As the final Star Wars film in the Skywalker saga has come and gone, I look back at on John Boyega's Finn and how he really deserved better, yet how much his character had suffered from the extensive re-shoots and re-writes that The Rise of Skywalker had gone under.
From the film not delivering on Finn and Rey's relationship after bringing back to the forefront to Finn's origins being left on the cutting room floor, once again, and of course diving into the fact that Finn is confirmed to be force sensitive.

Imagine finding out Jjannah was on the supremacy when Finn fought Phasma and that’s what inspired her to rebel. Would’ve been so much more powerful than “I had a feeling”.

@@TheFirstOkiro I just think the Finn and Jannah dynamic would've been better if Finn's defection and defeat of Phasma is what inspires Jannah and her people to desert. Like just have Jannah explain that it’s because of him they got the courage to rebel when he left and when Phasma was killed, there were small rebellions, but only Jannah’s group survived. Jannah and her people even call Finn “Phasma slayer” this inspires Finn to help Jannah start a Stormtrooper Rebellion. And Rose is there to help broadcast a signal so Finn can give a speech to incite Rebellion. This would not only give Rose more screen time, but would put her engineering skills to work. Finn, Rose and Jannah are able to sneak aboard Hux’s flagship. Rose helps using her skills to help Finn to broadcast a signal to every Stormtrooper. I think it could be something like this. “My name is Finn, I was FN-2187, a Stormtrooper. Like every one of you, I was taken from a family I will never know. I was raised to do one thing… but my first battle, my friend Slip died and that death marked me and made me realize We are people and we have a choice. I wasn’t gonna kill for them. I had nothing to fight for. Until I met my friends, they gave me a name, a purpose and something worth fighting for. So I am here to tell you. You have a choice. You are people. You do not have to kill for them anymore. Take back your lives and fight the people who took your lives away from you. I am giving you the one choice they never gave you and choose for yourselves. You can either storm this very room and kill us or you can take back your lives. The choice is yours.” Then we get a very emotional scene of Stormtroopers led by Finn’s last surviving Squad member, Zeroes removing his helmet and tossing it to the ground and then we see hundreds, to thousands of Stormtroopers ripping their helmets off and tossing them to the ground. Officers DEMAND they put their helmet back on and kill The Resistance scum, but they don’t. It happens. Rebellion. Finn and Rose have successfully led a Stormtrooper Rebellion and together burn The First Order from the inside out . And instead of space horses to land on a Star Destroyer, it’s basically the result of Finn’s message. Stormtroopers start rebelling and Finn is leading the assault. Stormtroopers vs Sith Troopers.

@@TheFirstOkiro It could actually be done, all they would need to do would be to re-implement the deleted scene from Rian Jhonson's The Last Jedi where Finn calls Phasma out for being a traitor for being a coward in The Force Awakens. The one where the stormtroopers who hear him, switch-sides and kill Phasma. All they would need to do would be film her and some of her trooper friends removing their helmets to reveal it was them, and show them escaping, while displacing and saying their actual true revolt where they left The First Order happened later. Yes, contrary to how the negligent of Abrams tried to change tune and ignore The Last Jedi and removing Rose Tico in a very deeply racist and anti-feminist way (and his wounds are treated way worse than Finnz they are forgotten). Rian Johnson actually cared about solving the plot-hole from of Phasma's cowards actions in Force Awakens (but for whatever reason, Disney made him change it to what we got). If JJ Abrams were a good writer, he could had even managed to put Finn into the "you can be redeemed, but the rest of the stormtroopers can't be redeemed trope", and then solve it by revealing Finn had actually redeemed Captain Phasma, who was living among those Stormtrooper, would change his attitude, full reveal shea was the little girl from the Ewok movies and all. That way having Phasma on there side would had legitimized the idea that the Resistance would accept redeemed Stormtroopers. And to solve the whole trouble of the Resistance rejecting Phasma? That was Lando's moment, playing into how the Rebel Alliance accepted him and gave him a chance, despite betraying of Han Solo. That could had easily given Lando an Oscar nomination, without even getting into how his Coruscant cabaret-bar musical number of his exile (Jabba's Palace liked, would had been more thematically consistent than the thematically inconsistent Ewok Celebration-like Parade in the desert planet).They should had focused on the First Order occupied planet, and Coruscant was a better choice than the new planet. It was a very poor choice to add the desert planet (which wouldn't surprise if it was Jakku but they changed the name at last minute), specially because everyone is celebrating as if there was no war going, and that celebration is more happy than the one at the end. Which makes it tonally inconsistent. The Last Jedi works on it's own, but JJ Abrams can't write or direct anything with "Star" on it's title to save his life. So 7 and 9, desperately need Rian Johnson, Dave Filoni, and George Lucas to do Special Editions to save them on the editing room. Also, The Last Jedi doesn't diminish Finn as a character at all, is the one where his character grows the most. Actually, him taking all that damage is what justifies his arc. He goes from only caring about Rey, to caring about what the Resistance actually does. Rose Tico is how JJ Abrams should had written Rey in The Force Awakens, and the arc that Finn gets in The Last Jedi is the one that JJ Abrams should had given him in The Force Awakens in the first place. And no, the retcon of him deflecting the First Order because The Force is not good at all. Is worse because he no longer deflected due to the moral trouble of a village massacre. No, now he deflected because The Force, because the writers are cowards. And the Stormtroopers storyline doesn't resolve at all, nor helps his character, because all made a choice, all had solved their arc, long before meeting him. Abrams didn' even tried. He ruined Trevorow's competent draft, which wasn't even finished, so still would had improved. Have it been given the same due date as Abrams. Worse than all, he makes He made Hux the First Order traitor, when it should had been the other way around. Hux should had been the one on Darth Sidious's side, killing him the generic old admiral should had been his test, in the same way that Sidious wanted Anakin Skywalker to kill Dooku. Him feeling over-shadowed by Kylo Ren and the Knights of Ren, is already how Anakin felt about Obi-wan and the Jedi. The worst part is that all could had still worked, regardless of the grandpa Palpatine no-sense. JJ Abrams is beyond redemption, since all the flaws seem, mostly his fault.

Great video, man. Finn was the character I most interested in coming out of TFA and was royally pissed at his treatment in TLJ. Between what they did to him and Luke, I refuse to watch that movie ever again. But TROS had some good moments. If it had been the basis for a trilogy, rather than an extremely rushed and poorly put together single film, I think Finn could have been one of the best characters in the franchise.

I feel so bad for John Boyega. He's such a huge fan, he knows more about Star Wars lore than most Lucasfilm employees, and then to be cast in the movie must have been so incredible! I absolutely love this video. But you already know that LOL I just want to add a speculation to the comments section that I already wrote to you privately: IMHO what Finn wanted to tell Rey lead two two things... a poignant Force plot for him (it makes no sense to reveal a character is Force sensitive if it doesn't matter obviously and you have shown enough evidence of what that could have been) and to Finn and Rey potentially holding hands at the end of TROS. Furthermore he wants to REALLY DESPERATELY tell her this, even in a moment when he thinks he could die. Her. Specifically. And when Poe is there again, he doesn't tell her. So my assumption is that he did not just want to tell her that he is Force sensitive but that he can feel her through the Force, that they have a bond. This could have meant all sorts of things... for whatever original concept the Dyad was as well...

Saw this on Saltier Than Crait, where there's a lot of Finn and Boyega fans. And while the way you lay the arc out is great, he was definitely done wrong throughout the Disney Trilogy. I can't help but imagine what it would've been like if Finn had been the main character of the trilogy. It would've been better in every possible way.

I actually disagree. I do not like the concept of saying "if Finn had been the main character instead of Rey the trilogy would have been better." I rather argue "if Finn AND Rey had stayed two pretty much equal main characters with parallel stories who BOTH have a different foil with Kylo Ren the trilogy would have been indefinitely better" (if properly executed that is LOL I don't trust DLFL) What IMHO made TFA unique was that there were TWO characters on a hero's journey from two different perspectives. This has never been done in SW before...

@@alienobserver21 I agree. I'm still so disappointed how they dropped Finn and Kylo's relationship after TFA, after all the build up that went into it. In what first chapter of a story do you have one of the heroes lose to a villain and then never have them interact again? But the reason TFA works, at least for me, is the dynamic of Rey, Finn and Kylo. All three of them. And it culminates beautifully in that final battle in the snow. It's taking Finn out of that dynamic, and focusing on Rey and Kylo, that was absolutely to the detriment of TLJ (and TROS presumably but I can't speak to that as I didn't see it).

@@rowansjet It took away the unique element. and then replaced it with literally nothing. I've always argued that - while keeping Finn's and Kylo's dynamic as people who are foils due to their direct life stories - one needs to make Rey and Kylo foils in a different way but one that is explained. Now they are some weird Dyad thing no one quite understands and Finn is being ignored. Instead we could have had enemies by choice and enemies by blood which is why I wanted Rey to be related to Kylo. Because the way it currently is... Rey and Kylo fight because Rey is good and Kylo kinda wasn't (or possessed by Palpatine LMFAO so bad...) and that has no depth. Kylo decided to leave his family behind and join the First Order, Finn decided to leave the First Order AND join the fight of Kylo's family. then on the other side there would have been Rey who is Kylo's cousin/sister who had no choice in the matter but then later makes a choice... and choses to fight with Finn, the person she is not related to. Which makes Kylo explode in anger... Would have been a much more compelling story IMHO

thank you so much for this. i remember being in the theater watching the force awakens, and even before i shipped them, thinking it was obvious that finn and rey were going to end up together. finn, rey, and poe we're clearly marketed as the new trio from the beginning and whether you shipped them or not, it was obvious to everyone that fonn and rey were originally set up as love interests. everything from tlj forward worked hard to undermine that but you can see the remnants of those facts still there. it just hurts so much to see john, oscar and kelly so excited to bring so much needed diversity to star wars knowing how all three were treated and how their roles were so minimized. i've been trying to decide whether tlj or tros is the worst film but your videos on the subject have actually made me see tros in a slightly more positive light. that finn and jannah scene is literally one of the best in the sequel trilogy. so much wasted potential /sigh.

I really enjoyed Rise of Skywalker as a whole... but I totally agree with everything you said about Finn not having the character arc he should have. I loved the character from Force Awakens, and wanted to know a lot more about Finn, which I felt Last Jedi totally ignored... Rise of Skywalker was better, but I always hoped to see deleted scenes from that like the convo you talked about between Finn and Rey. I was sad to find nothing like that on the DVD they released... I was sure after watching the movie Finn was force sensitive and thought that should have been explored way more than it was, to the point where I'd love to see a whole TV series with Finn as the lead exploring his life after Rise of Skywalker.

Not really, mainly because while DOTF gives Finn a great character moment, there's no arc. This is ironic given that TFA gave Finn a great character arc, but it was missing a good character moment to close out the arc. Though I will say a stormtrooper rebellion on Coruscant, where the Clone Trooper first rebelled is a fucking amazing image

Finn could've been so amazing, John's a great actor and I was so hyped to see a stormtrooper turn into a Jedi. Rian Johnson really fucked up the whole trilogy concept.

I'm going to say it, John Boyega and Adam Driver were the best new actors in the sequel trilogy (and Andy Serkis as well but he doesn't come in much). Rise of Skywalker should have been lengthened and been episode 8 and 9, developed the new characters better, there were basically no good characters in episode 8 that weren't in 9. Because of the characters and plot episode 7 will still be my favourite of the new trilogy and it's a complete shame that they didn't improve after that, the characters were the best in that and Last Jedi was too artsy and focused too much on pointless plot points (not enough Finn and C3PO!) and Luke Skywalker's poor direction additionally Emperor Palpatine didn't have enough to do, imagine a duel between Palpatine and Kylo Ren against Finn and Rey and then only when Ren turns can they defeat him. Oh Lord, they should have just given me the films to direct! P.S I really enjoyed this video and your editing and what you said of course, very clever!

They pretty much strip him down and made him Leia in Return of Jedi. Went from powerful but destined warrior to bring down evil to "I can feel it in the air" mellowed out fighter. The only difference is Disney at least had a set up to make Finn character good but instead chickened out.

10:00 I still hate the cavalry charge scene. These people were trianed as stormtroopers why don't they fight as storm troopers would. Blaster small unit tactics givng each other covering fire as they advance. You know soldiers. Heck you coul even have made the "why are the stormtroopers force sensitive" a plotline, I remember in the old EU the empire created dark troopers, force sensitive elite stormtroopers. What if an entire batch of stormtroopers were modified using this technology and all these stormtroopers are from that "recruitment" drive.

I'm not one of the people who wishes Finn was the main character, I'm ok with Rey. But I do wish his story had...more story in it.

Imagine how much better this trilogy could have been if it were what the trailers were teasing. A force sensitive stormtrooper leading a rebellion of desertors with the aid of the original cast and some chick with survival skills. Literally anything else than what we got.
