The future of the China-US relations depends on whether the United States can accept China's peaceful rise and whether it recognizes that the Chinese people have the right to pursue a better life.

The past 20 years have been a difficult time for the US. The Trump experience was an abberation. Democracy provides the opportunity to refresh. History must be revealed by historians. What was going on in Beijing in My at and June 1989? It is disgraceful to call it the "June 4th incident". Why is the CCP afraid of the whole truth?

I think it's almost irrelevant if China achieves a kind of democracy that suits the rest of the world, if it works for them and the majority of people are content what more can you ask for? I live in a democracy and it doesn't really make much difference in my day-to-day life as long as no one's trying to arrest me for no reason, and I have food and employment, and I'm free to walk around travel as I please etc.. democracy is just a word westerners love to through around, just like "human rights", but wetern nations do not walk the talk, they prefer to dominate and exploit, history proves this.

The soft-power of China is based on ancient philosophy and concept of the martial art, Tai Chi using the inner strengths of humans to repel the physical aggression of the enemy. Tai Chi took decades and centuries to develop and advance, it’s therefore not easy for the West to understand and appreciate. To describe China as being ‘assertive’, ‘aggressive’ is a misfit of description and shows its lack of understanding of the strengths of China with centuries of civilisation, history and culture. Suffice to say, China didn’t exist just in the last 30-40 years.

I think the West has to accept there are more than one way to achieve any goal. It is not workable if the West keeps insisting that the way democracy has to be defined by the West standard. In fact, there is some degree of selfishness without the consideration of others, such as does my freedom interferes with or takes away the freedom of others.

why are discussions about china are always headed by westerners? let's have more Chinese China experts with varied points of view.
@yl69083 жыл бұрын
2006? That was an eon ago. Given the rapid change in China, I hardly think a talk happened in 2016 was relevant anymore.
@marlyntyzzer39193 жыл бұрын
Don't you see that what they discussed is still relevant today? The West still do not understand China. The Chinese know more about the West than the other way around, that is why it would be great if more students from the West would go to study in China. Also, the West wanted and expected China to copy them and their democratic systems of government blindly, but when China chooses to be themselves by following their own culture, circumstances and characteristics, the West just cannot accept it. That's the huge problem!?! This video has voices of pragmatism and moderation. Since then, the rhetoric has been more war-like with lots of fake news and exaggerations perpetuated by mainstream western media. The world wants Peace, Not War!!!

Taiwan is an independent country and CCP has no business to interfere in the internal matters of Taiwan. The PRC always say, that Taiwan is part of China, Tibet is part of China, Xinjiang is part of China and Hong Kong is part of China, but when it comes to the origin of CCP Wuhan Virus, it is not part of China. What is missing here is the honesty and what we see is CCP‘s naked LIE.

I have all scholar degrees "required" and worked hands-on in 6 coutries, being 1/2 decade in Asia, including China and Japan. And one problem I see all the time, as I discussed recently in a Council of Foreign Relations group, is that despite of their high professional status (Ambassadors, int'l relations experts, Havard wizards etc), they never spent a long time (>1 year) totally immersed in the local communities. Even lining in foreign countries, they still carry their original culture bias, do not detach (forget) their "birth-right" and keep looking things based on those root-knowledges. Am sure that many of the world's conflicts are a result (if not intentional) of this conditioned narrow view. This understanding can NOT be acquired thru books or in the prestigious benches of a Harvard-like University. If am wrong, why despite of the ever-expanding academic knowledge and tools (that are usef by built Goverments), the world is more polarized and involved in all sorts of disputes, as ever? A very high price to pay for not having a global harmony.

U.S. is not too "big" to learn other countries' culture. Americans by and large, in my view as an Cultural Anthropology reader, are simply ignorance and "big" only in perspective! I recalled one of the post graduate students who said that "Bali" is located somewhere in Caribbean? With utmost due respect to Rhode Scholars in U.S. many of them, of course, know all the answers BUT primarily from the western socio-political points of view which often misjudged the China's thousand years of culture. China and her people never consider the state authority from its culture. Martin Jacques said it well that China is cultural state and has never been a "Nation State". Hence, many western politician or so-called statemen like Machiavelli et al thatafter Europe had adopted the separation of church and state authority can only focus on China at the destruction
@wzhang3183 жыл бұрын
I am little disappoint on this conference of Harvard Kennedy. I don't see there are couple of challengeable questions and sharp answers. All professors, students and Scholars provide general and "politically fair" answers. If my English is fluent and good enough, I can provide better answers than they do.
