Holy shit. I just randomly remembered the original Operation Flashpoing: Cold War Crisis few days ago, what a coincidence. I got it for my (which I believe) 10th birthday present when I hardly knew english. I literally had no clue what was happening at all in the game, and going through the training took me hours, because I didn't understand what shouldering my weapon meant. It is incredible how much patience kids can have. But it felt like an amazing achievement going through the training course. I can still remember the title menu music, and how I was puzzled why the main mission was called champagne (I did not know the difference between champagne and campaign). I unfortunately got stuck in the mission where I had to drive the jeep somewhere, because I did not understand what I where I was supposed to go. I sunk hours into this game with absolutely no idea as a 10 year old, yet I cherished every second of it. Me and my friends just fooled around in different missions discussing what on god's name we were supposed to do. One thing I still clearly remember is when we bailed out of a heli from low altitude, and how my character broke his legs and refused to walk. That was when I was shocked how much detail a game can have. I will never forget (which I believe to be the first proper mission) where you charge into a village. I think I had gotten this game after CoD1, so I couldn't figure out how to aim down sights. Literally pressing every button, I realized it was defaulted to V, which I find very strange. After many deaths, I proceeded somehow, and believe the town gets attacked by tanks. And since I probably wasn't properly playing the objective, had my entire team killed. So I was huddling next to a house while the tanks roamed around me. I still remember my heart sinking when the house I was crawling around got hit with a shell and leaned over with some crack on the wall to indicate it's been destroyed. And this one heli scenario was one of my favorite as well. I learned how to control the heli by literally playing it over and over again, clicking different things and realizing things are happening. One day I managed to beat the scenario, and I saw the indication to return to base. I had no idea how to land the damned thing. I tried my best until I was going down too fast, so I bailed. The heli crashed in the woods, but the game recognized it as returned to base and I won. At the last cut scene I could see my co pilot standing next to a destroyed burning heli haha. I also remember how you hear something about getting beer when you fly back. I have to get this game again... I seriously can't believe how I remember so much of this game in such detail. I never thought it was such a big deal for me. I believe though I didn't get it, I felt the intricacies and the detail. Figuring it out made me feel like becoming a professional soldier.

I am one of the Americans whose name is in the credits of OFP:CWC. I was one of about 20 English-speaking fans on the OFP website forum before the public demo was released. Bohemia Interactive took our personal wishes (mine were side doorguns on the Blackhawk and fully rendered forests) and made them reality. When we heard that Codemasters was to be the publisher, several fans wailed that CM would be the death of the title. Prophetic. Another note is that Operation Flashpoint: Elite was nearly bug-free and the Classic XBox's clear voice comm made my time in OFP:E some of the best multiplayer gaming I have ever enjoyed. My suspicion is that Microsoft was not fond of the game because of its infinite replayability. (It had a Lite version of OFP: Resistance's mission editor.) I'll add further comments as I watch the remainder of this documentary.

Damn, I miss this game. I remember wreaking havoc on an enemy squad with an SVD from pretty far away. Far enough that enemy AI can't spot me despite the report from the SVD. Operation Flashpoint: Resistance is a very dated game by 2019 standards but I'll never forget how fucking terrifying it was to play back in '02. A big part of that is because we are all older and have "been there, done that" with many games. It's hard for games, especially single player games to grab and hold my attention these days. I still really enjoy multi-player games a lot. OFP was the ultimate game back then. One to beat all the others. Way ahead its time. Open world (no need to explain), survival (find a medical tent when you are injured, ammo etc), great stories (remember Gastovski?), elements of horror (when you are surrounded by tanks that patrol the area, and you must avoid them like monsters). Thanks to the editor and modding community, you could do almost any game there. I remember the first zombie survival maps in OFP ... Way ahead ... It was also my first original game. I ordered it via phone call (no internet). I waited about two weeks. I was even willing to cancel the order, because the cost of the game was almost half a year of my pocket money. I'm glad I did not do it. Fortunately, the game was in my language. It's funny how a child can quickly understand what the war is about, learn from mistakes. I quickly realized that using the M60 brings more enemy fire to you. That you have to flank. That you must think, not just push the LMB. That You need to aim before target when its run, and sometimes higher (bullet drop)... Discovery of mods, downloading them in an internet cafe, testing countless number of pistols and rifles just to see how they look and sound in editor for hours... Uber realistic mods. Errors, crashes... Later, internet and MP in large coop missions, where often You had 1 or 2 lives. I remember one game, where from a few dozen people at the beginning, only 5 left after 6 hours (included me, just cus of luck). First MP PvP maps, capturing areas, planting bombs next to the road and waiting for enemy (once I detonated bomb to late trying to kill 2 guys on a red motorbike - they didint die from the blast, but the shock wave gave them some sort of nitro speed, so they cant turn the bike and they are killed themselfs on the building next to the road...). I love OFP. I love this community. Writing shit on the briefing map to piss off admins (btw they know who write this cus of logs...). And I found a good mate IRL back then who loves game as well! We tested mods and campaigns and later we discussed how we finish each mission. And all those quotes when you died. Amazing. One time I even successfully completed the mission - killing all enemies in Houdan and prevent any escapees from calling reinfornements - you get "Houdan sized" message and mission completes successfully without the need to retreat and eventually got shot down by ZSU-23. "Shilka". I was blown away by this. Single player campaign also had some twists and alternative mission paths in end-game when hunting for Scud launchers. Amazing game.

@@r.daneel.90 Codemasters just never understood that OFP was never about being a battle simulator or tactical shooter. It was a *war* simulator. And during missions you could never really relax, just in case you had missed an enemy patrol that spots and shoots you.

I liked Rainbow Six Rogue Spear a lot as a kid. I dunno if I was just young, or it was legitimately very hard, but that game was intense and slow paced / tactical stuff, NOTHING like R6:S.. Or Vegas ones... man... Rainbox Six was soooo different in the 90s / early 00s.. I guess not a 'military' sim, though, more of a special ops or SWAT or anti-terror kinda sim thing. It was good though. Got emotionally connected to your characters / squad and would actually feel really, really bad if someone died. I think I eventually beat that game either without anyone from my original squad dying, or at least, I got one guy from the original squad to the end of the game (Chavez rings a bell??). Forget which, it was like literally 20 years ago lol.. damn,. OFP is obviously a lot different, more like ARMA / Project Reality (BF 1942 mod) / uhhhh the game my best friend likes that the people who made Project Reality made... Squad? I think.. Those games aren't QUITE my cup of tea but I feel the old Rainbow Six games and OFP have some cross overs regarding immersion, realism, and emotional connections to your squadmates (just very different "scales" of warfare / combat, R6 being a small tactical stealth thing, infantry only, and OFP/Project Reality being more a vast open warzone with vehicles and such). It was also my first multiplayer experience. I can't even remember the name of the platform it launched the multiplayer through, but I'm sure it became defunct at some point I recall..

But not into Arma 3. There is a mod for arma 3 and even its DLCs like red hammer and resistence (even though resistence have only few first missions as its still work in progress) all made by different people. But I highly reccomend downloading mod called "Cold War Crisis" by "Cnotk". I finished the whole campign perfectly playable just 3 missions I had problém with mission ending when I finished all tasks aso I had to use "endmission" cheat but despite that it was perfectly playable Cuscenes work great and Im sure I will yet play it again. Such memories from this game with the realism and the modding community. I did my first addon for any game when I modeled the Antonov 124 and tried to make it work with the flight model in OFP. Would have been great if the game allowed vehicles to actually be transported as cargo, but it was good for massive paratrooper insertions :D Thank you Bohemia for this wonderful open universe to play with for many many years!

Bohemia interactive is one of those rare companies that actually cares about its brand and its community. They started out with just a pure live of making games and still today that's what they do it for. They love their community undoubtedly and enjoy making content for others to play and they also take criticism very well where as most would scoff at it. Like how in arma 3 there was no single player options yet after given some time they built a story (several actually) and expanded upon it with incredible flexibility. This is a rare company to see and we should be appreciative of their dedication. I'm aware that not all company stay pure forever but bohemia interactive has done one hell of a job at sticking to their roots and delivering on their promise.

Awesome video. I was working at Codemasters as a dev in 2000 and remember early builds of the game, in fact I still have the copy they gave me free on release day. It wasn't a complete campaign even when Codemasters discovered them but I recall some discussion that the designer had been influenced by the Amiga open world game Hunter. We had some level designers from our studio in Leamington Spa work on the the original OF campaign, so I'm guessing there was a push to get the title out using some of Codemasters resources, in fact many of the digitised faces in the game were in fact my collegues. It's sad that Codies lost that partnership with Bohemian as it was some stunning IP and could have benefited them both. Arma is an exceptional simulation but perhaps underated and undermarketed, maybe it's for the best as there is little out there that comes close in terms of realism.

@@Arcantropolo Yeah, Codemasters was the publisher for Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis as well as developer and publisher to the the "Red Hammer" official expansion to it while Bohemia Interactive was the developer of the core game, meaning Codemasters came away with owning the Operation Flashpoint name and the publishing rights under that name. Bohemia Interactive still owns the rights to the software and game content though. Which is why they were able to re-release the original Operation Flashpoint game under the ARMA: Cold War Assault name to fit in with the rest of their later ARMA series and still keep it commercially available without having to go through Codemasters for publishing. Operation Flashpoint is dead, long live ARMA.

I don't mind playing Operation Flashpoint Red River, actually love it. It's has 3 things I loved about the original OFP: freedom of action (although a bit limited), simlicity (RR is even more simple) and link to the modern world. Arma with it's sophisticated controls and customazation took OFP to the next level turning it into a simulator with congtrols like in an airplane

Cold War Crisis blew my mind. I even loved Dragon Rising and played its exquisite -- and at times utterly broken -- PvP for probably more than three hundred hours. It was brutal. I still have grit in my teeth. I don't blame anyone who couldn't hack it, but if you stuck with the game, there has been nothing like it before or since. In the end, a confused and distracted Codemasters, trying to strike a balance between CoD hysteria and the technical demands of a true milsim, allowed Sion Lenton to hijack the project and I believe he ousted Bohemia in an attempt to put his own mark on the franchise. The guy was completely inept and should never have been in that position for any game under any circumstances.

Dragon rising was NOT operation flashpoint by any means or shape or form. The publisher Codemasters bullied BI for the ip for that game and released that trash... so please don't ever put these games in the same category. Flashpoint and Resistance and Elite were all BI, the rest were abominations.

This is still the most realistic depiction of iron sights I've ever seen in a video game. Newer games make the sights obscure everything.
