is it a fact or a theory? I think people try to make sense of things in video game by ignoring developers can make things up; like a jungle in the soviet union.

@@J_AlsoKnownAsJ The animal life in Snake Eater is pretty dang unrealistic but there are definitely rainforest in parts of Russia that are in Asia. The southern border of Siberia has some diverse ecosystems.
@PaperStarship3 жыл бұрын
@@J_AlsoKnownAsJ umm that’s not where the jungle design came from. There are some areas based on irl locations but they’re not from Russia. Kojima and his team scouted various Islands throughout Japan, and forests in Canada that were known for their lush flora and fauna. Drawing inspiration to create their own unique wildlife environment. With some locales remaining virtually unchanged in their video game adaptation: places like the Yakushima forest bridge or the Amami Oshima mangroves that would in turn become the Dolinovodno bridge and The Sorrows River.
@BobExcalibur3 жыл бұрын
@@PhiltheMean The biodiversity in 3 is explained in one of the conversations Snake can have with Paramedic on the subject of the crocodiles; a lot of the fauna were imported to study the effects of radiation upon them and allowed to escape into the local biome due to neglect. It sets up a neat thematic parallel with Snake and The Boss having been victims of radiation exposure themselves. Every Metal Gear game has some detail that makes the enemies you evade and fight have parallels with the protagonist that make them more sympathetic than initial impressions might provoke, and in 3 that same consideration extends to the wildlife.
@PhiltheMean3 жыл бұрын
@@PaperStarship This makes sense. I was just trying to make a point that actually yeah, there is jungle in Russia. It's not all frozen tundra. I'm all for Kojima taking creative license with locales. As for villain backstories, I don't think you're supposed to fully sympathize with them so much as go "eh, shit sucks". Psycho Mantis in particular is a *bastard*, he knows it, and that's it. He's a bastard to the end, though he does one vaguely nice thing

They are about what lead them to this fight and usually also what lead them to becoming cyborgs and it's rarely a pleasant story but even though you don't like them automatically it let's you understand oh this is the tragedy of your life that lead you here or okay you've always just not really cared about x.
@BobExcalibur3 жыл бұрын
Each game in the series has the characters (particularly villains) influenced mainly by the concept Kojima themed the story around. in 1, the GENE game, the bosses are the way they are because of the predisposition of their birth. Mantis couldn't help being psionically gifted, Raven was born to be a colossus, and so on. In 2, the MEME game, every character is a victim of nurture. Fortune wasn't a gifted soldier but became a military asset due to the engineered tragedy of her life and the opportunity that was placed before her. Vamp's powers are not innate but rather the product of nanoaugmentation. Fatman was granted knowledge and mentorship by a genius without moral consideration, resulting in his entitled persona. In 3, the SCENE game, the characters are victims of circumstance, or "the times" as The Boss puts it. Loyalty has made the Cobras an extension of The Boss's will with no agency of their own, Snake's support staff are all disgraced yet brilliant people whose unorthodox thinking would be vindicated by history (Sigint's technological prowess rejected because he's black, Paramedic's ideas about mobile medical soldiers eventually becoming widely adopted). Each of these threads connects to the protagonist, and encourage the player to consider how the human struggle is shared by every character, no matter how absurd or mundane they may be.

An obscure thing that I literally only found so, so, SO many years after the fact is that you can find a parachute in the Sniper Wolf boss arena. Getting close to it, you get a call where Snake goes "yep, he survived. You can't parachute out of a crashing hind without special procedures: he left the parachute unused here like 'fuck you I lived'". Further the point of him surviving all that nonsense is of course, that in the end "fate" (a virus) kills him. It's nonsense but the things are addressed, I guess

That his agency didn't exist and that his end would eventually play out as written in his genetic code. He saw that fate as "become the greatest warrior who has ever lived, become a messiah figure to every warrior in the world, change the global paradigm to 'benefit' warriors who have become persona-non-grata in the post-Cold War world". Introduce a virus that rewrites one's genetic code to "your heart cells commit sudoku and you die abruptly" and his ideology comes apart.

Funny thing about the over-the-top cutscenes in Twin Snakes. Originally, the cutscene director, action filmmaker Ryuhei Kitamura, wanted to make the cutscenes loyal to the original.
