Another thing that is completely abandoned when people try to adapt Doctor Doom, he is trying to save the world. He is the world's hero in his own mind. He saw many futures, and every one that he was not ruling the world had humanity wiped out while the one he saw with him ruling had humanity survive. To him, becoming the ruler of the world is a necessity in order to save humanity, and those that oppose him are literally working to doom the future of humanity. His all-consuming quest for power is unrivaled in comics. The more he achieves, the more he wants, and he usually taps into such further knowledge rather easily in his ascension. Every other villain either has misguided intentions of nobility (Thanos) or is complacent with their superiority (Kang, Red Skull, Magneto), but those are never enough for Doom. He is like Internet Rule 34, but only he can be the sole supplier of said porn. He is the veritable epitome of "well that escalated". To commit to using him in a story is to relent to an evil that gets worse and never ends, which is antithetical to Disneyfilm's quest to understand and redeem everyone in eyeshot.

@@uzii6540 Technically yes. You can introduce anyone as a background character with no need for backstory. But that won't tell you much about that character other than that he exists. Dr Stange needed a whole film to explain who he is and how he got the job of Sorcerer Supreme, and what that job even is. Dr Doom is a more complex character. Like Strange, he started out as an accomplished surgeon. (I say "started out", but nobody is born a surgeon; the TV series _Scrubs_ showed how that is a journey in itself.) Like Strange, he began dabbling with magic, but for completely different reasons and in different ways. That by itself is a whole story in itself, and that's still far from the iconic Dr Doom. He also went into politics, becoming a successful and popular head of state (or planet, depending on continuity; in the comics it has always been a planet, and Doom is basically their actual, living, reigning Jesus). And that still ignores the one thing casual readers or watchers of the animated shows are most aware of: Dr Richards hatred for him. (Although Richards has more to worry about with Namor, Galactus, the Krull, and the Living Tribunal. Or even just fellow inventor Tony Stark, whom Dr Pym doesn't even take seriously. (Everyone always seems to forget that Professor Dr Banner is actually the smartest and most accomplished of the lot, apart from Dr Doom, ignoring how Spiderman's physics professor saved the universe 616 from the Quantum Mechanic that one time because nobody else would have been able to even understand the threat.)) I mean you could just drop the fully fleshed character in there and develop the backstory in flashbacks and references. It worked for Thanos, but Thanos is a rather inconsequential character by comparison, and his MCU version was still just a fraction of what had been established in the comics. (For example, his rivalry with Deadpool for the attention of Lady Death was missing entirely.)

The issue with Dr Doom in film is that he always plays the antagonist in the Fantstic 4's origin story, and as such his own origin story gets glossed over. I think origin stories have been done to death in superhero cinema but movies like Joker or Venom show that people still warmly receive an origin story if it has a unique spin on it. So I think for Doom's introduction into the MCU they should flip the script. Instead of making him the antagonist in a Fantastic 4 movie, make the Fantastic 4 the antagonists to a fully fleshed-out Doom origin movie.

@@targetdreamer257 or, another alternative is to write a story showing how *he* thinks of himself as a hero, even if he would be the only one. In mainline comics, it is a thing that Doom managed to travel to both the past and future, and while checking possible futures, he found his rule to be imperative for anything resembling a good future for humanity. Essentially, his every villainous act comes from both his ego, and his knowledge that this is something he *has* to do for everyone else. He is trying his hardest to match what that future's version of him did so that he can save the planet, but what that version did to get there was fundamentally immoral. That isn't how they write him now (beyond the saw his future bit being a thing) but if you want to do something like Thanos with him, that's how you'd want to go about it.

It's not impossible, just very unlikely. Victor Von Doom is a multi dimensional character, fleshed out over decades in the comics. He's not just a one trick pony who's easily portrayed in a movie. He's not a shallow villain but a complex man with grand aspirations and even grander abilities. He's the hero of HIS story, ruler of his country and even loved by his people. In short, he deserves his OWN movie.

One of the main issues in movie, is that it suffers from Sam Raimi's Spider-man-villainitis: the nemesis has to be deeply intrinsic to the heroes origin so as to be a dark reflection... That does exist in the comics and can be great, but the thing with Doom, is that he is not defined by his relation-ship to the Fantastic Four, he is so much more than that. Villains can exist without the need of being defined by their relationship with a hero, they can be full-fletched persons with complex motivations that changes day-to-day, as it does for any of human being. Defining people only by their relationship to us (or the heroes in this case) reduces people and characters to very simple imitation, when they can be so much more, once you realize their internal complexities

Dr. Doom is the embodiment of the Nietzschean ideal of Will To Power and the definition of Indominable. In many ways he's ironically the greatest super hero in terms of his traits. My personal favorite example is the original Secret Wars when he's being literally torn apart by the Beyonder after being completely defeated, no armor, and totally naked, but he still won't give up, and because he refused to accept defeat, even in such a destroyed state, he finds a way to win! That is Dr. Doom. That's like Tony Stark beating Thanos with all the Infinity Stones with none of his technology or friends to help. Dr. Doom can accomplish the impossible. The problem is his ego and madness of knowing 100 percent for a fact that his mother IS burning in Hell. He's motivated by love and wanting to save his mother that he goes to extreme degrees and doesn't care about the consequences of his actions. The means serve the ends. The Fantastic 4 basically hold a mirror up to Dr. Doom and makes him realize, despite what he may otherwise believe, that his worst scars aren't on his body but in his soul and heart and he hates knowing some part of him is weak. He can wear armor to protect his body. He can use his mind to outsmart people. He can use magic to go toe-to-toe with people like Dr. Strange. However nothing can protect him from the hole in his heart and all the power and self-aggrandizement is an addiction to try to fill that hole. He hates being reminded of that. The tragedy of Dr. Doom is if not for that one weakness that perverts all he tries to do he would be the greatest super hero of all time. But, you know, I guess making him a giant doofus and using an actor teenage girls and middle aged wine aunts have on their bedroom walls or office cubicles works too!

I think the reason why Doom is so difficult to portray on the big screen is due to the fact that he is an amalgamation of different people and tropes. I mean he is a scientist, but also a sorcerer, but also a politician, but also a dictator. This worked on the '60s where comic book character were popular because they were exagerated and cartoonish, but now the audience prefer a more serious and belivable adaptation of the comic or an adaptation that jokes about his absurd nature. Dr Doom just need to be handled in a more thoughfull way. An example could be mashing together some of his characteristics: science and magic are opposites, but what if Doom tried to use science to create artificial magic and make that the experiment worked but scarred him for life which is why he has to wear a mask. That would make the comic book's fans happy.

Then (or concurrently to the movie) release a limited Disney+ series titled "Latveria" depicting everyday life in the country. Each episode is told from the POV of another citizen to flesh out the somewhat complicated relationship between Doom and his people. Show how Latveria thrived under Victor while it has fallen into disrepair and squalor when he suddenly vanished. End the show with Doom's triumphant return, maybe with the added bonus of a brief confrontation wherein he obliterates the warmonger/dictator who tried to fill the power vacuum. In future appearances, I'd pair him up with Strange (either in his own sequel or Dr Strange 3) asking Stephen for help to retrieve his mother's soul from hell; have him almost destroy Wakanda in BP3, seemingly team up with the FF in their sequel and threequel but gradually work towards several pieces of his own puzzle to fall into place so he can usurp either The Beyonders' or even Galactus' power and reign supreme. In a nutshell, go the opposite route to Thanos' sparing teases and brief cameos and deliver a rich and profound canvas of Doom's complexity so we as viewers get to learn all the intricacies that make him uniquely compelling.
@commandercaptain46642 жыл бұрын
He'd have to be presented without being a parallel mirror to any hero, for Doom has no equal. Also, he has to be irredeemable, which is antithetical to Disneyfilm's fantasy of changing and helping everyone, like some ex-girlfriend in an abusive relationship.

The fact is that a little of people forget that Dr. Doom was once in the running for sorcerer supreme with Steven Strange. He is every bit the sorcerer that Dr. Strange is.
@somejerk566211 ай бұрын
He even entered the competition once, coming in second to Doctor Strange. Doom had planned on this; a custom among sorcerers is that the winner owes 2nd place a favor. Doom used this to make Strange help him save his mother's soul from Mephisto, something Strange would have done it anyway if Doom just asked him. But Doom does not ask for favors.

Emperor Doom did not adopt anyone; those are his kids with Sue from a reality other than 616. It's a plot point they later retconned (into Doom making creating them himself), but that's how it was written in Battleworld.

I'd actually love a series centered around Doom, focusing on his efforts and the reasoning behind those efforts: That he wants to save the universe but understands because of his magic that this requires him to rule the world. I'm paraphrasing, but it was said that the only universe where humanity thrives in a perfect utopia is one where Doom rules all.

@tananatana4011 Жыл бұрын
This is just pure headcanon. Doom isn't "conflicted" about ruling the world, in fact, Doom doesn't really care about "saving the universe", he just wants to rule the world, because he's a shitbag. It's not true that the only universe where humanity thrived was the one Doom ruled, that was just something Bast said cuz it was referencing Doom's ego that he would genuinely believe that. But it's not true, Doom ain't that complicated. He wants power and will kill to gain that power. Why does he want power? To be a god, it's not because of his people, he literally just wants to be a god

@@tananatana4011 You could almost be describing Lex Luthor as well. Alphas that trip over their own egos.
@tananatana4011 Жыл бұрын
@@DanielAppleton-lr9eq Lex is different than Doom in a sense that Doom's ego is a LOT more fragile. Lex just KNOWS he's the smartest, he KNOWS that he's peak human, the only reason he's upset at Superman is because he doesn't think someone should be better BY DEFAULT than him, it's like a spit to the face. He isn't insecure about Superman as he just sees it almost as an equivalent to nepotism. Like he's God's favorite and he didn't have to work for his powers. Doom on the other hand deep down KNOWS he isn't the best, he KNOWS Reed is smarter, but will never admit it because he's so vain. Also their motivations differ, Doom's motivation is personal, Lex's motivation is more so philosophical. Superman is hope, he represents better tomorrow, brighter future, he's the goodest guy of them all trying his best to save everyone. Lex is someone who misinterprets that message, to Lex, Superman is an unrealistic standard, a get-out-of-jail-free card, he believes as long as Superman exists, humanity has no reason to evolve. He thinks he has alternative motives, because no one is "that good". Hell, once when Lex was revealed his true identity, he thought it must be some kind of an error, because through the ego filled perspective of Lex, it doesn't make sense that an all powerful God would waste it's time as a random nobody reporter. Doom however wants to murder a family because a guy was smarter than him in college, like that's essentially it. He's INCREDIBLY narcissistic and petty, and the whole point of Doom is that he's supposed to be pathetic. He isn't supposed to be "cool", he's basically if Dennis Reynolds became a supervillain
@DanielAppleton-lr9eq Жыл бұрын
@@tananatana4011 He claims that waiting for Superman & Co. will make us weak & dependent. I think that he uses that rationale SO MUCH that he started believing it himself. Victor Von Doom comes off as a " snowflake " & would only relinquish his thirst for power if somebody like a mixture of Galactus, Thanos, maybe Ultron came along & laid him well & truly LOW - as in a protagonist / antagonist who could destroy him for good.

Same issue has happened with Lex Luthor. All the live action adaptations (except maybe Smallville, which wasn't even fully formed as a character) focus on the wacky businessman/scientist part, and not enough on the parallels with their rival superhero, the element that makes them interesting to begin with.
@Darthzilla992 жыл бұрын
They did a decent job with Lex in the first Christopher Reeves film if you take into context the comics of that time. This was before John Bryne turned rebooted Lex into a calculating billionaire. Lex at the time was a simple evil mad scientist. While Gene Hackman was campy, the parallel between them was that Superman is essentially a humble God who sees himself as a fallible Mortal man while Lex is an egotistical Mortal man who sees himself as an infallible God.
@TighelanderII2 жыл бұрын
Gawd, how I hate Gene Hackman's portrayal of Lex. All it needed were the, "POW" and "BOOF" of the Sixties Batman TV show. Reeves was great, but the movie as a whole was crap.

As an eternal Doom stan, having a different backstory for Doom could work. But in making that backstory, you have to take into account how the events will shape him as a person. Backstories are explanations for a character’s actions, not a way to excuse them. In my opinion, Victor doesn’t hate Reed because he has a better reputation. In the comics, Reed pointed out a flaw in the machine that gave Victor his scar, and Victor ignored him because he thought Reed wanted to upstage him. Victor truly believes that he is the hero of this story. And you don’t tell a hero they’re wrong unless you’re a villain. If you’re not trying to be a part of Victor’s solution, then you’re part of the problem. And we all know that Victor von Doom is *very* keen on fixing problems.

Personally, I always consider Julian McMahon a great casting because the 2 role he is most known for and 2 roles years after the films all contain aspects of Doom like villains in them. Cole Turner from Charmed, Christian Troy from Nip/Tuck, Jonah from Runaways, Zackariah Webb from Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency. The last one in particular is almost a homage to Doom. He definitely can do Doom justice if they ever give him the material.

What I love about Doom is how he mirrors each member of the fantastic 4: Johnny: They both have an arrogant personality and a need for the spot light but Johnny learns to work as a member of the team. Ben: They are both disfigured and deformed beyond recognition but Ben learns to accept himself as he is meanwhile Doom wears a mask. Susan: they are both the glue of their "families" (the ff and Latveria respectively) but Susan does it out of love and Doom at the end of the day out of ego. Reed: Now this is the one, Doom mirrors Reed as what would have happened if he chose to close himself to the world and became a simple machine focused on achieving his goal with no emotion and that's also why Doom hates and wants to be Reed because even after everything he perceived himself to be, how much he planned or how much he sacrificed, Reed still came out on top and he didn't need to do any of that because he has a family and Doom stands alone.
