Hi guys, in this video essay I discuss the rise of A24 as a studio and how A24 movies became so well known and respected amongst young people on social media and season executives and creators in the film and tv industry. Also, I think we have a24 to thank for the tiktok main character trend.

Hi this was such a great video!! I just want to know what you think of A24 recently picking up the animated series called Hazbin Hotel? I'm a fan of the series and was really surprised that A24 was the studio that picked it up. I think this is their first animated series?

Wise Weirdo ooh yes I watched that one. I love Yara Shahidi but sadly in the books it’s said that she has much darker skin, I find all light or dark skinned actors beautiful and I’m light skinned myself but hollywood never uses dark skinned girls/women. This causing a problem for the viewers knowing well that they aren’t supposed to be light skinned. That’s why some actors like Zendaya turn down roles so more black queens can take the spot. One step at a time till we achieve our goals! ❤️

Moonlight was fantastic but I want to see more coming of age stories starring people of color who aren't living in the hood with absent fathers. I like how A24 doesn’t dumb things down to their audience. Every other movie either has to show the entire movie in the trailer so that the audience knows what they’re getting or they’ll have too much expositional dialogue almost to check that we’ve been listening. I'm in love with A24, it's come to the point where if I see the logo in the trailer, I'm in. -- I've never really been the "indie movie" type, especially being POC I found them hard to relate to. I think A24 really showed me a whole new world of what storytelling could be in movies. Eighth Grade has a special place in my heart, I wasn't expecting it to hit so close to home. I also love that they're starting to tell Asian-American stories like The Farewell (LOVE) and Minari (super excited for that one!) What you said about seeing the universality of a very specific story really hit the nail on the head. Thanks for the fresh bops! You should scratch that "if" off the playlist and switch it to "when." Anyway Amanda, you don't need me to tell you this, but keep doing what you're doing, because it's working.

The lighthouse to me is the most unique movie ever created, I watched it and couldn't believe, the film was shot with a vintage 1930's Baltar lens, and the film used a custom short pass filter to achieve that particular black and white effect. From the lighting to the camera work, the aspect ratio, exquisite work. The lighthouse was built from the ground up for the purposes of the move. And then the story, that god damn story, never before did a movie captivate me so much, whit its dialogue, acting the mystery....it was just superb !

this video essay is amazing, and i would like to humbly add my 2 cents. i think that there is also something to be said about the "indie" label for a24, as people are generally a lot keener on supporting indie studios than they are major ones. it's quite easy to forget though, that just because a24 is an independent company doesn't mean that they aren't a company, though for some reason the "indie" label seems to imply that they are more ethical/diverse than companies like Disney, and aren't as in it for the profit, though that may not always be the case. just because a company is small doesn't necessarily make it not for profit, but it does definitely work as a way of getting attention from people who tend to buck more traditional movie studios/companies (like me lol). it does make you wonder at what point a24 will get big enough where it won't be considered indie anymore?
@sumeya1923
@sumeya1923 3 жыл бұрын
I agree .Even when it gets pretty big ...i will call it indie because of the aesthetics, the shots,the storyline, the acting and the hard work that every single person puts in to make the films amazing etc ...no company is really doing it like them so I guess it will a ways be considered indie. Indie just means independent and it’s a independent film company so it will always be called indie.

Love love love these video essays!!! Just leaving this here for myself because you managed to verbalise perfectly something that I think can be applied to several mediums, and why audiences connect with some pieces of art better than others 'A24 execs are able to see the universality within the specificity of a story which is, essentially, the crux of authenticity. Anyone can recognise but it can only be manufactured from real personal experience'

i truly cant remember a time where i watched a "lengthy" video like this the whole way through while having little to no knowledge on or interest in the topic of the video. i seriously know nothing about the film industry, so perhaps all this new info just has me excited/surprised, but i really think it's the way you articulate and show your personality here and there throughout the video that pulls your audience in. and imo thats something rare to find on this platform. thanks for all this info :)

what you said about a24 seeing the universality within specificity and that intuition being the crux of their success was so brilliant and eloquently stated. and spot-on, too - when watching their movies, i've felt the essence of how you explained their impact, but hadn't put it into those words. really nice video

It's so interesting you chose to talk about this topic! lately i've been watching a lot of movies of this studio (not on purpose, out of pure coincidence, you could say i was a basic indie lover - if it's still considered indie ), last night i watched the lighthouse and it was horryingly pleasing lol

Omg same. I’ve been watching a lot of indie ( anything that’s not part of a huge production company or 100% mainstream I consider indie ) and I noticed they all had A24 on their movie posters! I watched “The Florida Project” and loved it and just found out it was A24. They’re really putting out quality movies

But alas, i’m still waiting for my emails to be replied 😩😂. Thanks so much for posting this video! It seems weird to say, but it’s like you read my mind about A24 haha. The first time my friend and I watched Midsommar it was in the height of the summer, blazing heat and the theatre we went to see it at had their air-con under maintenance. We were sat down for like 2 mins before we started sweating uncontrollably and contemplated leaving but we stayed because we loved Hereditary/Ari/A24, it became our favourite movie, we even went to London to watch the directors cut because no cinema near us was playing it. A24 has the magic for sure.

Rafeeat Bishi as a black person although I see why it’s so controversial, it’s still really impactful and incredible, especially as its a movie that stars black people but doesn’t necessarily make it about race

@@dreamingofthemoon unfortunately, the struggles were very surface level and a lot of people don't realize how the depictions are harmful. I suggest you read this review. Not saying you need to hate the movie!!! But the racial politics are important to critique letterboxd.com/kevinyang/film/waves-2019/ Edit: black lead movies also don't equal greatness especially if it's told through the lens of a white director. If you search up other reviews for the movie you'd understand why it's an issue!
