On February 24th, Russia launched a military invasion of Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin called it a “special military operation,” but the scale of the attack shows this is a full-scale war that has already caused more than 100 casualties and forced more than half a million Ukrainians to flee their homes.
Ukraine and Russia’s conflict goes back to 2014, when Russia invaded and annexed Crimea and Russian-backed separatist forces took over parts of southeastern Ukraine’s Donbas region. But to understand the full context behind the invasion, it’s important to go even farther back, to the time when Europe’s current-day divisions began, and see how that shaped Europe’s power balance today.
To understand the current conflict’s history in less than 10 minutes, watch the video above.

Correction, March 3, 2022: A previous version of this video stated that NATO was brought to Russia's borders for the “first time” in 2004 when Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania joined NATO. That was incorrect because Norway shares a border with Russia and has been in NATO since 1949. We’ve corrected that line at 3:36 to emphasize the importance of former Soviet republics on Russia's border joining NATO for the first time. We've also clarified that this is one of Europe's largest wars since World War II. We value your feedback in the comments and appreciate you bringing these points to our attention.

Correction: At 3:36, we say that NATO was brought to Russia's borders for the first time in 2004 when Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania joined NATO. That's inaccurate because Norway shares a small border with Russia and has been in NATO since 1949. But 2004 is significant because it marked the first time that former Soviet republics on Russia's border joined NATO.

It’s all a lie. Kyiv, Ukraine is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, combining old and new world architecture. There’s more money there than God. I got kicked off of Instagram four times for exposing the truth. They are laundering money, hiding bio weapon labs and engaging in human trafficking across Europe. That isn’t even Vladimir Putin anymore. He disappeared in 2015. That dude is just an actor playing his part. This is a movie. 🍿

BTW, this may be a small point, to speed up the video a bit, but here's something many in the west don't get about the 2013 protests: when Yanukovich declined to sign the EU deal, maybe a 1000 people (mostly students) took to the streets. when he brutally cracked down on those students, that's when hundreds of thousands joined them, this time demanding he leave the post. the display of dictatorship was the real reason for the scale of the protest, not so much the EU deal.

Wish there were discussion of the pipelines running to Europe from Russia through Ukraine and how that plays into it as well as gas reserves off of crimea. Energy seems like an important part of the story for why Russia cares about Ukraine beyond just the vague threat of encirclement by NATO.
@ardiansyahnugraha9688

Yes, RealLifeLore YT Channel discussed it. Few points: one of the biggest gas reserve is in Crimea so Russia tried to take control in afraid Ukraine will become rival, Ukraine tariff on gas pipeline to Russia so the reason to built NordStream, Oil reserve near Donbass Region, another oil reserve in Western Ukraine near Transnistria (Putin backed regime in Moldova). And water shortage in Crimea.
@HaruSoul
@HaruSoul 2 жыл бұрын
Russia will have multiple pipelines operational in the next few years without going through Ukraine (assuming they continue building them), the gas reserves are the bigger story. Oil/gas makes up like 1/3 of Russias GDP, if they can afford to take out a potential competitor before they join NATO it makes sense to do so.

Putin signed "Minsk agreements 2014" (to end of war and donbass must be Ukraine) and waited peace 8 years. What about this: - Merkel (German president): The Minsk agreements were needed only to "give Ukraine time" This allowed the country to become stronger in it`s future confrontation with Russia. - Hollande (French president): Yes, Angela Merkel was right about that. - Poroshenko (Ukraine president): This document gave Ukraine eight years to build an army, economy and a global pro-Ukrainian anti-Putin coalition. - Zelensky (Ukraine president): As for Minsk as a whole, we will not be able to implement it like that (7 february 2022). Summary, They (Germany, French, Ukraine) did`t want peace, they built army for future confrontation with Russia. - Mykhailo Zabrodsky is a former commander of Ukraine’s air-assault forces says: “Crimea is not only possible, it was something that was being prepared for 2023”. Summary: Ukrainian army wanted attack region of Russia. - Ukraine attack DNR and LNR (Donbass) since 17 february 2022. You can see report osce. They are recorded more 10 000 ceasefire violations. What I really fear is Putins stance on sovereignty of other countries. In his speech last monday (21.2.2022) he said that Ukraine were a country by the grace of Russia and lost their sovereignty due to corruption. If a country loses his subject-status in international law (kinda the "countryness") there is no more protection by the norms of international law in particular the prohibition of force layed down in Art. 2 UN-Charta. This stance of Putin on sovereignty has absolutely no basis in present international law. If this may become the new standard no small nation is safe anymore and we re back in a neo-imperialist system. This is truely shocking ! :/

In ussr their ruler Stalin make holodomor (famine) to stop ukrainian protests and millions of ukrainians was died from famine what they make, taking all the grain from those who grew it. in the late USSR there were many repressions and after Stalin, if you spoke about the ukrainian position, you were sent to prison in Siberia. I have to say something about the notion that this is the biggest war since the WWII, which has been said in many news services on TV and across KZbin. What about the wars between 1991 and 2001 in the former Yuoguslavia? Weren't they big and bad enough to be deemed as a worthy reference? Yes, it wasn't an attack from foreign countries, but it did change the map of Europe, then several new states camed out from those wars.

@J Without wanting to downplaying what happened in Yugoslavia, I think this is a completely different order of magnitude. Not so much in casualties as we speak, but because of the number of countries impacted and the economic warfare that is currently happening. The yugoslavia war was messy and horrible for the people involved, but it was contained (and technically a civil war). This is an invasion with the potential to move into WW3. I am aware that such statements are technical and perhaps semantic and thus do no justice to the (former) Yugoslavians, but it is why people see this as a bigger war than what happened in Yugoslavia.

As we know now? there is a "nuclear waste problem" due to modifications that was made by WestinghouseElectric Co. (US) They made modifications on reactors, old soviet reactors, Zaporyzhe (Запорожье) power plant and I believe they made more on other ucranian power stations, near the station there are a lot of capacities with nuclear waste, In realyty of war it may cause problems like Chernobyl. In case ose of Zaporizhye, all nuclear waste stands to close to the water, drinking water, that may cause affect at whole region.

In 2012 they found 3 billion cubic meters of oil/natural gas in the Black Sea (Ukraine) they do not have the resources to refine it and if they could get allegiance with NATO/UN they could use that partnership with their drilling/refining companies to become a profitable and high gdp country while using Russian pipelines that go to Eastern Europe already. “Coincidentally” if they could get NATO to get involved in a “conflict” NATO would push its lines up into Russian occupied territory and they would gain full control over the region ontop of standing to gain exponential profit proceeds at the cost of arising internal conflict to get NATO/UN involved.
