I agree with you about Bazball strategy still being in the testing phase. I am eager to see how England would react when they get into serious pressure in the future. But on a different note, I believe this new way of playing test cricket proved that teams don't always need to stick to the tried and tested method to get results. There are still new strategies and tactics yet to be explored in the game.

One of the best videos/articles I've seen on the topic! Cannot wait till the Ashes. I see Bazball as a continuation of John Buchanan's philosophies. Guess we'll see if taking that into ultra aggression works. I reckon taking the game deep and not panicking will tie England into knots as they try and find ways to force victories from impossible situations.

Very interesting to watch this after the recent Ashes, which threw up many of these situations in one way or another. I suppose the 2-2 result maybe means its still a little inconclusive, but its looking pretty good overall, I think.

Great video and insight into the term ‘Baz ball’. As an Aussie living in the U.K. long term, all the poms here love the term and there is a lot of discussion in the media. Personally I don’t buy into the media hype around it being a long term future for test cricket. Why can’t they just call it entertaining cricket 🏏 🤷♂️

Yeah I think this really zeroes in on what a lot of pundits seem to have misunderstood about this strategy: it's not as much about the batting as it is about the bowling. Those big scores have only come on extremely flat wickets, thanks to Anderson and Broad's remarkable wicket taking capability. If the Australian bats can put a price on their wickets, they're going to make it very difficult. With the doctored pitches the English have requested, all the Australians need to do is not lose their heads, stay in and score slowly and they can easily put themselves in a position where they might not win, but they can't lose.
@woopimagpie Жыл бұрын
Agreed. If Australia gets in and bats for two days and scores 550 there won't be much England can do to get back into the game. The Australian batters will have to weather the storm early, but that's always been the case playing in England, nothing new there. If Warner can somehow pull off a miracle and withstand early pressure he might hold the key. Most have all but written him off so he has a chance to fly under the radar a bit. Stuart Broad will be supremely confident he can get Warner, and that might be Broad's undoing if Warner can somehow exploit that. Everyone expects Khawaja, Labuschane, and Smith to dig in and graft as they always do, and Head will play hard but Warner is the unknown factor. If he fires, England could very well be in proper trouble. "If" being the operative word.

Sir, I think that the personalities of McCullum and Stokes are such that they will not go back on their strategy once decided. So as long as McCullum is coach, this strategy will remain. I am also excited for the series against India and Australia. I think Sam Curran is not a much worse player than Ben Stokes. In all the formats of the game, if Ben Stokes is injured I will not hesitate to put in Sam Curran in his place.

@zebesiv Жыл бұрын
@suniljain1833 Even so our top 6 is declining, they aren't quite what they were during their 2015-2022 peaks, Pant is looking kinda uncertain, their bowling resources are running thin without Ishant, Bumrah and with Shami only having a couple of years left, Ashwin & Jadeja are also 37 & 35 this year. No one has looked for appropriate replacements yet, I feel like 2024-27 will be a genuinely bad phase for Indian test cricket, not as bad as 2011-13 maybe, but quite bad.

On the second point, it puts into perspective that the potential 2-2 draw, 2-1 or 3-1 loses in The Ashes to Australia. Yeah, they won one (or may win two) test but their tactics have let Australia back in to the series and retain/potentially win The Ashes
@woopimagpie Жыл бұрын
With the Ashes now imminent Bazball is about to face it's greatest challenge. Australia are a properly good team atm, with the top three best Test batters in the world. And, you know, Travis Head, who it seems no one can bowl to with the form he's currently in. The England bowlers are very good at home, no arguments there, but they haven't come up against a batting lineup this good since bazball started. I also fancy the England batters won't find it so easy to tee off against the likes of Starc, Hazelwood, Cummins, Boland, and Neser. Weirdly the two who suit English conditions the best (Boland and Neser) are less likely to play, which makes no sense, but that's how it goes sometimes. A team who works together is always better than one standout player. It's gonna be a fascinating contest.

Controversial opinion: replace Ben Stokes when necessary with Samit Patel and use an extra pacer for Leach where and when necessary
@adamkefalas2082 Жыл бұрын
I think, now we're two matches into the series, there is another issue with Bazball to mention: The sorts of pitches that suit the Bazball kind of batting are very unfriendly to their mostly medium pace bowling attack. When paired with the much higher number of overs that their bowlers are having to bowl compared to their opposition, I think there's a good possibility that England wilt badly at the back end of long series against competent batting groups.
@stue2298 Жыл бұрын
I agree bazball put more pressure on both the batters to score runs fast and the bowlers to bowl standard test amount of overs if they opposition batsmen dig in and score slowly. This will have more affect on the bowlers they they may not get the rest between innings, where the opposition bowlers will be rested. Injuries are always a worry, no one wants to see a player injuried, Stokes is a key play but will bazball fail without him, unknown, then there is Anderson he is 40 and very close to retirement, Archer is out which is disappointing cause he is a world class fast bowler.

Couple of things re the downside of bazball… with Eng pushing their scoring rate to 5+/ov means to maintain an overall match run rate of 3.5-4/ov (ideal rate imo to allow a team to pick up 20wix needed) the oppo only need to score at just over 3/ov which can be achieved without much risk… also oppo bowlers will have to bowl a lot less overs than Engs which could be telling over a whole series

That's an interesting idea! Didn't think about Stokes opening, it would let them bring in another bowler. Don't know whether England would let him open but who knows.🤷
@neiljackbalgi328 Жыл бұрын
Imo bazball will go down in history as the forerunner to a more successful “benball”…when stokes has a “bull pen” of fit quicks at his disposal and a more secure top order to implement his final vision… also while bazball is good enough to win series benball will have to be more ruthless imo… esp if Eng want a WTC… you can’t drop points from winning positions esp at home and expect to make the final let alone win a championship

Batters stay as long as they they can so that Bowlers would rehab. But with this approach they are overburdening their bowlers especially their aging legends
@matthewvicendese1896 Жыл бұрын
Bazball relies upon a road and their bowlers lack penetration without something in the pitch. There only chance is to bat on a road and put on enough runs to play the opposition out of the game. They stuffed that up with early declaration. Also, as far as watch ability, I dont like watching a test match on a road with fielders all on the boundary, while batsmen accumulate singles. Otherwise I'd watch ODI.

It cant work all the time, some pitches it wont work on. I have played a hell of a lot of cricket over the last 46 years and I know that some pitches require a bit more respect. A good example are the recent pitches in India, you couldn't play bazball on any of those. If you get into a habit of trying to score at all costs you will lose more than you win. You need to respect the pitch conditions and the opposition.

Gets bums on seats albeit for 3 days out of the 5. England have gone from a below average team to a side the opponent has to think about. Re the ashes. I feel Borland for the Aussies is key. Either he will take loads of wickets with his persistent line or go sailing around.

Bazball or not, England simply doesn't have the bowling attack to seriously challenge the best teams. They are just a mediocre team playing attractive but ultimately futile (in terms of winning against the top sides) cricket.

Mccullums style is never going to be sustainable as it's a simplistic see ball hit ball. How about play each ball on its merits eg Ricky Ponting, Matthew Hayden, Devon Conway. Mark Greatbatch reminds me of England, he was good but tentative, then turned into a wild man, tgen as time went by he became caught in 2 minds. His style wasn't sustainable.
@andrewsmith2591 Жыл бұрын
I think that the positivity being shown by ENG is great for them and for the game, but it is also nothing new. Positive and agressive actions has been a key mantra of the AUS team for a long time. The scoring rates in particular but also the high intensity of the bowling is, in my opinion not sustainable. Test cricket cannot be played at the same intensity as T20 cricket. Injuries and shortened careers are the most likely outcomes. I agree that Ben Stokes is the most important player and I love watching him as there is always action and excitement. Bluntly though he is not good enough as a batsman alone to hold his place in the team. If he can't bowl then I think the upcoming ashes series will be his last and ENG should be actively and urgently searching for its next captain.
