I've personally been a fan of the yogscast since the very beginning. I'd hardly claim to be an expert, but there are a couple of things that I feel have contributed to their decline (at least on youtube) over the years. For one Lewis' mental health has been on a noticeable decline over the last few years. It really became visible partway through the Moonquest series when he had a what could be described as a mental break down during the recording of an episode (while they were searching for oil and hadn't managed to produce any for several hours). The yearly Jingle Jams also take a heavy toll on him because of just how much he invests in them/many streams he participates in. As well as some alcoholism which gets treated as a joke or a meme (think "Time to get the gin!") most of the time. I remember in the early days he rarely raised his voice beyond laughter, but now it's become a meme about how raging, salty, or "SHUT UP!" he can be. (TBH before what happened with Turps and Sjin, I had Lewis pegged as the person who would fold and retire/quit first) For another the rise of Twitch as a streaming service platform has had an effect. The Yogscast, as a whole, have geared themselves into more of a live broadcast network than a serialized production company using twitch as their platform. With many of the episodes that are put on the side channels (like Duncan's) being edited down versions of the live streamed game sessions.

Yogscast has definitely declined over the years, but I personally love how they are right now. The Yogscast stopped being strictly about their main channel, but instead their main channel became a way to introduce different members of the cast to the audience, and it was up to the audience to seek them out on their own. People like Zoey, Zylus, Ravs, and etc probably wouldn't have ever showed up on the main channel if they mostly only did Minecraft, but now I've found some of my favorite content creators. This isn't even mentioning their consistent yearly charity streams, which feels almost like The Office, which is great.

Same. I love daily TTT and a bunch of the streamed series you can find on the Yogscast Live! Channel. Not to mention Tom's channel. Even Simon has his own channel to upload VODs to now, though it's like 97% Animal Crossing atm. Their content just doesn't get old to me, even after like 700 episodes of TTT n' other Gmod stuff. I only hope it remains relevant enough that they can all continue to make a living doing it.

Man, I've been consistently watching these guys for nearly 10 years now. I don't think the yogs will ever get back to their peak viewership, but that's not their goal, and I get the impression they don't care all that much about. The core idea behind the yogs has changed in the time since they stopped doing minecraft. It's Lewis's passion project now, and his view is that the purpose of the network is largely to facilitate JingleJam. james minett's comment also has some great points. I don't think it makes sense to talk about the main channel in a vacuum, it's now only a small part of what the yogs do. If you look at the evolution of the yogs as a whole, it looks less like a decline, and more like a maturation. How could you make a video like this and not talk about JingleJam?

They're definitely still very profitable. I would honestly argue that their perceived downfall is due to us growing older. I liked watching the old yogscast as a teenager, but I recently gave SOI a go and it wasn't as entertaining as I remembered. What I have noticed is that youtubers like the yogscast and pewdiepie that seems genuine and seems to enjoy what they do tend to have fewer issues keeping up their relevancy. I still occasionally watch them, and the reason why is because it's less like watching a group of entertainers playing fictive personalities and more like a bunch of lads having fun.
@ButterBoyism4 жыл бұрын
@Filip Gasic Whether or not something is good is entirely subjective. What isn't is popularity, someone like Pewdiepie is popular for a reason. I'm just hazarding a guess but his audience is likely teenagers, which means as you grow older it becomes less entertaining to watch. Nothing wrong with that. And the same comment on every thread? It's a week ago, but pretty sure I responded to two comments here, of course it'll be similar responses when the stuff I'm responding to is the same. I feel like the yogscast more or less dug their own grave, yogventures aside basically every series they did was scripted because they saw the success that SoI had, but they never fell through with it, they never completed any of them. they would just prematurely end them when they stopped getting views, and move onto the next series, and OCCASIONALLY poke fun at the past series, including the countless references to them all being in the same "cinematic universe", like how towards the end of moonquest, they found the old and decrepit jaffa factory. bit it was never more then just references.

Yes there main channel isn't doing great but they have grown a lot on Twitch which is there main focus now not youtube. Plus they have had lots of new members who have joined. Just some points that I think need to be known: For years Simon has regularly appeared in streams instead of youtube videos as he didn't enjoy playing the same game constantly each week,he didn't disappear suddenly. They are a MCN not one youtube channel They stopped doing minecraft on the main channel because they said that they got bored of doing it aswell as getting less views so they moved it to Duncan and Sjins channels. They tried to do a minecraft series again on the main channel but it didn't get many views so they stopped doing it. I feel like it’s also worth considering that with the ad-pocalypse making KZbin a much less viable source of income and the rise of twitch it’s not fair to say the Yogscast has stopped growing or declined by just looking at their KZbin channel. They’re doing way more stuff on Twitch now and with more of their income coming from streams and less from KZbin it makes sense for them to put less effort into KZbin so they can focus on Twitch.

I've seen two videos now, describing The Yogscast as having a downfall/fall and think it's quite disingenuous, sure to anyone who is purely a youtube viewer it might look as if they're declining however they have merely transitioned to twitch as they've found it to be a more lucrative area, their team is still growing signing partenerships with Game Grumps and Rooster Teeth whilst also now having a indie game department. Part of me since wathing these two videos by TooMuch and TheMisterEpic has wanted to make a sort of response to both of them detailing how yes there has been controversy in last year or so however it hasn't actually effected their videos as The Yogscast were beginning to diversify before any of this was happening. As a company The Yogscast are looking to be on a very logical progression to become a very stable company due to how they have been diversifying their wealth over the last couple of years. What a lot of people also don't realise is that they have a partnership with Fourth Floor which is an offshoot of the yogscast which headlines a lot of large media deals for them including their partnerships with their American counterparts.

As for Yoglabs, I think the reason why that one ended abruptly was because Minecraft mods, in general, started to decline. With the exception of updated classics and a few innovative new ones, most mods are boring, repetitive or permanently unfinished. A large part of that is Minecraft updating a lot more frequently, leaving coders to scramble to update to the newest version. While I personally don't believe in this theory, some speculate that Mojang does this on purpose to discourage folks from modding the game.
@qzimyion4 жыл бұрын
Mojang actually encourages modding, well only the java team the bedrock team on the other hand is equivalent to bethesda in terms of modding and activity tries to kill bedrock modding community.

Yogslabs ended because they no longer had a build team, their old build team (well they didnt work just for Yogs) moved on from Minecraft into "real" jobs and different careers. Nobody else at Yogscast had the time or ability for that kind of thing. Lewis has mentioned that there have been multiple small attempts to look into bringing back a series like that, but each time they get close the people who suggest they might be able to do the work can't go through with committing to it.
@ashnambers4 жыл бұрын
I have no idea where people get that theory from. No one realizes how many updates made modding so much easier. The first one was the Lan update, made solo and servers run the same so any mod in single player worked in multiplayer. The 2nd was the removeal of normal id's to text-based identification (the mincraft:dirt instead on ID 2). This removed a whole hassle of making sure no IDs conflicted. Idk how many poeple remember how modding minecraft use to work but their was a time I had to spent an hour changing id's so I could play IC2, Bluidcraft, and red power together. The Java team 100% supports modding, it's just not a priority to have a random guys code work when you update your game for the fans who never play modded.
@blakefasciolo85564 жыл бұрын
Lewis actually mentioned why SOI ended abruptly in a stream once. It was very brief and random so I don’t blame you for not finding it. He said that they stopped cause the people playing the characters were not into it anymore and wanted to move on, so the series couldn’t go on without them. I still think, like everyone else, they should’ve made an ending, but I don’t know if they were just lazy or didn’t want to shoehorn in a crappy ending just cause they had to. Also, I think that moon quest did have an ending since it transitioned into hole diggers, which ended with them blowing up their space station, which I assume they did cause they had a boatload of materials and tech, so there wasn’t a challenging goal to work towards at that point. Good vid though. I love the yogs even now, but it’s interesting (and sad) to see how they went =(
@somelokyguy64664 жыл бұрын
I'm also gonna mention that while the actors in the series wanted to move on, the final nail in the coffin was when the SOI save file corrupted and their latest backup was ancient. The VoxelBox offered to help rebuild everything and were already heavily involved with SOI but the YogsCast thought it was best to just end the series there. Edit: They also released the final backup of the world file to the public, I have no idea where one would find it these days but you could see some of the unfinished SOI content that was planned.

Ok, so this video was great, but there is one serious hole in the information. Twitch! While he did mention it in passing, their annual charity stream, the Jingle Jam, raises massive amounts of money every year for charity, often ranging in the several millions. Some content creators, such as Sips, have nearly entirely moved to twitch. Now, I’m not an avid twitch viewer, so I can’t give accurate numbers for viewer count, but it certainly isn’t insignificant. While Minecraft is, once again, quite popular, the Yogscast seems to be shifting towards streaming, a natural fit that allows their now massive group to express their specific interests and skills. While their KZbin has become somewhat repetitive (although the amount of TTT that I have watched must now number in the thousands, with no sign of slowing dow ), their Twitch is definitely more diverse. Again, generally watch the VOD’s, so perhaps it would be a good idea to investigate this yourself. Additionally for those who want, nay need, more Simon in their lives, there is a decent backlog of him on Tom’s channel (Tom Angory) and I’m fairly sure he appears there quite regularly. Finally, the Yogscast subreddit has a few large threads on the “Sijn/Turps Situation”, which you should read if you are at all interested. Thanks for the video btw, a very good overview/analysis of the downfall.
@kaiishere0164 жыл бұрын
I'd just like to add onto your comment, about the Sjin / Turps situations, as well as about the MadCat situation: There are a lot of hazy details about the Sjin and MadCat situations in particular, and a lot of discussion / theorising that's still going on, most of which doesn't actually make it onto the Yogscast subreddit. The Yogscast subreddit is quite harsh when it comes to the ex-members, from community witch-hunts to moderators removing comments that attempt to support the ex-members or debunk something. There's a lot of information there but it's definitely just one side of the story There's been a long-running divide of sorts between the Yogscast KZbin commenters and the Reddit commmunity as well, which only really became serious due to the Turps, Sjin and ThatMadCat situations. So that's another thing to keep in mind if you want different viewpoints

What "fall"? Because they are not pulling in millions of views on their videos anymore? KZbin was to blame for that as Lewis once said that it was because youtube blocked their minecraft content from being frontpaged. That's why their views stopped hitting in the millions. Then youtube gaming came around and they didn't get the exposure anymore they once had gotten. But they are still uploading videos across several channels, doing podcasts, have more members than ever, and stream every day. Not to mention a succesful yogcon last year. No my dude, they've not fallen in the slightest. They're merely excelling in a different direction and it's great. I mean in general KZbin is declining and with it views, subs, and growth in general to channels that are not the big names, making it impossible for long time channels to grow as quick as they did. Audiences change, so for us who grew up watching yogscast and saw their transformation from fumbling into new series to appease the fans and to now where everyone is more involved with their own channel or stream but keep being part of yogscast it is better, because now you get soo much content from each member's streams. They "declined" on youtube sure, but on twitch they are very much alive and still going.

Sips is the only member I still watch of the Yogscast and I've been watching him since his playthrough of the first Orcs Must Die. But I do miss Tekkit with Sips and Sjin and the rest like Rythian, Lewis, Simon, Duncan, Strippin was awesome too, had the whole Rail Brothers series that was part of Tekkit it was my absolute favorite series. Maybe that's why when I recently found all the different Hermits and Hermitcraft I loved it because it reminds me of the old day of the Yogscast and The Creatures who had TreeTopia and CreatureTopia series.

The Yogscast started with that first channel, with WoW and their first let's play, but Lewis and Simon are not the whole Yogscast. They've built a massive network of content producers, so I would be interested to see how subscribers and viewers hold up when looking at the whole network. More than that, though, is some sort of decline - or evolution - of gaming on youtube. Audience trends change over time, so it's understandable why MineCraft content dropped for some more reliable content, even if that meant fewer views but with more consistency. And, there has been an exodus of sorts to Twitch - again for the whole network. A single channel on a single platform has declined in viewership; it may be the flagship, but that does not necessarily reflect the state of the Yogscast as a whole.

So I feel I need to say something about this, because the video doesn't exactly give an accurate description on what's actually been going on. It also left out quite a lot of VERY important information, so let's address a few points. 1. Minecraft: So while you gave a pretty accurate description of their early days, it's very important to know that the vast majority of them decided to move onto other games, and while they still play minecraft occasionally at special events, most have decided to go onto other projects. To be fair, you also have to remember that the Yogs have been playing minecraft and filming since Minecraft went into survival multiplayer way back when, and a lot of them just got tired of playing minecraft every single day. I can't blame them on that one. 2. View Count: Ok, so this has multiple reasons why specific "view counts" have dropped, so we are going to have to go through these one at a time. (a) The biggest reason why they have less "views" on videos, is due to what a huge chunk of people have been doing: migrating to Twitch. A lot of people disliked the changes to KZbin policy, and while the Yogs still upload to their channels regularly, they are also livestreaming frequently. Every day, for the vast majority of the day, they are livestreaming on Twitch, and during the nights, running reruns that people can vote on what to watch. In addition, livestreaming allows them to host a variety of events while having better viewer interaction than simply uploading videos. Most of their livestreams are archived on a separate channel here on YT as well. (b) Another reason why view counts dropped is that as the Yogs got larger, more of their members decided to form their own channels, and started streaming on their. Their main channel eventually became just content from Simon and Lewis for the most part. So people that were fans of specific Yog members started watching other channels as well. 3. The "Fall" of Yogscast: So I have to point out that this is just factually incorrect. While yes, more direct views from the yogscast main youtube channel are less than when their minecraft main series, you are missing a lot of information. When the yogs first started, it was just a small core group that came from a guild in WoW, eventually leading into minecraft. Eventually, they got so large overall that the Yogscast became a company that was overseeing a large amount of members. The yogs moved into their office, eventually moving into a better office when the lease ran out on their original, and have a large amount of channels in the company. Now, they are able to take advantage of that, as there are professional editors, audio techs, and countless other staff that are employed by the Yogscast. 4. Yog-Members: So over the years, members have come and gone for a variety of reasons. Some have decided to pursue other projects, some left to do their own thing, and some were kicked out for various reasons. I won't go into the specifics on why every person left, that's all available online, but they also had large channels joining too. Members like Hat Films (now Hat Gaming, another former minecraft channel among other things), The Spiffing Brit, Pyrion Flax, and countless others that have their own channels even on twitch do cooperative events and still livestream to this day since they've joined the Yogscast, and their popularity is still increasing. So while yes, most of them have moved on from Minecraft, their popularity has definitely not fallen. Like all successful companies, they didn't want to get stuck into one thing, and to get the largest amount of viewers, decided to branch out. I think that if they had only stuck to minecraft, it would have probably killed the yogscast completely. Viewers do not just want just one thing overall, they want options and diversity in their videos. In addition, they swapped to a different platform that was able to accommodate them better for what they were trying to do, and since you are really only looking at youtube, you aren't able to see the full scope of the community. As a last little bit before I go, yes, I am a fan of many members of the Yogscast community, but I hope that I was able to explain this pretty factually and from an overall perspective of the company itself.

There was another thing to mention, and that was the dismissal of ThatMadCat The dude was a top moments organiser and helped the Yogs rekindle some popularity, but he was fired. Now, the official reason why is that he made some inappropriate jokes towards some people, however not only were his jokes way more tame than others the Yogs themselves have made, but a lot of them had their context removed A tonne of people, including myself, hypothesise that it was because he wanted to keep making videos that featured Sjin, Turps and other former Yogs in them despite Lewis’ orders. He even put it to a poll, with I think 60%+ saying you keep doing it, whilst the second top was “do what you wanted to do” A fair bit of the fanbase left since then. It’s such a shame really

Right a few things I need to point out: 1. The decline in Minecraft's popularity was abrupt because KZbin themselves nuked the ability to be recommended Minecraft content on the home page and unless you are subscribed to someone who regularly uploads Minecraft videos, you weren't going to see a growth on your channel from said content. Its only in the past year or so that Minecraft has picked up in popularity again but even so, you aren't going to find Minecraft being recommended on the trending tab basically ever again in the way it once was. 2. Lewis has been upfront and honest about his enjoyment to play games and sharing that with others for his entire duration of the Yogscast and I believe him because as much as Minecraft was being pushed when _EVERYONE_ played Minecraft, there were games that came up that still pulled the same number of views and did just as well AND everyone making the videos were also enjoying just as much. Therefore they began to branch out in ways they hadn't been doing during the Minecraft boom of KZbin. 3. Calling it a "fall" is misleading because the Yogscast is honestly doing better than they ever have been... but not in regards to KZbin views. Streaming, merchandise, events, meetups, public recognition on mainstream media, etc. If we are looking at KZbin then yes it has been a fall but at that point you aren't asking "The RISE And FALL Of The Yogscast", you are saying "The RISE And FALL of Minecraft channels on KZbin". 4. There's been enough random reasons why SoI isn't being finished that we can state one thing for sure; it has lost interest from the Yogscast themselves to finish it. You could make a new map rather easily, an entire community of Minecraft map makers would get together to do it for free in a heartbeat easily. Scripting and modding isn't a problem as they have folks programming stuff for them already in other games. The Yogscast has more members than ever so finding folks to play NPC roles isn't an issue either. The issue is that there's no interest in finishing something they don't care for anymore and it'll have a myriad of smaller and bigger reasons from folks leaving the Yogscast to Minecraft being more interesting as a normal modded and unmodded game now'a'days, folks expecting too much that they don't know if they can deliver, the number of incidents that they have been through in the past, etc. So... yah', your title is quite misleading because ... The Yogscast as a minecraft channel is effectively gone forever. The Yogscast as a network and mix of personalities and opportunities for sponsorships, for stuff like the Yogscast Jingle Jam, the ability to be creative and streaming etc. They are honestly doing amazingly well in short, better than they have ever done. (Oh and one more thing but this is more about the video itself rather than the content of the video... don't have a nice flow be abrupted as brutally as "Subscribe to my channel" in the middle of a talking point... utterly destroyed the pacing of the video.)

I remember watching this one clip, where lewis and ben were playing Xcom i believe and Lewis said something about how they [the yogscast] had their time and that unfortunately it isnt now Made me pretty sad because of how true it is

Great video. Very nostolgic and made me kind of sad remembering the good old days. I think for me, and I may be in the minority, it was them trying to expand the team so quickly and kind of hamfisting them into any and all videos that turned me way off a few years ago. Call it selfish, but I cherrished the main chanel as the lewis and Simon chanel. If I wanted to watch a bunch of random personalities that imo clashed with the LandS dynamic I'd go to their own respective channels. But now adays they've grown so large I don't even recognize the once humble but hilarious duo that many fell in love with. Also it doesn't help seeing veterans like turps and sjin ousted abruptly... Regardless the reasons. I'm quite happy for them and their apparent success as twitch streamers, but I can't help but feel like they left their old audience behind for a younger generation which is more stream interaction driven than long form video.

This is so nostalgic, I remember buying Minecraft Pocket Edition in 2011 and watching these guys. Then I got Java for PC in 2013.

Stuck on a paltry 7+ million subscribers?!!!! I guess for some the fall from Mount Everest to K2 must be truly devastating!

When I was younger, i literally dreamed of joining the yogscast i felt that was my absolute dream to be a part of the yogscast, it truly truly breaks my heart to see it fall

They're still doing quite well on twitch and the jingle jam is always enjoyable. A lot of people say they fell but imo they just found stability, which something many viral youtubers will never achieve (they're still around and profitable with many employees so they haven't failed)

"there videos in 2011 have more views then now on 2020" ya obviously it's been uploaded for about 9 years so it'd obviously get more views???? Did we forget common sense

The abrupt end of Shadow of Israphel was explained in the 2019 Jingle Jam. Long story short from what I remember, they planned to start the next episode with an animation but there was issues between the Yogscast and the animator thus the plans were never put through. I'm sure the unfinished animation was reuploaded onto KZbin somewhere since Lewis did show it off.

The Yogscast is why I love Dwarfs in fantasy so much. I even modeled my first dnd character after Simon and it had been a few years since I had last watched them at that point.
