Agreed, the role of advisors can only be overlooked, but not denied. I remember in early 2020, during covid-outbreak, my portfolio worth around 300k took a slight fall, apparently due to the pandemic crash, at once I consulted an advisor in order to avoid panic-selling. As of today, my account has yielded big fat yields, and leverages on 7-figure, only cos I delegate my excesses right.

I started using Uber because it was cheaper than a taxi. That is no longer the case. I started staying at Airbnbs because they were cheaper than staying at a hotel. That is no longer the case. Like so many Internet-based companies, Airbnb started out as a well-meaning, less-expensive alternative for the little guy to the behemoth corporate chains.....then people started getting greedy. ☹💲💲💲

It's probably not that the founders got greedy. It's probably that more people need a slice of the pie. Venture capitalists need their return on investment. They basically have to move like a big business once they become a big business.

Amen. I used to LOVE the variety offered by airbnb whether you wanted something simple and cheap or more luxurious... Either way, you could find a seriously nice stay for a bargan. Now, even the crappiest, dingiest stays are pricier than hotel rooms, because everyday hosts are now all competing with these monopolies. It's clear that the "policies" now are also geared in favor of monopolies aka it's increasingly difficult for hosts to be able to meet regulations and still make a profit. There's mistrust on both ends now, though and it really sucks. I miss when people could just be good guests and use the honor system. Both guests and hosts should just pass a basic background check and have the reviews take it from there.

It was so short it’s like saying that a movie is good based off the trailer. It is definitely hard to save for retirement. What I have found to be the best solution is to put a portion of any raises you get towards retirement and have it auto deducted. I work for a government agency, so I get a pension, which is super nice. But we also get a 457b, basically a public employee version of a 401k. I contribute a portion of each paycheck to my Roth 457b. I get 2 raises per year, a performance raise and a Cost of Living raise. I always put my entire Cost of Living raise towards my Roth contribution, so my monthly contribution goes up by about $100 per month every year. Doesn’t sound like a lot, but over 30 years my account should be substantial. Combined with my pension, which replaces 50% of my final salary, I should be fine when I retire.

In Kenya where I live, Airbnb are just doing fine, first they are still wayyyy more cheaper than hotels with the same level of service, secondly there are no homeowner accociation here for flats where most Airbnb are. Third, it doesn't make sense for landlords to get in the business because of the risk (most landlords also own multiple appartments and managing them would be a hustle since they need a personal touch). And with that there haven't been enough people complaining therefore no serious regulation has been proposed. Actually, in my experience the people who complain the most about Airbnb here are the hosts.

In kenya I'm guessing they don't have massive real estate corporations buying up every scrap of property in the country for three times its value either.

I imagine any Hotel in Kenya has to be a pretty luxurious one to attract foreigners. And I imagine Kenya is not at the stage of attracting budget travelers. All their guests are probably industrialist and high finance investors who want to stay somewhere nice.

Started retirement savings at 40 on a less than average income. Just retired at 68. I made it work only because I was very frugal and never tried to live a middle-class life. Never owned a house, always drove used hondas. I do question my choices - could have enjoyed life and traveled more when young because I’m not in a good condition to do it now.

Airbnb is just another version of the original bed & breakfasts in Europe. People started renting out a bedroom in their home and offered breakfast. Over the years it became a regulated industry and has been quite successful. I would never rent through Airbnb. There is too much of a chance that I will be ripped off as there are too many scammers involved and way too many bad properties. It’s just too unregulated.

Air bnb will be fine. This is the era of clown corpos because people are selfish, and Airbnb simply stretched itself too far. All this is is a correction in the market. There will still be plenty of people wanting an Airbnb in some county that doesn't gaf about housing prices being gouged.

Why save for a future that may not exist by the time you get there?
@chocolatethunder192Ай бұрын
Because for most people, there is a future. We see a lot of folks who didn't save and they're in bad shape. Companies are barely interested in hiring people over age 35 - over retirement age is less likely. Most people have to stop working earlier than planned due to age-related health problems. The government isn't going to be much help, either. If you save and there's no future, the worse that can happen is you have money to pass on to your loved ones or donate.

@doeixoАй бұрын
What you explain around 5:30, too many airbnbs making it difficult to find renters for every one of them and thus making long term rental more appealing for hosts is a beautiful example of the market regulating itself, thats not a shitstorm nor a collapse. The amount of demand is still there, the least attractive airbnbs will disappear and just the right amount stay
@MbisonBalrogАй бұрын
The places already zoned for bed and breakfast, and short term stays is already enough to fill the market. Those places always had avenues for advertising and bringing in guests. AirBnB is for people to make money illegally by breaking local ordinances.

Why anyone want a home away from home while on vacay unless it is an extended stay or in other words similar to a normal one year lease? If the market is some time frame less than one year like a few months; well that market is rather small. Airbnb is mostly used for very short term stays though. Who wants to do their own cooking, cleaning if you take a short leisure vacay?
