We will explore the chinese aviation market and the four chinese jets that will rival Boeing and Airbus for the next century, everything from small regional jets to lumbering craft to rival the Boeing 747 and Airbus A380. What are they? what will they be like to fly? And why the west hates them. Let's crack open this fortune cookie and find out.
The aviation market is made up of two big players - Boeing and Airbus (and embraer) but soon, there might be a third player who rivals the two friendly giants - COMAC.
COMAC, which stands for the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China. Essentially China's economy is snowballing so much that they need to ensure they have their own aviation industry to keep up with demand.
China plans to build an extra 200 airports over the next 15 years to cope with the relentless growth spurt. And only last year, Boeing's own Commercial Market Outlook projections said China would require 8,090 new passenger aircraft plus related aviation services over 20 years -- a market worth $2.9 trillion.
What does COMAC stand for?
There is the ARJ21, which stands for Advanced Regional Jet, nicknamed the Soaring Phoenix.
Then there are the three brothers, the C919, C929, and the C939. C stands for COMAC, 9 for forever and the last two digits for how many tens of passengers it can carry.
The ARJ21 had its first flight in 2008, but it took seven years to be delivered to customers. 32 are currently flying across China, and there are 208 reported orders. There are two versions, a 90 seater -700 and a 105 seater -900. The base model only has a range of 1,200 nautical miles, which is the equivalent of the first Boeing 737 from 1967, but there is an optional upgrade to boost it up to 2000 nautical miles. While small, as its designed for regional travel in china, it doesn't require to the distance-Thats for the next series.
Next up, we have the C919, equivalent to the Boeing 737 and the Airbus A320. there is only one version, that can seat 168 passengers in an all economy layout, or 158 with business class. Its has simular engines as the Boeing 737 MAX series which allow it a range of 2,200 nautical miles. Again, there is an extended range version that can push this up to 3,000. This aircraft will be popular and has already secured 1008 orders.
Side note: orders for these aircraft need to be taken with a grain of salt, as they are nearly all from either Chinese carriers who owned by the government and encourage to purchase locally made aircraft, nations in developing regions and engine manufacturers like GE. No western nation has shown interest in them yet - but we will get to that later.
Next up we have the C929 or the Craic CR929. It has two names because of its a joint venture between COMAC and the Russian United Aircraft Corporation, or UAC. This aircraft is an attempt to replicate the success of the Airbus A330 and Boeing 787.
The aircraft would fit up to 291 passengers with two classes or up to 440 with a single seating class. Or... it could even fit all of my current subscribers! If you want to get on the Chinese plane, hit that subscribe button down below and i'll be sure to send you a ticket! There will be three versions of the plane, progressively offering more seats for less range.
Speaking of, It will have a range of 6,480 nautical miles, 12,000km, and the two partners believe that there will sell 1000 of these aircraft over the next 10 years for a total investment of 13-20 billion.
Now for the last and most significant of the aircraft, the C939. Now very little is known about this aircraft, or if it even is built in the age of Boeing 747 retirings and Airbus A380 production line shutting down.
What we do know is that the C939 will seat over 400 passengers in a twin-engine, twin aisle configuration, much like the biggest 777X and the Airbus A350. It could even be expanded to the same size as the 747, although at this point all these ideas are irrelevant, because outside of China they may find few customers.
Part of the reason why Chinese made aircraft are not popular is because of the engines. at the moment, China can't produce the same level of quality jet engines - for all of these projects they will need GE, Rolls Royce or others to power their aircraft. And it doesn't just stop with the engines.
Plus, if your an airline and you ordered the aircraft - how will you maintain them? China doesn't have a worldwide spanning maintenance and parts network that airlines can easily access. Unless you on the border of the nation, it will be very expensive to operate these aircraft, and likely you will suffer the same fate as Interjet and their Russian made regional jets.
Thanks so much for watching!

And the airplane falls apart after 8 months since it is made in China. Window is taped with duct tape, and engine oscillates violently. Flight computers crash running Windows 95. The main reason China is developing their own planes is to keep up with Chinese demand for airliners. There is too much demand. China cannot wait years for an airliner. Also old planes have to be replaced with new planes because of air safety regulations. So there is a huge growing backlog for airplanes

Am working in airworthiness certification in France. Can confirm certification by Europe's EASA and US' FAA won't be easy for the Comac aircrafts. On the other end, they do have strong support of the Chinese airworthiness authority (CAAC), but tbh it's the same for Airbus and Boeing with their local authorities. But CAAC is also acquiring information from Airbus and Boeing by using political pressure : they were asking to see more technical data than necessary to validate A320neo certification, and threatening "otherwise reviewing the info to publish the certificate miiiight take a bit more time" [insert South-Park "we're sorry" meme]. As most of Airbus and Boeing's market openings come from Chinese companies, delaying certification will delay delivery of airplanes and thus provoke commercial & logistical issues.

I’m a Chinese, and I wish I could have the same amount of faith and trust in products Chinese made. I am just unable to do it, cos I know the Chinese government spent more on PR for its project and product other than R&D. Things are made in China are just poor quality. I would rather taking a B737max any day than an aeroplane built by China. Sure, you might think China would take the lessons from the failure of US. The reality is the technique of building this aeroplane is from the US with some adaption. There is simply no R&D spent in terms of time and money. The failure with B737 Max is the cause that we know, but if there is a failure in an aeroplane Chinese built, we probably could never find out, plus the cover up is the most advanced technique China are good at only. Especially considering how badly Boeing is doing with their new airplanes. 787 program was supposed to be 6 billion but turned out way late and 32 billion. 787 had so many production problems (especially out of the NC plant and they close the Everett production). and the 777x and 737 max have been so messed up, and such horrible decisions on the 737 max for expediency, and outright lies. Boeing has changed so much....become like McD. With such a massive market internally, and if China can create a good economical plane, they can get production up with production for internal use, and this can demonstrate that the plane does the job very well and has excellent safety record...this will make it hard for US and EU not to certify them. It also means that China will understand the support needs, and it will be much easier to expand support worldwide. I suspect this is how Airbus became successful...state airlines were encouraged to use AIrbus, and it became hard for the US not to certify the Airbus given its record.

Being an aviation student I believe China is missing the big picture. Small regional jets are dominated by embraer, and bombardier. Boeing and airbus will handle the 737 seating capacity as well as the 290+. What is needed is a middle market hey such as the 767 which seats anywhere from 210-290 passengers. That’s the biggest segment that if full filled it would mean western orders and European orders

In real life, Chinese aviation is starting to compete with companies that have huge factories already built and paid off, with many years of experience, and worldwide logistical operations and thousands of already trained and well-supplied maintenance people throughout the world. Producing a new model of aircraft involves huge investments that Airbus and Boeing have already made.

True, building an airliner is complicated, with strict safety standards, certifications, transparency, WTO watchdogs, etc... Even Boeing has hundreds of subcontractors in Europe, Japan, Korea and the UK. And same for Airbus which is consortium of companies in Europe, with industry partners in US, Japan and Korea. No one country can build one by itself...you need cooperation with partners. Building an aviation industry in the face of sanctions would be hard to impossible. In building the C919, China had to do a lot of hacking, cyber intrusion, theft as well as HUMINT operations - A report published shows how this coordinated multi-year hacking campaign systematically went after the foreign companies that supplied components for the C919 airplane. - to acquire the needed intellectual property to manufacture all of the C919's components inside China.. As usual they need to steal trade secrets...could this affect international certifications.. and transparency.

If they are true I can’t see this company being around for long due to the aviation industry being a very expensive industry to be in. But time will tell. @@reyeswang production doesn't mean that the planes have chinese involvements in the design. unless china actually helped in some way of designing the plane they are only producers of a foreign product.
