I think a lot of Willis’s success will come from the scenario he’s drafted in. If a coaching staff like the Steelers’ draft him, I can see him succeed because they have the history of developing an unconventional QB with a lot of talent and a big arm (Ben). It truly depends on where he goes
@zzdoodzz2 жыл бұрын
You could say this is the case for most top QB prospects, they have lots of talent that can be molded but need to have a good place to go to. For example, this why everyone still thinks Trevor Lawrence will be just fine once he gets good staff around him. I do like your idea of the Steelers, they typically are a team that shows the value of committing long term and will be patient.

Freeze made his name as an OC-minded HC by simplifying his O to make the game as easy as possible on his QB. His QB reads are all about putting defenders in conflict, so in reality, the reads can't get much simpler than that. If they're leveling a CB, well, he can't be in two places at once, so you throw the ball where he isn't. Willis' most troublesome games this year came against Ole Miss and Louisiana. Against DJ Durkin's D, he was pounded on all game, when they had nine sacks and 11 TFLs. Of course, not all of that was Willis' fault, but any coach knows, while the OL might get often blamed, it's not nearly their fault as much as they're blamed. Against Louisiana, Napier coached under Saban for four or five seasons, so you know where he learned how to choose his DCs. They sacked him seven times and had eight TFLs. When a QB is prone to run as much as Willis is, and a D is living in your backfield, it's not a good combination. Lots of guys have powerful arms, but really the League throw is the 35-yard out from across the field. Any QB who can make that throw consistently has the arm to play in the League, so a guy throwing a ball 65 or 70 yards isn't really necessary. I think that the biggest problem w/ Willis will be three-fold: First, he's coming from a league, where the game is played at a much slower pace than the highest levels of D1, let alone in the League. Second, when he played against the two teams I mentioned, he saw more exotic looks that he'll see plenty of in the League, and he rarely knew what he was looking at. Finally, he's going to have to learn an O from scratch b/c of the watered-down O Freeze had him running at Liberty. Freeze really did him no favors, so Willis will enter the League needing to learn from the ground up. As you said, he's a really smart kid, and he's incredibly gifted athletically. There will always be some team that says, "We can coach him up," so he'll get his chance. Here's hoping that he picks up what he needs to quickly.
@AlexRollinsNFL2 жыл бұрын
Beautiful comment, I definitely agree with your 3 statements. I didn't think the speed of the game was an issue for him, but as stated he at times struggles with processing. I mentioned he doesn't have a lot of "quarterbacky" throws and that's definitely a concern- you would have liked to see him layer the ball over 2nd level defenders but there's rarely any examples of that. I believe Freeze had a ton of curls and stationary routes cause he believed Willis had to see something open before he threw it. There were barely any crossers or overs which we see a ton in the NFL
@jmg9992 жыл бұрын
@@AlexRollinsNFL If Freeze really wanted to get Willis more comfortable throwing over the middle, he could've instituted that double slant route combo that 'Bama runs on their replace RPOs. I believe that they call it Lion. They run it while employing counter, but w/ Willis, they could even run a sort of inverted veer concept w/ it. The problem is, I don't know if he gets the ball out in time to make those quick throws w/ the minimal separation between the receiver and DB. That's where I think that the speed of the game might hurt him at the next level. Trying to learn this from a baseline while threading a needle is exceedingly difficult.
@dogwater42452 жыл бұрын
what a great comment. see you didn’t say anything that was hurtful and unnecessary player and gave good criticism about him as a player. @char63642 жыл бұрын
Appreciate your breakdown on Willis because there's a lot of wildly conflicting opinions on him lol! I think receiver talent - or lack thereof - plays a major role in QB evaluation and is often times ignored because everybody wants to (understandably) hone in on the QB's individual traits, which is a huge part of the process, of course, but not everything. A lot of analysts in the 2020 pre-draft period completely overlooked how Justin Herbert didn't have any NFL-calibre skill players around him, while Burrow and Tua both had multiple 1st-round receivers at their disposal and so many network analysts and draftniks seemed to ignore this context when comparing their raw numbers. That Herbert's numbers were in any way comparable to the other two's - despite having none of the same support - should've been a massive point in his favour but it wasn't for most people. Not exactly a revolutionary observation, I know but it always surprises me how little emphasis people place on it compared to a QB's 'intangibles' and deep-ball distance. I think people try so hard to make QB-drafting such an exact science that they end up over-thinking things and ignoring obvious points staring them straight in the face. The talent gap at college is so much bigger than in the NFL because you have some players projected to be future superstars vs people who have little-to-no chance of making it at a professional level, yet people too often times treat it like the NFL where most teams have similar levels of talent and therefore most failures are chiefly down to the QB themselves. People act like Herbert magically became a different QB in a matter of months, when a lot of his college 'mistakes' in his senior year will have been down to simply not being able to trust his receiving corps to do the job asked of them - that lack of trust absolutely affects a QB's accuracy, timing, decision-making etc. on the field. That's not to say every 'project' guy like Josh Allen or potentially Malik Willis is going to be a success, but I don't think it's a coincidence that the NFL is trending more and more towards thar type of player.

I can see why that can be an issue but honestly I think it’s irrelevant. there so many big name players who went to smaller schools and played in juco. Josh allen literally played at reedley college before going to wyoming. if Willis gets drafted to a Carolina it wouldn't be the worst since Carolina has had ability with a mobile qb (Newton) and could relieve pressure from CMC. but i also think he is a major MAJOR project. he needs to stop throwing in towards the sidelines and has to get faster game recognition on where the safety's are and trusting your arm in the NFL is key. Brett Favre got a lot of picks but he threw the football everyplay hes gotta stop playing safe and let the ball fly.

This is what I've been saying about Malik Willis. He's got amazing potential, but his NFL career will get ruined if he is made a starter from the get-go. That is why I don't think he is a fit for teams looking for an immediate quarterback replacement (like Steelers, Buccaneers, etc.). He'd be best served to land at a team where their quarterback has reached their potential, but needs replacing fairly soon. That way, he can learn to fix his glaring weaknesses before jumping into the main spotlight. Maybe the Broncos could be a good fit for him where he could dial things being the 2nd string to Terry Bridgewater for a year or two before taking center stage. I think he'll really shine in a situation like that. That is my thoughts on him anyways.

I totally agree, I do however believe we overrate the quality of the bridge QB. I did a study a few years ago and it's very rare that bridge QBs are actually good enough to play a full season while the new rookie sits and learns. @@AlexRollinsNFL Whelp, scratch my suggestion of him going to the Broncos... Russell Wilson got traded there. @@pop3456 Yep, they could very well be gunning for Malik Willis as their setup is exactly what I was saying needs to be done for Willis. Maybe they read my message... lol.

I don’t like to make up my mind based off one analyst’s criticisms but this video looks like Johnny Manziel to me. That’s my first impression.

He reminds me of McNabb. He doesnt have McNabbs elusiveness coming out however. So Willis like McNabb is a bit raw, he's th kind of QB who needs to sit for a few games before starting. I could see Seattle, Philadelphia, Steelers or New Orleans all take this kid. He's constantly a second late, but you can fix that to a degree... but there are times when his receivers don't reach their landmarks quick enough or aren't wide open so he gets spooked. Add in a terrible OL and you get a talented QB who is trying to win games appearing to be worse than he is. Still he certainly should be QB1 its not relatively close.

Tannehill is criminally underrated. The only reason he played mediocre last season was due to him playing with practice squad players all season.

Nothing negative can really be said about the coaching staff at liberty! That’s ridiculous! Coach freeze and the quarterback coaches are amazing. Liberty continues to lose coaches to other schools because of their ability. Malik Willis struggled last year because he had virtually no offense of line help. No one would’ve done near as well as he did had they had as poor of the offense of line as he had. Of course he was sacked more than virtually anyone because of the Constant pressure while he was always trying to make a play as a great And awesome athlete!! If Willis had just the average office of line protection, the team probably would’ve gone 11 and two again in 2021 as he did in 2020. Most quarterbacks with that office of line would’ve had a season something like two and 10. Willis is going to be amazing at the pro level give him a chance and you’ll never regret it!

The good the bad and the ugly. As a Washington fan we can't afford to wait 3 years for him to develop. I'll pass we need an established qb right now.

This is the problem with super athletic QBs: they rely on that athleticism too often. They can't help it. Their entire life they've been able to get away with it, and all of a sudden they get to the NFL and it doesn't work. They have to humble themselves and learn to win from the pocket if they want to last in the NFL, and that's a "between the ears" question.
@AlexRollinsNFL2 жыл бұрын
Yessir! The NFL game best serves QB who can solve problems from within the pocket, then who can also create with their feet as a last resort

Willis he has flaws but shows a lot of promise if he goes somewhere with a good coaching staff and a team that already has a QB so he can sit and learn for a season or 2 he can flourish. Places like Atlanta Minnesota or even Pittsburgh if they bring a vet in to play.
