My mom grew up on a US military base in Japan, according to her the Americans stationed there would often play either baseball or rugby with the local Japanese. There were certain rules for Americans when it came to rugby though, because they often outweighed the Japanese, and Americans tend to not know their own strength, there was a weight cap for the Americans to ensure that they didn't accidentally kill anyone. The cap was no American rugby player could be more than 140 l.b.s. or 63.5 KG.

well actually, not too far back before kids rugby was divided by age ( U19, U18....U10,U9 etc) the divisions were by weight category (seniors, inters.... juniors, bantams).....within reasonable limits of course - this would ensure every school kid would have an opportunity to play ....but yeah, I think a lot of viewers will resonant with your comments

@@ClutchRugbyXV the weight thing was very jarring for the Americans, sometimes they would be penalized with having less players on the field or certain American players not being allowed to tackle at all. My mom said it was rare that Americans and Japanese played with an equal number of players for a rugby game and by the official rules. Both parties played plenty of baseball against each other though with no handicaps for anyone.

@@theawesomeman9821 Clutch values the knowledgeable rugby fan, so we would like you to subscribe if you haven't already. I was in a rugby school and their history-they had weight divisions before it was age groups. So that's kind of how I knew about it. So they said, before the game, the official would bring a scale and everyone would weigh in and then they're either in or they're over the limit, they can't play. So everybody was watching their weight because they wanted to be the biggest possible but still qualify, otherwise you end up the smallest guy in the next weight up category. And you have coaches from both teams watching each others scale with eagle eyes. 😂 Thanks for sharing Sir, super interesting stuff. We all love the game and the history of the game! 👍 🎓
