Today we’re joined by Jeremiah Roberts and Andrew Soncrant, hosts of the podcast "Cultish," to talk all things cults and the occult. We look into Gen Z’s obsession with manifesting, tarot cards and “WitchTok,” and what the Bible really says about the spiritual realm. Then, we explore whether we should really be paying attention to signs and symbols. We discuss demonic possession and oppression and what that really looks like, in contrast to movies and television - such as "Stranger Things" or "Doctor Strange" - that portray occult content.

Allie Beth Stuckey, thank you so much for doing this episode! I love how God always shows us what we need to know in His perfect timing! Praise God! I am a devout Christian trying to teach my daughter in the ways of Christ. My four year old daughter is starting universal pre k and during orientation the school was saying that during after care they will have someone to come in and do yoga and mindfulness with the kids. My soul was very unsettled when I was hearing this like the Holy Spirit was warning me not to let my daughter participate in this. Then I see this episode and these guys confirmed what I already knew about the practice of yoga and how it does not fit into Christianity. I will be writing a letter to the school asking my daughter not to participate in it. I hate to be "that Mom" but my daughter's salvation and safety is my top priority and I honestly don't care what anyone else thinks. It is what God thinks that is most important! Thank you!

Every single Christian I know that has turned yoga into a regular practice as a means to find more peace in their day to day lives and feel better physically, has become more anxious, less peaceful in their interactions and have experienced darker trials to which they have not been able to as of yet overcome. Would we allow a satanist to come to church just to get a snack at time of Holy Communion? Absolutely not it would be blasphemous. They believe Westerners are doing the same when practicing yoga, as it is designed as partnership with the gods. When someone gets upset and offended when their practicing of yoga is under scrutiny, the offended party must ask themselves just what are they fighting for? Is it Truth and God's will? Or is it pride and a clinging to that which we love more than our pursuit of Truth and sanctity in God's Kingdom. We need to always examine ourselves and our motives because we can convince ourselves of the deepest lies if we aren't careful, whether we intend to or not.

I have no stake in yoga, but I noticed some discrepancies in Jeremiah & Andrew's line of reasoning with it. They state that you shouldn't do it even if you are not practicing the spiritual aspect of it because it's innately spiritual, and even say "should we redeem child sacrifice in Jesus' name?" Not even remotely in the same category as physical exercise. But then when it comes to what TV or movies to watch they say "it's up to your own conscience." Also, the complete dismissal of the argument of meat sacrificed to idols because "yoga isn't meat" was frustrating. I also have to point out that many of the leaders of Apologia come from a background in martial arts, and they posted a video on KZbin about how beneficial martial arts can be if you separate the spiritual practices from it. I hope my thoughts weren't too scattered here. 😆

I am thinking that Stranger Things and other magic/witchcraft like shows, which describe so much of Hollywood and entertainment, would be a hard NO. I am surprised at your answers. They seem to lure people into the magic and that world. And the thought of such strong and prominent Christians saying that it’s ok could be a stumbling block for the weaker. I am afraid the church is underestimating the influence of these shows. Not to take away from our Sovereign Lord but a discerning is much needed. I am not throwing stones, just really surprised. We should lead by example. My first example is to my children. Then to my church family and it extends out to anybody I have an influence on, saved or lost. I am convinced that the things I watch and the entertainment in general that I enjoy needs to be pure. Again, not throwing stones, just surprised.

As a former practitioner of Wicca/New Age, I highly recommend also Ray Yungen's book, 'A Time of Departing,' which looks at how pagan and mystical practises have been employed by the church. It was very insightful for me, helping me understand terms and what people mean. I truly hope it helps equip those who are coming out of the occult, and those seeking to witness to others currently in it. For those seeking Biblical church homes, I hope the book provides you with understanding about what has happened in many churches and what to be mindful of and stay away from. God Bless

A final straw in leaving our former church was when ladies thought that drawing an elaborate “prayer” labyrinth on the back outside patio was a good idea for a family worship night. My husband (who was a deacon there)and I came in and washed it off immediately when we encountered it the next day (we didn’t attend because I already had misgivings) When I confronted the preacher he said he wasn’t aware and wasn’t there. People were offended when I told my concerns about using pagan ways to worship the one true and living God and Savior. They said things like , “But we were praying to Jesus while we were doing it.” And “No one there was practicing paganism”. What a mess. We belong to a solid 1689 LBCF church family now, the only reformed church in town and feel a safety within that confessional unity. Here anything like that would be held immediately up to the scrutiny of scripture and would be squelched.

Speaking of people overreacting about symbols, I bought anointing oil sold by messianic Jews for my mother, and one of my coworkers (pastor's kid) was freaking out because it had a star of David as one of the symbols on the packaging. She went on and on about how I should stay away from such things. I pointed out that she openly talks about how she lives and sleeps with her boyfriend all the time and that she's straining a gnat while swallowing a camel. She was focusing on such small details and proudly talking about how she's breaking one of the ten commandments. When you mentioned that overfocusing on symbols can take people's eyes off Christ it reminded me of that.

I was exposed to a LOT of demonic stuff from a very small child. I did some research on fraternities, sororities, masons and eastern stars and feel that those organizations are utterly ungodly. With Yoga, I think the best way to sum it up was when Andrew said, "These are the poses of the Idol." That, for me really simplified the whole thing. Doing the poses or signs of an idol that is not God worship. It may be unintentional but as we know, this is a tactic that has been used throughout the ages. Isn't this exactly why discernment is so necessary? I have seen so much demonic symbolism and normalization of it in tv shows. Netflix is huge with this but it goes way back. I remember watching "Charmed" It is so difficult not to be exposed to this type of stuff.

“Be aware (of the spiritual realm), but not impressed by the powers and principalities of darkness…” Dean Sherman has an excellent study on Spiritual Warfare. As with anything, we are to Acts 17:11 all things, all teachers, and hold all things up to the Word of God. Teachers are men too, and they are not to be esteemed above Christ. Dean Sherman does a great job explaining that we have parts of the Body that never discuss our adversary or the powers and principalities of darkness and then the pendulum swings to the other side, where individuals blame everything on the devil (devil made me do it - when in reality, we have a sin nature and flesh that must be examined). Keeping all these things in mind, we are to be “standing firm and sober-minded…” We have a very real enemy, but an awesome, powerful King of Kings to which we are to worship, adore, and imitate. Great episode! I am thankful for their examination of Scripture.

In the scripture when it says that idols are not gods and have no power… it means the idol is powerless in itself but there is a demon spirit behind the idol. For example, tarot cards have no power in themselves but when a human puts faith in them they activate the demon behind it which allows it in to a persons life.

I believe we should use greater discernment than suggesting that it's fine for a Christian to be watching Stranger Things. Those comments made me lose a little respect for these guys. Stranger Things is basically horror genre and watching such things causes trauma to the human mind. Do you believe that it pleases the Lord for Christians to be watching such darkness made by evil men? The last few generations who have grown up with violent and evil tv and movies are desensitized and we now see this programming as "normal." If you ever take a fast from these things for a few months, you will be shocked at what you have been watching and have allowed your children to be exposed to. Trauma and fear are used for mind control. There is a reason certain types of shows and movies are being created and promoted. It's not to bring glory to God or to edify His people.

Do you mind telling me how you got to that interpretation of Rev 20:2-3? What are your eschatological beliefs in general; do you believe in the Rapture of the Church, what do you believe about the book of Revelation itself and the Millennium or Millennial Kingdom and/or the Millennium temple, written about in other books besides Revelation, like in Ezekiel? PS: If you believe we’re in the Millennium/Millennial Kingdom now, what would be the reason to let Satan out of the bottomless pit after the thousand years is over? Maybe through the thousand of years people have made these stretches into this spiritual aspect!! I was practically bedridden with joint pain and sciatica 25 years ago, tried all the medical avenues including pharmaceuticals and I kept getting worse. I read up on other options and these yoga poses came up. I have been pain free for 24 years now, I’ll be 60 next year and am on no pharmaceuticals at all, no joint pain at all. When I noticed that happening I stopped eating all processed food, so it does go together!! Since I’ve been old enough to know about God I’ve believed and studied faithfully for 45 years, nothing worldly will ever change that. So whatever stretches or yoga if your mindset is toward Our Heavenly Father nothing will change that.

We are supposed to bring our own religious teachings that we have learned from the Bible and our parents of God and the Holy Spirit - we bring those into our yoga practices and when we do, we can actually heal with His power. They were taking about the women of Salem who were wrongfully accused as if they were really witches. This is so wrong.

I studied some of the history of yoga and found that originally it was specifically a form of breath work and meditation intended to awaken a "kundalini spirit" in the body, there was no physical exercise involved at all. Several of the stretches known in modern yoga were actually taken from Scandinavian exercise programs in the 1800s during a time when physical exercise was becoming more popular. Yoga (the original form) was waning in popularity at the time, so in an effort to revitalize interest in the young ppl by capitalizing on the popularity of the growing trend towards physical exercise, they incorporated the movements and expanded it as a way of drawing more ppl. But yoga purists of the era looked down on it as a lesser form of yoga because it wasn't as focused on the breathwork+meditation aspects which were the real gateway to spiritual evil. So I think the exercise itself is fine and beneficial, it's the other elements that are harmful.

I was surprised to hear your guests take such a hard stance on yoga, then give Stranger Things a pass. And they were not just saying to avoid the music and meditation of yoga, but to avoid even doing a yoga pose. But they like Stranger Things and believe it's a good show. This was especially surprising given the discuss the three of you had regarding consistency as Christians. We must be consistent. Otherwise, excellent show. I love that you interviewed Cultish for episode 666. We've been wondering what you would do for that one. Keep up the good work.

I think you misunderstood what they said about Stranger Things. It’s a good show that doesn’t over sexualize teens. I have teens and it’s been a great catalyst for discussion. It doesn’t glorify demonic or occult practices either like Harry Potter. It’s good vs evil. It’s not a christian show but neither is Frozen and yet everyone let their kids get wrapped up in that without any discussion

Just to speak to the “seeing the devil everywhere comment”…a Native American friend of mine told me once that she thought a demon was attacking her voice because her ear and jaw hurt so badly. I slowly asked her is she thought she might have an ear infection and told her about a home remedy I’ve used for years and to give it a try (putting hydrogen peroxide in your ear and letting it sit there for a few minutes). I told her, “if it’s infected, it will bubble A LOT!” Next time I saw her she told me her ear bubbled so much and now it was MUCH better! 😅 Not a demon. Just an ear infection!😂

Then I saw a video on getting rid of bad objects and threw away those discs, a Mary statue, some dreamcatchers and a brass elephant from a Hindu friend. I will say that we quit Stranger Things cuz of the extensive cussing by young kids. Using the F word all the time! Also the Hindu God's aren't God's, they're demons. I appreciate this channel as well as this episode. I appreciate consulting ally's opinion on many current issues and weighing that in as I navigate life. I appreciate that she feels a need to defend truth and expose that which is not true. And as I watched this episode I feel the need to do the same. Please understand that this comment is in no way meant in anger or disrespect. (I feel a major disadvantage of a written message vs a face to face conversation is not being able to sense the emotion with which something is said.). So with all respect and kindness I feel a need to speak a clarification and share truth. On several occasions comments were made throughout this episode implying that "Mormons" are a cult. I also couldn't miss the poster of the temple in salt lake city. "Mormon" is actually just a nickname given by people outside the church. The correct name to be used is The church of Jesus Christ of latter-day saints. I must with all respect strongly disagree with the classification of cult. Yes, we believe that God can continue to speak and give further instructions. So yes, we do believe that in addition to the bible there are further words of God. We believe that we as humans cannot restrain God by dictating when he can speak. Yes, we believe in following our leader. We believe God has a prophet on the earth today, just as there were prophets in scriptural times. God is an unchanging and supreme God, he loves all of his children from all times. Why in the most confusing times of the last days would he leave us on our own without a prophet? But going on with the definition of a cult that was given...we are not forced or threatened into blind obedience. We are always encouraged to seek God personally for his confirmation and testimony of truth. And things are not done in secret or darkness. This is a church of light and truth. It sounded like much of the opinion offered was based on those who are angry and have left the church. What they have to say can be weighed into one's opinion, that is fine. But one must also realize this is only half the story and will obviously be somewhat biased. Has the other side of the coin been examined? Christ taught us that by their fruits ye shall know them. Have the fruits of those who are angry been examined? Have the fruits of the church of Jesus Christ of latter-day saints been examined? I can testify the fruit is sweet, for it is the love of God! Every church has those who have left it and oppose it. Every church also has those who profess to be of it, but who are failing to truly live it's precepts. Christianity will always have those who stake claim in it's ranks, but whose fruits are in no way examples of the light of Christ. It would be foolish to judge all Christianity by their example...we cannot condemn all based on their works. And so it is with the church of Jesus Christ of latter-day saints. Satan will always fight against and try to defame truth. He will try to have the bad example of the few distract from what the truth actually is. Before one defames all latter-day saints as a cult...have they actually examined what the teachings and the fruits are? Again, I hope this has not been taken in a contentious way! It is not intended that way at all. I do not believe we can speak for God in anger and contention when he denounces such behavior. Satan is the father of all lies and contention. I first saw this episode yesterday, and in not wanting to stir up anger had decided not to say anything. But then in my scripture study this morning I read Ezekiel 33 and felt that God was asking me to open my mouth. I hope this will not stir anger. But I also realize that God has said if people are angry and revile us for the truth, so they did to Him as well. I must testify that the church of Jesus Christ of latter-day saints is the same church and gospel as was here with Christ on the earth. It has been restored with His priesthood power. God has a prophet on the earth to guide us through these troubled last days. Listen to what he has to say. They are not the words of a power hungry or deceived individual. Listen to his words and you will hear the words of truth. Ask God what He says about it. In James it says "if any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God who giveth to all men liberally and upbraideth not. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea. Driven with the wind and tossed.". If you will ask God with an open mind (not expecting that you can tell God what answer he should give you) if the church of Jesus Christ of latter-day saints is a cult...I know He will answer. When seeking truth both sides must be examined. If you want to know what this church actually teaches, here is the official website. I don't often comment on things to know if actual links are allowed, so I will spell it out:). churchofjesuschrist(dot)org Thanks again for all the effort you put into speaking up for truth. My comment was shared in kindness and love.

@28 minutes about depression. My mother said it's impossible to be depressed if your thankful. Think about that.. Only evil wants us sad or fearful or several other emotions to depress us. But being thankful in ALL THINGS means happy in the valley of death or riding high on the mountain. Romans 8:28. All things. So if someone is depressed it's because they fall short giving thanks as believers should. In all things give thanks and stand on the promises of GOD. You will find the peace that passes all understanding.

It is surprising to see how even when it is believed that having stability or certain economic freedom, people do not stop turning to certain spiritual practices to try to fill their lives, there is still an emptiness inside, something is missing. That is when you can open the door of your house, your heart and your spirit to the pagan or to the Christian, if the pagan ends up filling your being, in some way you are still exposing yourself to a void and to some kind of danger, because you will resort to mix more pagan things trying to fill some void that they themselves cannot give you. And if you end up accepting God in your life, we must be careful in our successes and even in our failures, not to let in anything that contaminates our lives and our relationship with God. At the same time I wonder how many things the antichrist will use to deceive people? As always, many greetings from Mexico and may the Lord bless you and your families, and at the same time protect you from any deception of the enemy to ruin your relationship with God and your lives. Let us always turn to him to fill our whole being.

I have been wary of the Cultish show for a long time, but this kind of cinches it. You stay away from Yoga, but endorse Stranger Things? I assume you also endorse things like Christmas and Easter with their very pagan history. How can you say one is okay but not the others? How can you say “it’s only entertainment” but not “it’s only stretching”? You said it yourselves; how far are you willing to go to stay away from paganism? You say ‘you can eat the meat because it’s for sustenance’, how is Stranger Things for sustenance? The men in Cultish are so hypocritical and that is why so many people turn their backs on Christians.

Even when you go to the doctor, if it's not about a diet and try to convince you you are allergic to wheat or something of that nature or if you are stressed or whatever then they try to convince you either to do yoga or meditate and even these sites that seem innocuous or seem benign that say like rain falling or a crackling fireplace or something to fall asleep to, a lot of times within those, they sneak in things of the occult. Owls which represent moloch. Different shapes of the cross which also are very sneaky but they mean something. We need to be praying for real discernment as deceit is the biggest thing going on. When you mentioned gaining weight with pregnancies I don't know what was wrong with me but with every pregnancy I had three children I gained less weight and got thinner after each child. My last child I only gained what you mentioned which was 16 pounds. He was my smallest baby at 6 lb when he was born. I am 5'9. He was my miracle baby, as some things went wrong when he was born. N o w, my son is in heaven. He died in 2019 at the age of 21. Partly why I even know more about the occults is because this son got involved in it. Praise God though, he did become a born again Christian shortly before he died. It was a dramatic change in his whole demeanor and everything about him.

Hello, I’m here to learn more about Christianity as it is the path I have chosen to take. I’ve always believed I was a very spiritual person, and have gotten into the “esoteric things” not knowing any consequences that are attached to it. I am learning a lot simply by reading people’s comments on what they’ve experienced. I’ll be throwing away my tarot cards tonight. I do love my crystals like amethyst and quartz that I keep around the house. Is that okay?
@ObsessedwithZelda2

Crystals/gems in an aesthetic sense should be just fine. God made these and they speak to His power and majesty. That said, if you personally struggle with viewing them as having special power or anything like that, then it may be a good idea to get rid of them even if they are not evil things. If they distract you from Jesus, then they will cause you harm. We can make an idol out of anything, so it’s good to be aware if anything is filling that spot in your life, no matter how innocent a thing it is. You can always pray for wisdom on how to approach these things too. I personally think that all the incredible things we see in nature should make us more in awe of God who created it all. If I’m remembering right, in Revelation, there is a lot of gemstones or similar described as being a part of the new Earth, right?

I agree with the person above me who suggested to read the Bible! That is the best way to learn about God, from God Himself! I love using my Rock of Ages Study Bible. I would also look into finding a local Bible-believing church so that you may fellowship with them and be under sound doctrine. Church attendance is God’s will for those who are saved. Hebrews 10:25 “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.” Online church services can be a good thing until you can find a church to attend, but it’s not a substitute for the real deal. I will pray that you can find a Bible-believing church in your area, but if there is not one I like listening to Reg Kelly preaching videos here on KZbin

I had never heard of such. And, would love to know your guests thoughts. I've watched Doreen Virtue cover this topic. As a Christian, that believes in the salvation only through Jesus Christ and sanctification, I don't know understand why as Believers you need deliverance. I appreciated the guests comments on freewill rather than demon oppression. I hope that made sense. Appreciate any comments others may have on this type of ministry. Just recently after prayer, other godly counsel with other Christian friends made the decision to cut off all social platforms from that church.

Yoga yokes the soul (index finger) with Brahman (the oversoul, universal consciousness, etc.) (thumb). Hence the Vitarka Mudra (“OK” hand gesture) warned about in Proverbs 6:13 (which also warns about occult use of the single covered eye) - representing the detachment (actually destruction) of our earthly vessel to destroy the soul, which Hindus believe would otherwise be subject to samsara (cyclic reincarnation). This is accomplished via transcendental meditation mantras (vain repetitions of or like heathens per Matthew 6:7 KJV; “om” at Vedic “A” pitch of 432Hz, resonant with the universe, repeated thrice to pay homage to the creation rather than the Creator) and pranayama (breath “life force” that is unnatural breath control). In reality, however, life is in the blood; and Satan is the prince of the power of the air. Shapeshifting unnatural (at least when held) asanas (poses) or submissive asanas (with prayer mudra fusing “natural, carnal world” left hand with “spiritual realm” right hand, denying the distinction of God’s creation per Genesis 2:1 and 1Corinthians 2:14) emulate and pay homage to created things, or at least to the familiar spirits attributed to them - like water conforming to the form of its vessel. Continued breakdown leads to the fire (immediate, violent, and uncontrolled self-sustaining reaction) of a kundalini awakening (uncoiling the serpent up the central nervous system and opening of the third eye, which is basically demonic possession or at least massive demonic oppression). Yoga is a pursuit after the elements (aka rudiments, in the KJV sometimes) of this world and not Christ, which Colossians 2:8 and Galatians 4:9 warn against. Those elements are earth, air, water and fire, corresponding to soul, mind, heart, and strength. Yoga dissociates identity in that latter list via trauma (by submission to ungodly spirits), trance, intoxication (by altering the lymphatic system through poses), and occult (via the pineal gland at the very least, if one insists upon a physiological explanation). At the same time, yoga absolutely denies God. Yoga is inherently an unredeemable, evil practice.

@@Maksie0 If you think that is insane, read the works that inspire Hindus for real insanity, because they buy into it. I did not make any of this stuff up.

Truth or Territory by Jim Osman is a great book on this topic; he also has a KZbin series that covers the material.

Also, It is very difficult to be a person that sees the evil. I do not seek it out. I don't see it in everything like you were saying about those that see it in shadows and colors. However, I see it in different areas in this life. Small things, big things. So many unexpected things. Not everywhere but often in the things that seem so benign. It is unsettling to me because I feel like so many are not open to hear or see the truth. I've talked to people I'm close to about Tarot and they are utterly resistant to the idea that it can open a door that allows evil to come through. They think of it like "Hellraiser" where smoke fills the room and an actual demon emerges when it is absolutely about the unseen world.

True exhorsists are Catholic priests. They do not do this for a living. It is their vocation. Priests take a vow of poverty and do not have careers.

I do not do the Yoga thing for years. If you speak to a Hindu who practices Yoga they will say that other religions are not able to practice the Yoga on a spiritual level. We live in a world of evil yet Christians will cherry pick what is bad or demonic.
