embodiment of the impartiality of nature. Nothing made by the elves matters to him, because it can’t affect him. Even Peter Jackson left him out of the films because he represents the most depressing and uplifting message in all of the Lord of the Rings, which is no matter what you do, nature will eventually reclaim everything. You meet him in the books in the barrows where a long-dead empire buried their dead. The barrow-wights cannot bother him because he is the very nature that destroys the barrows and erases them from living memory. To put it in a context that is easier to understand and more current, think of global warming. Leaving it unchecked will destroy human civilization as you know it, but it won’t end all life on the Earth. Algal blooms survive rather well and even thrive under the conditions that could kill people off entirely in a few hundred years. Tom Bombadil is like that, a merry dance of life that erases and forgets all things eventually. Nothing you can do affects him, so nothing you can do bothers him. Your concerns are not his concerns, so that is why the One Ring couldn’t be left to his guardianship. He would simply set it down somewhere and forget about it, even as the Nazgûl arrive to reclaim it. The Nazgûl do not bother him either, because in time, they will fade away to nothing as well. Tom Bombadil is the personification of the knowledge attained by a man who fought in a war. It’s the nihilism of knowing that nothing you have done or can do will affect time. He is like the flowers growing over a battlefield where the bodies of the dead were left to rot. If you know the origin of the character, you know that it was one of his children’s toys that he wove into the stories he told to them. As they grew up, they abandoned their toys, but in the stories, they still persist. Tom Bombadil was the origin of everything Tolkien wrote, so he had to be included as the eldest in the Lord of the Rings as well. Tom Bombadil is like Puck’s address to the audience at the end of Midsummer Night’s Dream. He reminds you that it is all a fiction. None of it is real except the lessons you take away from it, so don’t be bothered by it. I wouldn’t be surprised if Tolkien included old Tom as a subtle jab at CS Lewis, who likely didn’t catch it. I studied theology, so that may flavor my take on it. Tolkien based the Lord of the Rings on the Kalevala, so I’m likely not wrong in my interpretation. As far as the Rings of Power including Tom Bombadil, it is painfully obvious that the writers didn’t comprehend the source material. Old Tom is the specter of death, but he is the friendly death, not the scary death. He is the inevitable that you shouldn’t fear, because he is an old friend who will welcome you warmly, rather than the Grim Reaper, who will hunt you down, callously and coldly. He is the mischievous death, rather than the malicious death, drawing on the folklore of the shidhe. I hate it when modern writers take the name of beloved and revered characters because they are popular and then ignore everything written before. Hopefully this suffers the same fate as the Acolyte.

In LOTR, Tom Bombadil is the Edenic Adam. He was not born naturally, he does not age or suffer illness, he lives with a lovely woman in a garden over which he has total dominion and expresses no desire to leave and feels no angst about what is going on outside his little area.

"One wig to deceive them all." "That is not how the rings work." -Tolkien's Galadriel could wipe out 500 orcs with a swap of her hand due to her being a most powerful elf mage. -Amazon's Guyladriel can't even give Númenóreans a lesson in swordplay or combat. Amazon really knows how to make a complete ass of itself.

That’s not how magic works in Tolkien’s world.
@Mahtijanis2 ай бұрын
Power doesn’t work in this way in Tolkien’s works, it’s not your typical fantasy setting where power levels are fixed and the heroes are capable of super hero feats and killing hundreds of foes on their own. Galadriel truly was powerful but she couldn’t have fought 500 orcs alone, rather her power was of the kind that those orcs wouldn’t have -dared- lay their hands on her (though I’d say she would probably have been murdered anyway). Power and magic are very subtle and secretive forces in this world. You should compare it to other mythologies and it’ll make more sense: Zeus’s adventures among humans, Odín being imprisoned by a regular guy somewhere, etc.
@JustTooDamnHonest2 ай бұрын
@@Mahtijanis Actually Galadriel in Tolkien's world is that powerful. But her true power lies in her cunning especially when it comes to politics. But her magical power is that high for she is one of the most powerful mages in Tolkien's world and it was so terrifying that no orc or even Sauron for a time wouldn't dare cross her.
@Mahtijanis2 ай бұрын
@@JustTooDamnHonestno. There is no such example anywhere in Tolkiens works. Not one hero depicted as single handedly slaying 500 orcs, and even less so with magic. Mithrandir did no such thing, Galadriel did no such thing, no one did such thing. Even when Fingolfin strode to meet Morgoth in one to one combat the orcs fled before him - he didn’t slay them and I don’t think anyone’s even suggesting that he could’ve.
@JustTooDamnHonest2 ай бұрын
@@Mahtijanis I have you ever heard of the term figure of speech? THAT IS WHAT I MEANT SINCE THE FIRST COMMENT!!!! I already knew that there was no mention of it in the books and there doesn't have to be for the fear alone is sometimes enough for evil to think twice before facing Galadriel. But her magical power is mentioned more then once in several books and it seems to tell us that her affinity for magic is very high considering who trained her in it. Plus I never mentioned Fingolfin and you just proved my point in terms of the fear alone of one single being for he didn't slay them and yet they were afraid of him and Gandalf, Galadriel and even Fingolfin are that feared by several factions that you it makes you wonder that maybe that they are that powerful and yet they do not need to show due to them running for their lives at the mere sight of them. Remember Gandalf feared the Balrog and those thing are called the Maiar of Fire and Gandalf barely defeated one and he came back more powerful then ever before.

One of the dumb things about this episode is that Galadriel travels through the exact location where Tom Bombadil is SUPPOSED to live, so if they really wanted to include him, they could have done so without breaking the lore, having to change his entire character and have him travel to distant lands all of a sudden. Galadriel could have met him at the exact same location the hobbits did.

Two decades have passed since I first read LOTR and delved deep into its mythology. What is embedded in my mind is Elves are fair-skinned, grey-eyed, majestically tall for most of their kin, with long locks of hair. I didn't get that from the movies; it's there in the appendices. So it's hard for me to accept this Amazon vandalisation.

Which is odd, right? They go out of their way to drive home and have Galadriel justify using or relying on Nenya even though she KNOWS Sauron wanted them to make it alongside the other two Elven Rings. Now, the Elven Rings have not been specifically stated as to what powers they give, but considering that Elves are already immortal it makes no sense for them to act like the Rings of Men, also because Sauron didn't make them himself directly meaning they are the least corrupting. They would have to give some kind of major power to justify the Elves even being interested in them. And we do know the Elven bearers did use their rings in different ways, so long as Sauron was not wearing The One. What better way to showcase why they would be so interested in keeping their Rings than to actually demonstrate the power they can give to their individual bearers? Not like this show has wasted many opportunities to girl-boss her anyway.

I recommend reading The Adventures of Tom Bombadil poem. Here is a small part of the poem : Old Tom Bombadil was a merry fellow; bright blue his jacket was and his boots were yellow, green were his girdle and his breeches all of leather; he wore in his tall hat a swan-wing feather. He lived up under Hill, where the Withywindle ran from a grassy well down into the dingle. ************************************************* Old Tom in summertime walked about the meadows gathering the buttercups, running after shadows, tickling the bumblebees that buzzed among the flowers, sitting by the waterside for hours upon hours. ************************************************* There his beard dangled long down into the water: up came Goldberry, the River-woman’s daughter; pulled Tom’s hanging hair. In he went a-wallowing under the water-lilies, bubbling and a-swallowing. ************************************************* ‘Hey, Tom Bombadil! Whither are you going?’ said fair Goldberry. ‘Bubbles you are blowing, frightening the finny fish and the brown water-rat, startling the dabchicks, and drowning your feather-hat!’ ************************************************* ‘You bring it back again, there’s a pretty maiden!’ said Tom Bombadil. ‘I do not care for wading. Go down! Sleep again where the pools are shady far below willow-roots, little water-lady!’ ************************************************* Back to her mother’s house in the deepest hollow swam young Goldberry. But Tom, he would not follow; on knotted willow-roots he sat in sunny weather, drying his yellow boots and his draggled feather.

as a kinda Tolkien nerd, this show is so off lore-wise also. don't know how much average viewers know, but the Istari (wizards) are not even supposed to be in middle earth at the period. Theyycamee inaboute 1000 years ago, where they are now. so the whole thing is kinda of off, and supposedly the stranger is "Gandalf" arriving in a comment???. and now there is an evil wizard?! I think there is no way they make it Saruman don't think they are even allowed to do that legally. but it could be the two blue wizards. little of them is known lore-wise only that they went to the east, at it might one of them be turned evil, but this is not confirmed. they have to go this way, even though the strangler says a lot of Gandalf quotes. they use random book quotes everywhere on the show.
@BartAllen2 ай бұрын
*Well technically the Blue Wizards were sent by Manwe to Rhun and Harad a little over 2,000 years before Gandalf, Radagast and Saruman are sent to the West of Endor -- though technically all 5 of the Istari are sent to Rhun during the First Age ~*
@reek40622 ай бұрын
I believe in some of Tolkien’s later writings the Blue Wizards arrived in Middle-Earth in the Second Age. If the stranger is one of them, he would be too similar to Gandalf though.
@petriew20182 ай бұрын
@@reek4062 no, in none of Tolkien's writing did that happen. The Wizards were sent to Middle Earth in response to Sauron's re-emergence after he was thought dead in the drowning of Numenor at the end of the second age. He never waved on that point. Why you believe such laughable nonsense is beyond me, maybe you should try reading Tolkien instead of reading opinions of tolkien from people who have never read him either.
@ayya88172 ай бұрын
think the blue wizards came in 1600 of the S.A after the creation of the one, as a response from the Valar. but where little is known about them, that's my whole point kinda. surely they don't just make it gandalf and saruman just because they are big names in the Main movies....(even tho they did it with the Hobbits for some reason) when you can add two new characters like the blue wizards. but they don't mention it, so idk how much lore they know not to even mention it. but the show sucks so who cares
@BartAllen2 ай бұрын
@@reek4062 *Yes, in HoME he also reveals that they spent time in Harad, too ~ They arrive in Endor when Glorfindel is sent back by Manwe ~ Technically, by the means of how the Istari clad themselves in the West according to Tolkien, the Blue Wizards would either be of swarthy/dark/sallow/black skin ~*
