One thing maybe worth mentioning is that when Leeds were relegated to League One in 2007, they began the following season with -15 points, but they went on to reach the playoff final, only to lose to Doncaster.

I loved the music too. And the end was legendary by Tifo, especially following Leeds' promotion: "So Leeds United, still a big city football club of great traditions, play on in the Championship. In the Elland Road ground that they do not own, their large body of long-suffering supporters wondering how it all went so wrong, still singing of the glory days of old".

Along with Manchester United as well. They've essentially become global icons. A lot of science goes into the sport now a days so mistakes similar to Leeds virtually seem impossible to happen. Plus all these massive investors are only investing in the teams cause they know theres a guarantee to make more money.

Madrid have apperently equalled out their debt. And a few years back they had financial issues, but perez saved that. About the debt: Debt itself isnt a problem if you can pay it off, which they can. And about being too big to go down, both clubs are really close to their ''state'' (catalunya isnt independent but still). So if they have issues they can get help from there. Apperently madrid sold land to spain for an overprice and bought other land for underprice, but thats all romours, never seen any real news site say it

the thing is even though their debt is often huge , their income is huge as well. they get regular injections from sponsorships ( take man utd's massive recent deal ) , tons in tv rights ect . They generally have decades to pay off loans , and their constant success and income allows them to keep the club running.

Great video. Although when explaining how strong they were between 1965-1975, it may have helped to point out that in 10 years, they never finished outside the top 4 and were runners up 5 times in the league (often as a result of absurd decisions and/or ridiculous fixture congestion right at the end of the season.) Also they made the champions cup final in 1973 against AC Milan and that was way way waay more dodgy (seriously watch it it's unbelievable) than in 1975. I think it was proved in like 2003 that it was fixed and there was an (obviously useless) appeal for a rematch. But I'm not bitter . . Honest .

Cellino has accomplished a great deal that goes unmentioned here. I think it's an appropriate time to bring that to light, as we have made progress on the pitch, table, and in the books. As supporters, we owe it to the club to be positive.

Jon Hoff Sorry pal but you are way off. Cellino got lucky with Monk. First he went for 2 league 1 managers mk dons Robinson and the Bristol manager both of whom rejected us! Regards the finances he slashed operating costs by stupid things like no water in the TA pool and cutting the kitchen staff so the players had to bring packed lunches. Also the debt has increased dramatically and we are still losing around 1m per month and we owe GFH around 18m. But if you want to praise old Massimer you crack on

Leeds were a powerhouse in the 1960’s-1970’s, and in the 1990’s-2001 Leeds were a top 4 club, just behind Arsenal and Man U. It is unfortunate and sad to see this great club get treated poorly due to corrupt owners. Leeds belong in the premier league

Going down to Leeds from Hamilton South Lanarkshire Scotland on Friday. Always been a Chelsea fan as far as English football clubs are concerned miss they old battles with Leeds United when they where in the Premiership it is so sad the state that Leeds United are in now honesty even though I am a Chelsea fan I never wanted Leeds United to get relegated from the Premiership it was a sad time for English football in my view Leeds United are a Northern Power house of the English game and should be in the Premiership. What a difference two years make!... I would have never thought that a Championship club would have the pull to land somebody like Bielsa. Based on the comings and goings, there still isn't much of a long-term stability at the club, but it takes only a year to make it alright, and the manager can add so much to that.

The Solo as a Leeds fan I don’t believe we’ll go up as the team over performed and the owner has stated the club will have a difficult summer transfer window. Luckily bielsa has stayed but our side is nowhere near as good as we think. We’ll just wait and see what happens and if Leeds can get into the promise land of English football.

Basically, leeds tried to do what man city and chelsea have done. But didn't have the funds to do it. So went down. Same went for Portsmouth post 2008. Money in football is needed, but has become far too decisive a variable in the fortunes of clubs and leagues. And it is killing the romance of the game. The romance that made us all football fans to begin with.

About that promising side in early 2000's, I might be wrong, but I read that they pretty much bankrolled the big transfers based on getting Champions League Football. So it worked as long as they got a Top four place, but a seriously risky gamble. Things started to go wrong when they finished 5th in 2001/2, so from that point on, they were in serious trouble financially, with an astronomical wage bill, and no Champions league money.

After brief flirtations with other clubs as a youth I supported Leeds United. However after frustration, constant consumption of their past rather than present & future, lust for past players (and various other acheing problems) I stopped. Distanced myself from the beautiful game. After constant closet fandom I tried to shut down whilst being a Leeds fan, I finally came out....... I am now a Manchester United fan. I'd love to see you tackle the debacle that is Coventry City. A mighty rise up through the leagues with the late great Jimmy Hill in the 1960's. Underdog FA Cup winners in 1987. 30 years (unbroken) in the top flight of English football. Currently, they sit bottom of the third tier, relegation a certainty, no stadium, plans to sell training ground for housing development, clueless faceless owners, I could go on. This time next year non league football looks a realistic probability. An appalling tragedy of football.

Must also remember that under O'Leary Leeds finished 4th,3rd,4th and 5th during his stay at Leeds. By todays standard thats Champions League qualification 3 seasons out of 4. What happened to Leeds was destiny, and the fall was hard.
