In 1989, young college graduate Jordan Mechner introduced a 2D platformer called Prince of Persia to the world. Platformers were all the rage during the 80s, yet Mechner’s set itself apart from its contemporaries with its weighty, swashbuckling action, and incredibly smooth animations - a feat that Mechner had achieved by rotoscoping his family and friends into sprites.
After a decade of enhanced ports and a strong sequel, the series would fall into an abyss following a misstep into the third dimension. Yet just when all seemed lost, Ubisoft’s young, Montreal-based studio would step in and transform the series into a modern classic, implementing a gameplay mechanic now as iconic as the franchise itself in the process.
Prince of Persia’s new heroes would continue to nurture it for many years after - until finally, after bringing it to the silver screen, the decision was made to put it on hold. The series’ spark had seemingly vanished - but the mark it had left on the industry and gamers worldwide would still remain.
This is the rise and fall of Prince of Persia.

WW went _way_ too far with the forced edginess. Shaddee's outfit (and the whole intro sequence with her) was just ridiculous. I was 16 when I played it so I guess I was part of the target demographic but I still found it to be blatantly in your face.

I know WW was trying to hard to be edgy and angsty, but I kind of forgive this as a product of its time. All in all, I still enjoy the game very much. The entire Sands Trilogy are some of my all time favorite games.

But, what's the point with looking good, when the game is boring? I cannot die in the 2008 game, every time I fall out of a cliff or didn't calculate the timing or the distance of any jump, there is the princess to save the character, that's stupid, condescending and lame; in the Sands of Time trilogy's I die countless of times until I learn where I shouldn't jump, glide or run, or how to suppose to do the tricks.

So many people concentrate on the "edgyness" of Warrior Within, and never mention its strenghts, like superb ambient music outside combat, or the atmosphere of isolation, that Metroid is so often praised for.

Combat system was one of the best ever. I've never found any other game that made me feel that powerful and unstoppable. IDK, people will tell me that the feeling of power exists in games in which you combat waves of enemies, but, not for me. It felt realist and you had control over your actions and choices. And moves were very cool to execute.

I'm actually glad Prince of Persia sort of died out, at least for now. They're some of my favorite games of all times and the Sands of Time trilogy was more than amazing. They were fun, they were challenging and they had stories. Can you say that for many modern games? The Prince was a great character that wasn't impossibly muscular, skillful or overly smart -- his main power was controlling time and being agile. We saw him evolve from a confused and cocky young man to a confident and strong protagonist. And controlling time was a great excuse as to why he was able to survive much of the games' events. I would rather have a memorable protagonist, two classic games and an amazing trilogy than a hundred mediocre games with little to no story focused on nothing but graphics, cheap multiplayer modes and gaining money. We all saw what happened to Call of Duty after the first few games. And it's almost what's happening to the Assassin's Creed franchise to a lesser degree. I'm glad Prince of Persia didn't end up just another cash cow. That's triple A industry for you.

I've always thought Warrior Within is a very underrated game. It has a killer art design, its environments have an amazing atmosphere, the soundtrack is awesome, it has a complex combat system and a cool story. I never understood why some people thought it was just an edgy spin-off.

@swamdono
@swamdono 5 жыл бұрын
Because it was. At the time, many games were going through the "Dark, edgy, more adult" sequels/reboots. Honestly though, I think it worked out for Warrior Within. That said, I'm not sure why people rave so hard about it's combat system. Having more moves wasn't bad, but the animations overall were clunky as hell. Even when compared to Sand of Time it was much less fluid, and judging the janky enemy/Prince movement was half the challenge. I don't just mean the combat animations either. Platforming animations often glitched out and sent the Prince to his death. It just didn't kill the game because of the time rewind mechanic. I don't know if that was a result of bad coding, or if it was rushed out and suffered less testing. I was younger then and didn't follow development as closely as I do today. The story and environments were top notch though, and I've played the game through a few times simply because of that.

You can't do that to the fans! That's how you murder your own game. 21:00 Warrior Within is definitely my favorite. There is replayability value (e.g. getting the Scorpion Swor and fighting Kaileena or getting the Water Sword and fightning the Dahaka). The gameplay is non linear, you visit the same parts of the map at different points in time and throughout the game play. The plot twist with the wraith character (I did not see that coming). And the Dahaka was flipping scary !! Ubisoft really managed to recreate the same kind of feelings I had when I watched Alien or Predator the first time. But aesthetically and as an experience overall, I kind of liked The Two Thrones better. It felt much more like a movie.

@@MitkoFilipov If u have water sword it's going to be a good ending. If not it's going to be a bad ending. And if u want to get the good ending you need to all life upgrade then the water sword will be on hall of the throne room (i think? I have played it like ages ago so i can't quite remember.) So, The sword determines the endings. If u get all the life upgrades, the water sword is unlocked. You can choose to not use the water sword if u want the see the prince vs empress final fight with all life upgrades.

Really amazing documentary, I'd like to say that what caught my interest into watching the whole thing was Prince of Persia was a part of my childhood as I was still getting into games on the PC and PS2 as a kid, I got a huge nostalgia for the game, I can still remember all the jumps I had to do and the puzzles and traps I had to pass, and it's sad how the game died and I didn't know that Assassin's Creed was the next step for the game even though I always linked both together. Any true gamer must have played this game at least once in their life..

The Sands of Time is much better than Warrior Within. The first one is an artistic videogame, the latter is just a comercial product with a simple plot. There is a reason why professional critics sites like IGN and Metacritic rate higher The Sands of Time higher than Warrior Within. IGN and Metacritic rate The Sands of Time as one of the greatest videogames of all time (inside their top 100) not Warrior Within. And rightly so, as The Sands of Time contains both a better soundtrack and a superior and more complex plot. Not to mention more beaitful graphics of palaces and more eye-catching views. Soundtrack? The Sands of Time clearly wins, I still listed to this date the inmortal masterpiece "Time Only Knows" the most beatiful song of Persian influence you will ever hear. Warrior Within's rock soundtrack was both off-topic and anachronic as that music did not exist in Ancient Persia and less beatiful and majestic than The Sands of Time's soundtrack. The graphics of The Sands of Time are far more aesthetic, with more beatiful palaces and more majestic views. Plot? There is not even comparison. Warrior Within is just a comercial product with a simple plox, only focused on battles. The Sands of Time has a more complex argument that mixes both the story about the time daga and the combats with an amazing love story between the prince and Farah. There is no love story whatsoever between the prince and any character in Warrior Within, the psychology of the prince and his relations with other carachters are far more complex and deep in The Sands of Time. In sum, Warrior Within is just que comercial product made for pure marketing. The Sands of Time is an immortal masterpiece, an ARTISTIC videogame. Warrior Within is not art, it is just a comercial product.

I want a remake of Sands of Time to be done by FromSoftware. Sekiro's combat already reminds me of SoT's combat where I'm constantly holding the block and waiting for a moment to strike or sometimes just going ham on groups of enemies. All they would need to do for combat is tone down difficulty slightly, redo the vaulting mechanic slightly, and incorporate wall jumping and rebounding into it. Combat isn't the main reason though. Just imagine the Sultan's palace of SoT made by From! Oh my God, it would be a big connected environment filled with shortcuts that connect everything! Also there could still be places for respawning/teleporting. The PoP universe had those magic fountain rooms. Something could be though of to make make mini versions of those fountains around the palace for resting and teleporting between. Boss or large figtts against enemies would still gather enough sand time power to see the future, but I don't think teleporting between them makes sense when there is already magic alternate demension type shit... Anyway, Imagine Lordran, but as a Persian palace! The part that would really take the cake is the enemies! The Soulsborne and Sekiro games have AMAZING enemy design. Imagine sand monsters that range from common people, to various military ranking soldiers. Then all kinds of animals (mostly for the menagerie) and various bird types, and even bugs like those beetles. And finally the bosses! Where fighting your father is a crazy challenge, the final fight with the vizear could have multiple stages and plot twists (like he overpowers you between stages, gets the dagger, and stabs himself to become a winged creature like in TTT... Idk), or the gryphon from WW as the boss in the Giant bird cage! Im imagining a dahaka type boss, but that won't make sence for the Persia setting, and with Sekiro having mini bosses the Crow Master comes to mind. Both WW and TTT had giants. TTT had a 2v1 boss fight! There is certain plenty of existing creatures and bosses From could use. The only thing I don't trust From to do is tight puzzle platforming. But with the tightness of combat in Sekiro being at a peak for them, they could shift focus from combat to traversal.

@@ptlemon1101 Sorry I didn't make it clear. I wouldn't want them to keep their signature difficulty level. Just their world building, monster, and boss design is perfect for adapting that palace that's been overrun with sand people/animals/monster (the potential for bosses is off the charts with the PoP series too). Then make the Sekiro combat WAY more forgiving, and give it a few acrobatic moves.

I'd be down for that as long as FS refrains from making the game outrageously difficult LOL. The POP games aren't in the same league of difficulty as the Soulsborne series and it shouldn't be made that way is all I'm saying. I'd hate to see one of my favorite franchises remade only to be too rage-inducing to play LMAO.

I love the sands of time trilogy. It had great characters, great story, great music, great gameplay the platforming alone was way ahead of it's time and it's more refined and enjoyable than in most action games today. And most important each game felt unique and very distinct from one another. But I have to say, these games as enjoyable as they are, are kind of a product of their time. Most action games today have a bigger focus on combat and cinematic storytelling and less in puzzle solving and platforming.

Assassin's Creed is a great franchise. Most of their games are amazing. No wonder it hurt PoP; it was originally its sequel & borrowed heavily from PoP. But given AC's success, any new PoP needs to be overhauled to avoid being redundant. Look at how they made the 2018 God of War. Something like that can be done. I think a linear, polished action would be better than a sandbox one.
