Memphis (Memphis State) was a very strong program in the 60s and 70s as well playing a powerful schedule against the SEC, Southwest conference and Major Independents. Check some of those schedules especially in the 70s. They played Florida State, Texas A&M, Tennessee, Auburn, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Cincinnatti, Houston, Louisville. Most of these every year.

As a Memphis Tigers season ticket holder we are at the top, only getting better , we are here to stay. Seriously since being a season ticket holder for the past 4 years I’ve learned so much no matter how high you set the bar they will reach it. Even though we lost to penn st Which still bugs me I see the game as a win, I would like to add the penn st fans are very respectful. The cotton bowl was our first New Years 6 bowl game , Riley Patterson set a cotton bowl record and overall the game was a great showing for Memphis. I also realize that because of we haven’t had the easiest ride to the top when we get there it’ll pay off. The city of Memphis is real and extremely down to earth and that can be said for our football , basketball and the university of Memphis. We call our self’s the best team in Tennessee because we are we have been for the last couple of years and will continue to be, as we rise the AAC rises too , when we reach the top the AAC will be with us. I could talk for years about us , you can watch as much of us on TV but you will never get the true experience until you cross the Mississippi River, seeing the pyramid before getting lost on Beale eating the best BBQ I. The world to end off on tiger lane and heading into the liberty bowl to watch the tigers. The game day experience is extremely unique. #gtg

Memphis is just not the best team in Tennessee. Nope. Brady White is an average QB (yes I’ve seen him play live, went to the UCF, UConn, and Houston games year before last, and then the Ole Miss, SMU, Navy, and both Cincy games). Kenny Gainwell is a top 5 back, but UTK is the best team in the state. When UM can consistently recruit the best players from the Memphis area, I’ll listen to arguments on them being the best in the state. Otherwise, they’re always in second place (though they are FAR better than Vandy)

I taught Kenny Gainwell in highschool. He made teams look as if they were standing still. As a MSU fan I couldn’t believe that we couldn’t land a good ole boy from Yazoo County. His younger brother is also at Memphis now, and he is a replica of Kenny.

Just a quick add, but the Rise of Memphis Football started with the firing of Tommy West. When he gave his final press conference in November 2009, he put the AD, the administration, and pretty much the entire city of Memphis on notice. He made the declaration that the people of Memphis needed to stand up and ask for more and demand more for the football program while cutting out the negativity. He was yet another fired coach saying the same thing and that history would continue to repeat itself if they (the administration) didn't do something about it. Coach West implored them to give the next guy a fighting chance or do away with it. The consensus is that if he hadn't given this rant over 10 years ago, Memphis Football would not be where it is today. GO TIGERS

I disagree. He had nothing to work with when he was offered the job. The program was already in bad shape.

@@kennethshaw7582 I m not saying it was loaded, but 3 wins in 2 years, and not impressive ones at that is not getting it done. No development of.players. under Porter, we were nearly at the dead bottom in both offense and defense. Within a few spots of both..that's hard to do on purpose. We had an entire year where we had 8 yards in punt returns. For the entire year we had 8 total yards in punt returns. Think about that. I think you or I could get 8 yards in 11 or 12 games. No speed, and worse, no hope for the future. Maybe he did not start with a good or even decent program, but he made it even worse. He off put fans and media members. He seemed like he was always defensive and did not want to talk to people. He got a tough draw I'll admit. He was a very nice player and it seemed like a great hire. But it just didn't work and no amount of more time would have made it better. The worse part of all to me was the lack of direction and hope. We simply had nothing to look forward to at the time..Fuente gave us that. It wasn't over night, bc he didn't exactly inherit a great program from Porter. But he showed it could be done. No matter how successful Norvell and silverfield are, we owe a while lot to Justin Fuente. It was him who did the impossible. He hasn't been around in awhile, but unlike Coach Cal I will always hope he does well and ten years from will thank him again.

Memphis doesn't bring a television audience that the SEC currently doesn't have so they're not attractive to the conference. But if the Big 12 ever decides to expand Memphis should be it's first target. It would give strength to the conference in basketball and put them right in the middle of SEC country. I'd much rather have them in our conference than Vanderbilt. Go Dawg!!

It has been an amazing run, esp after the Porter disaster. I think the early 90's teams don't get the respect bc 1) there were so few bowl games for us back 2) no conference 3) the schedule was brutal. We played 5 SEC teams one year. Also had USC, VA Tech, etc.. the fact we did as good as we did then showed how good those teams under Stobart were. In a 15 year period we beat Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Florida, USC, VA Tech, Arkansas, Vandy and Missouri amongst others. Yet we would beat them and then lose to Tulsa the next week. So frustrating.i don't think they got the credit for the giant killers they were bc of the lack of consistent play. For a group of 5 team to beat that many top ranked programs needs its own video. It was an amazing run
@dln594 жыл бұрын
As a Tiger fan of 50+ yrs, that used to drive me crazy. But Stobart's teams were tough as hell. The defense was always top 20. And I've always wondered where the program would be if we hadn't lost Coach Dockery just as he was starting to get results. While may not have won a lot of games during those years, we did win a lot of BIG games, and anybody who played us had to respect us. Go Tigers !!!
@acetiger93374 жыл бұрын
First off I love your videos and especially the 'rise' ones. I'm curious if you're willing to do a 'consistency' documentary too, for example..I've seen videos on the consistency of Bama, Clemson, and Ohio State, but I don't think I have seen a video on the consistency of Oklahoma football. Here's some quick context. In 125 seasons, only 11 losing seasons.. 114 .500+ seasons.. 7 Natty's, 49 Conference Champs, 162 All Americans, 7 Heisman trophy winners..Only program with 4 100+ win coaches, and finally the highest winning percentage of any team since 1945 (.762). For the context of this comment I'm using .500 as a 'winning' or at least a 'non-losing' season. In that context, OU has only had 11 losing seasons (Below .500) 1895..1922-24..1934..1942.1960/65..1996-98.. This shows several notable streaks, including a 3 decade streak from 1966-1995. I'd really like to see a deep dive on why they've been consistent. Thank you for reading my comment, I hope you have a great day.
