Inafune made a good a point about being innovative and not becoming stagnant. However it was Capcom that moved too fast with his idea. But in the end Kenji was right. At the time Japanese games were indeed slowing dying and the western market was booming. By appealing to the western market is how games like Dead Rising came into existence. Capcom however instead decided to neglect it's Japanese devs and go all in on the western ones. Dead Rising 2 was perhaps a great example of a western Dev team keeping the spirit of the Japanese creators vision while adding their own into the mix. Dead Rising 3 was the result of the team throwing all that out and instead jumping on the gritty depressing realism that sadly plagued the ps3 and 360.

3 is hysterically underrated for no reason. That game _rocked._ I loved it. It still managed to be wonderfully goofy, but in a way that really charmed me _and_ made me care about the characters. I connected to Nick a lot - both because I’m adopted (Nick Ramos was an orphan) and “Nick” is a nickname of mine in real life. It felt real with the character interactions, but not like anything was forced or overly-stereotypical in a way that ruined the charm of the characters (which I feel happened to Vick in DR4, she just turned into an annoying and preachy teenage stereotype). Having so much time to explore a massive area that was still filled to the brim with zombies was awesome, and somehow made driving around the world feel really badass and hilarious while also being productive for my adventure. Plus, no more cancerous escort missions. Say what you want, you elitist DR1 cock-sucking fanboys - escort missions _SOULD NOT EXIST EVER._

@K W well in dead risings case you dont remove the aspect of the game that makes the game what it is. You take the core aspect of the product and you go look at the 3 or 4/5 star reviews and find out what would have made the product a 5 for those people. if it doesn't change the core of the product you can improve on it. using a knife as an example. if people complain that its not a fork... you ignore those people. if people say it could be sharper or it could use a serrated section you can listen to them.

It's a shame that Capcom had the mindset that their games being developed in Japan was a bad thing. What I loved about their games was how unapologetically "video gamey" they feel. An inhouse Japanese developed game, made for the western market never fail to entertain. I'm glad Capcom has largely embraced having all of their titles being made in Japan because their recent titles sure benefited from it.
@RocKM0014 жыл бұрын
To be perfectly fair you have to take this into context that the late 90's and early 00's was when western games (specially pc gaming) started to get really big and this was around the time video game outlets and magazines were going "Japanese game is dead long live western gaming!" seeing as Jp games felt "stale" and so forth.. so not exactly misguided thinking. Of course they went far too much the other way that they lost the reason why folks tended to buy "Jp" games.
@Rasengan9000ttt4 жыл бұрын
Now a days the reverse is happening. More people want Japanese games because of their minimum western influence. Western games try to hard to be politicaly correct. That's how I feel about Bethesda lately. Part of the fun of Fallout: New Vegas was seeing "quest failed" when you did certain things. Faction reputation, quest completion, NPC deaths, could all lock you out of certain quests and it made the game way more replayable. Fallout 4 doesn't really have much of that until you get to the "point of no return" faction war quests, but you're pretty much in the endgame by then. You're better off reloading an old save if you wanna go with a different faction instead of restarting, because almost all of the early game is exactly the same.

17:54 It's crazy how quickly the timer went from being at the core of the gameplay, to non-essential, to being removed entirely. Games are different from movies because they can push back. It's like taking the ghosts out of Pac Man. Taking a slow leisurely walk in a game not made for slow leisurely walks, wears you out very fast. There are no apparent prospects for picking up your controller a second time. They just kept getting signs that downplaying the time management element was bad, and they continued to keep pushing that way anyway.

Dead Rising 1 was a legendary masterpiece. It’s gameplay was perfect and it’s story was brilliant. It blended everything perfectly and created a memorable experience for anyone who played it. It was sad at the moments that counted, scary at the moments that were needed and comedy is a big risk in games, so what they did was genius. They made it so WE made our own comedy. Dead Rising 2 improved on some gameplay elements but the satisfaction of killing zombies slightly dwindled compared to the OG. Dead Rising 2 case west was brilliant because it added to Dead Rising 2 and gave us (my opinion) the greatest team up in video game history. Apart from Shepard and Garrus from the ME series. Dead Rising case zero was a nice little prequel but didn’t add a whole lot, it was still nice to have though. Dead Rising 2 off the record was an amazing spin off story which in my opinion, had better elements than Dead Rising 2. It also added probably the greatest feature to Dead Rising. Sandbox mode. Dead Rising 3 was very fun with its gameplay but story wise, and acting, it lacked severely. The satisfaction for killing zombies was ramped back up, not to the degree of Dead Rising 1 but in my opinion, the second most satisfying in the series. The main character, actually, pretty much all characters in Dead Rising 3 were very forgettable. The gameplay is what makes this one shine. Dead Rising 4 can suck a dick.

The mentality was not new. It came from Meiji Restoration era and reinforced further after Japan's defeat in WW2. The problem of getting input from an isolated 'professional' group of play-testers have been solved with insider-programs and public beta testing. A lot of the games from the late 2000s suffered from the input of testers that were constantly playtesting various games and had a stale outlook on new concepts.
@j.m.f54514 жыл бұрын
I hope Capcom takes the right lessons from Dead Rising 3 and 4's unpopularity. Play testing is not the end-all-be-all, sometimes the developer knows best. The limited clock and sequencing of events made 1 and 2 feel tense, and made the player feel a bit anxious when confronted with a mob of zombies. You had to consider how long it would take you to mow through them, plan ahead, consider alternate routes. When dealing with zombie games you have to limit the player somehow; either give them limited time, or limited resources. Resident Evil gives you limited resources, and almost unlimited time (save certain segments). Dead Rising gave you unlimited resources scattered all over, but limited time. Take away that time and all the tension is gone.

DR3 is criminally overlooked. It is easily the best in the series, a lot of people that took issue with the game done so out of the hate they had towards Microsoft and Xbox One. It caught an unfair amount of criticism such as it's 720p resolution (this was during 'resolutiongate'), while it's immense technical achievements (number of on-screen NPC all with detachable body parts, full dynamic lighting/time of day system, high level of physics and partical fx, plus almost every single building had it's own interior each one unique and hand-crafted) went ignored. There was tonnes of humour too, it was one of a few games that genuinely had be laughing throughout due to its witty and well acted voice work. It even got superb DLC in the form of Arcade Remix, an addictive game in it's own right built for replayability and packed full of Capcom fan service. Put simply, DR3 is a cult classic.

While i understand people don't like 3, it is by far the best title in the series for me and the first one to really grab my attention. I played 2 first but that game never rly clicked with me too well even tho it was still fun and Chuck Greene is a good protagonist. However, 3 to me felt like Capcom at its best and such a huge evolution from 2. Nick felt like a real person experiencing a zombie outbreak and the story as a whole was pretty damn compelling since it ties so heavily to the first game when it comes to the antagonists especially. Idk man, i see so many comments that Dead Rising 3 took the series downhill, but i didn't see it that way. That game will never become old for me and i think the series should've ended there. It was a satisfying conclusion to everything. I think we can all agree that 4 was jusf sort of underbaked trash and it completely makes the whole plot of DR3 pointless which kinda pisses me off but oh well :/

@@swinelias So much for Nick being the cure and adding a little bit more depth to Carlito for providing that cure even tho he wanted to ruin America with zombie outbreaks. DR4 basically renders the whole "cure" plot meaningless and it's one of the things that made Nick "special" aside from him being a mechanic. Also, him being a mechanic is literally the perfect tie in to the game's combo weapon system. I always thought that was a major upgrade from how tedious it felt to try to find a workbench so u can combo ur weapons. Anyway, the fourth installment really regressed in quality. It somehow looks worse than 3, it removed psychopaths, and its story is just trying to justify why it even exists in the first place

There's no shortage of games that feature zombies...but not a single one has gotten them right or portrayed them with their correct traits and attributes or established gameplay mechanics that reflect the classic and iconic "rules"...like only head shots kill them...they don't punch they grab and bite and they're dangerous because of numbers. Their collective weight and mass etc. It amazes me how so many people misunderstand the relatively simple concept of zombies.
