Afghanistan seemed to be shaping up to be a pretty decent and progressive place had it not been for the PDPA's really harsh crushing of opposition. Those who made up the Mujaheddin would still be angry at the PDPA for the way that they arrested and killed the priests in the villages. Also you can't really dismiss someone as a conspiracy theorist if they are just pointing out cultural prejudices and not an actual conspiracy (a group who physically conspires to do something).
