I personnaly think that the writers would get them back together but wouldn't develope his character. The writers just kept him doing the most absurd things about him being a narcissistic man, and on the other ep he's bringing flowers and being the perfect bf. I hated that they were always breaking up - getting together, and Sonny always giving him a second chance, when he really doesn't deserved it. To me that's a toxic relatioship because he puts sonny in this emotional roller coaster. I'm so sad about it because Chad was my favourite character on this show but the writers ruined him.

Bridgit Mendler or some other actress should’ve been Sonny instead. She auditioned for the role but as we all know, Demi won the role. And I still think they should’ve turned it down. They knew what they were getting themselves into with their mental health problems AND substance abuse problems AND their music career AND the Camp Rock movies and they could’ve taken as long of a break in rehab as they needed instead of adding even more burden on themselves by taking the TITULAR LEAD ROLE IN A TV SERIES!!!! And we all know what happened; the show got cancelled because of them. One of the things I hate the most is when a single IP is ruined by a single person’s terrible decisions. And this was one of them. If this was one of the reasons why you or some people hate Sonny With a Chance or just don’t want to watch it, I completely get it. I liked the show for the good moments they had but it doesn’t make me any less sad about its’ cancellation. And Disney needs their own Quiet on Set installment.

I'm a little late but looking back on this now, I think Chad was really well written in that his idea of a romantic relationship was clearly heavily if not entirely informed by media representation of romance. Between his schmoozing/flirting, his extreme and ultimately fatal reliance on big romantic gestures over actual relationship development, and the way he seemed to fall in love more with the idea of Sunny than the reality of her as a person and a relationship with her, among other things, the way things went makes perfect sense. Like you said, he grew up in this Hollywood world, developed huge overconfidence as well as an obsession with image and publicity, and people don't change overnight, especially from their formative years.

The stunt double breakup always angered me because Chad really had grown and it was so obvious how much he cared for Sonny just for him to act so out of character for a stupid bit. If that episode didn't exist then I think their actual breakup would have worked better because I think they should eventually end up together but with the pretext of that second chance Sonny gave Chad that he really didnt deserve, it doesnt do much for either of their characters to end up together after another breakup. So I'm going to pretend that episode is not canon/doesn't exist and imagine that the real second chance happens sometime in a hypothetical season three and is done in a way that really shows why they are good together and that they have grown as characters to be whats best for one another

​@theroyalebunny8239 Tbh, the stuff he asked for was something season 1 Chad never would. Condor was more than happy to give Chad whatever he wanted as long as he wasn't overly greedy. Season 1 Chad knew there was a line not to be crossed. Season 2 Chad just felt like a dumb knockoff by doing something without thinking of the consequences, all because of bad cell reception when he couldn't hear Sonny clearly and took her advice the wrong way. Season 1 Chad was smarter and more like a Slytherin. He was ambitious and cunning, and always thought about his moves before he made them. In season 2, they made Chad seem unable to even live without help from Sonny which was just wrong. They made him seem more like an accessory to her rather than a person with his own mind and soul.

The only reason Chad asked for those things is because he found out Zac had them, but if he never had it then Chad wouldn’t have asked for it. Season 2 Chad is still Chad after all even though he had slight character development before it went to hell. Chad being Chad, he was going to do what he wanted anyways because it pissed him off that Zac had better stuff than him. It helped that Sonny wasn’t there to try and stop him but even if Sonny said not to do it he would probably scheme behind her back 😭

The writers probably did that on purpose before they knew the show would get cancelled because they had things in mind for his character later on but unfortunately Demi was going through terrible things so we never saw it happen. On top of Selena Gomez playing herself and acknowledging WOWP as a show, they also openly talk about Miley being Hannah Montana and it also being a show. looking back i think the biggest issue with the writing of their fights after they got together was that it was always chad who messed up. this made his character regress and turn into an inconsiderate oblivious jerk instead of the snarky charasmatic bastard he was in s1. on the other hand, sonny went from goofy bubbly new girl to saint ring leader who was annoyed and mad all the time. they could've explored the idea of their backgrounds coming between their relationships instead of whatever s2 was. chad's idea of romance comes from whatever he's seen in hollywood and ofcourse mckenzie falls so he goes big but messes up with small things and doesnt realize sonny isnt into those things. meanwhile sonny is from a small town and tho she's gotten used to the stardom, she prefers to keep her personal life private and likes more simple things when it comes to romance. so while dating she might get uncomfortable with how girls fawn over chad, and chad being chad, he relishes in it not noticing how it makes sonny feel coz to him all thats nit real sonny is. we could've had their fun banter fighting over what kinds of dates to go on and how much they wanna publisize their relationship. also!! instead of pitting the shows against each other they could've done a wacky crossover!!! which channy were over the moon about but the rest of the cast of bothel shows were salty with and channy could've had fun sches to make them bond!! ughh i wish we could have a redo of s2 or even correct what we had in a s3

God, I'll take this comment as my personal canon. 😍 This would have been sooo good! They should have written about their background differences, what did their families think about them dating? (it could have been that Chad's family was classist and/or elitist and weren't so sure about Chad dating someone like Sonny. I don't even remember if they ever showed something about Chad's family). They could also have showed how Sonny felt out of place in Chad's word and her being unsecure about the future of their relationship, all the while Chad could have acted as the supportive, caring boyfriend she needed, trying to prove to her, but in a honest way, that he really didn't care about such things; the pressures of being so famous at such a young age and add on top of that the romantic side of their relationship. I honestly think the part they got right was the competitive aspect of their relationship. I mean, they were young, and both had these big dreams of being recognized for their acting and being the best, but instead of pitying one against the other they could have written it as them finding a common ground, learning to coperate and subdue their selfishness and realizing there are much more important things in life than fame and hollywood success (because they cared about each other more than anything, because it was real and not something shallow and fleeting). I genuinely think that with another season or two we could have gotten to a point where Chad genuinely grew enough to be with her. I think while there may have been a few missteps from the writers, overall they were a really good couple (especially by Disney Channel standards). I think the biggest problem was definitely the Chaz episode. I would have liked it better if it had been less about Chad being selfish and more about the studio making Chaz stand in on dangerous dates to "preserve his camera-ready face". It could have been a conflict they fought to resolve together instead of making Chad backslide that far. And if the writers were REALLY desperate for conflict, I would have loved it if they had brought in Chad's parents and they thought she wasn't good enough for him. He could have defended her and proven that he's improved and gotten past most, if not all, of his self-obsession and narcissistic tendencies.

You weren't harsh! You took the content at face value which is good! Personally, I just think it all came down to how they were written. Chad in S1 was not as an asshole as he was in S2. I don't like that they made him act like he didn't care and didn't have a good side like he did in S1. It always felt a bit disconnected. I also found the forced fighting as just a way to make plots rather than focusing on the randoms doing random stuff again. There was nothing wrong as keeping them as a good non-toxic relationship but I guess that wasn't enough. The kiss episode rlly pissed me off I always felt bad that they felt pressured to do so. But since that didn't happen, it makes me so sad that they wrote that stupid stunt double plot, like there was no need for it to ruin their cute relationship. The tween choice plot makes way more sense, as it aligns with Chad's character. The stunt double plot would make more sense if instead Chad just kept ditching dates or canceling them at the last minute because he couldn't put himself in danger due to his Mackenzie Falls contract. But of course that's just regarding their relationship storyline, I understand this is a kid's sitcom, so this suggestion wouldn't be entertaining enough. Point is I'm forever heartbroken over channy but I'm running with that Calabasas endgame.

This ship was what got me into fanfiction as a kid, I was Hooked. The key for me was how Chad seems like he's losing control over his carefully curated image the whole time, like Sonny is just similar enough to him to make him feel comfortable while being different enough to pull him out of his shell. It's an incredibly endearing dynamic! Having Chad feel insecure and scramble back to his crueler persona once they start dating is disappointing, but in an uncomfortably realistic way. I wouldn't have minded if they stuck with a fluffier story about Sonny and Chad not only helping Chad work through his insecurities, but also have him learn about Sonny's passions and learn what kind of support she wanted from him. Sonny could still explore her jealousy and competitiveness, but since Chad knows those feelings so well he would be able to actually talk them through with her.

I LITERALLY just watched Sonny with a Chance for the first time literally this last week (didn't have cable as a kid and started to get out of the Disney loop more and more at around the time it aired) and my sister started watching it and put the first episode on and I got into it and THIS SHIP IS THE BEST I'VE SEEN IN SOOO LOOONG. The first date had me cackling like a lunatic when he threw up. The bit of them both being mental and him physically caving to the unease was so bad it was so good, comedically 😭

great analysis! i wasn't into a lot of disney shows as a kid, but when i started listening to Demi's music in my teens, i watched swac and i loved their relationship so much, especially in s1, but always felt that the actual relationship between them in s2 was missing something, and i think you addressed the issues here in the video better than i ever would. unfortunately we didn't had more seasons, but at least we had demi and sterling's headcanon to make up for it ❤

I think if the show had gotten a third season we would've gotten a Chad redemption arc and seen Sonny working on herself too, so when they got together it actually would've been a healthy relationship. I remember watching the episodes as a kid and I noticed there were red flags in their relationship from the beginning. I think Sterling Knight is a much nicer guy than Chad Dylan Cooper, so it was always genuine when he played nice Chad.
