The reason why the painted lady thanked katara is because she restored the spirit's connection to the river. That's why the spirit didn't came and helped the village. What they did was more like a cleansing to re-establish the connection between spirits and human. You can see aang did the same thing with hei bai he restored hei bai's connection to the forest and gave it hope it would grow back.

This episode is very critical to developing the complexity of the Fire Nation. The last episode we saw indoctrination through state-run education. This episode we see direct damage to people inside the Fire Nation due to their warmongering. I've also read the village as an ethnic minority inside the Fire Nation, so it's not a monolithic culture, much like what we saw for the Earth Kingdom as we travelled it. It also gives Katara a chance to shine. Much like Imprisoned, as you note, but here she's so powered up that she personally can change so much. Plus, more development of the cosmology of the world is always welcome.

Nah, this episode is bottom tier for me despite Katara being my favourite character and thinking Zuko is slightly overhyped. Bottom tier for an Avatar episode being "It's fine", of course. I adore episodes like The Desert and The Southern Raiders largely because of the role Katara plays in those, and The Waterbending Scroll is one of my favourite season 1 episodes despite generally being quite low down most people's rankings from what I've seen. I do not rate Imprisoned particularly highly though, so The Painted Lady filling a somewhat similar role might explain why I don't like it that much. And while I still think Imprisoned is quite funny the comedy in this episode doesn't work for me at all. The climax is really good and salvages it from being the worst episode, but other than that The Painted Lady does very little for me.

Filler usually refers to episodes that don't necessarily push the main narrative forward. Some people use this term incorrectly. It's not supposed to mean that it's a bad episode. The storytelling of the waring tribes in The Great Divide I thought was an interesting way to show how people's conflicts sometimes are minor inconveniences we take to the extreme. And, I like the difference in illustration. It was a great way to tell that type of story.

It may not move the main story forward, but it spotlights character and really underscores who Katara is as a person. When people say, "filler" they mean, "this could have been removed from the series and it wouldn't have hurt anything." And while that may be _technically_ correct, being technically correct is boring. This is a good episode. Some people think that "filler" means you don't advance the main plot, I guess, but I think the series is better for episodes like the Headband and Painted Lady. It shows us how most of the Fire Nation aren't the enemies of the world, they are just people trying to live their lives and/or are victims of propaganda (like the kids in school). And many of them are actually victims of the war, like the fishing town ruined by a war factory. In the same way that Zuko needed to see the impact that the war had on the rest of the world, the gAang needed to see the Fire Nation citizens as victims too.

Filler because it doesn't continue the story line, the great divide did contribute to the story but it was a boring side story so it was considered a filler. Painted Lady is also one of my fav episodes because it shows a lot of Kataras personality type. 0:20 this ep is actually is 2nd last in terms of ratings. And as for the reason why i think its because its not very plot heavy, we dont see Zuko or Uncle Iroh, not a lot of action and not at the usual level of ATLA funny. I still wouldnt call this ep filler because it showcases the effects of war on normal villagers and civilians and we get to see a spirit (which are pretty rare). As for me i think still think its good. Glad u guys went in without bias and with an open mindset. Aang: " I don't meet too many spirits, but the ones I do meet, not very attractive." Yue: 👁👄👁 Kataang on their 1st date: Casually blowing up a factory and committing an act of eco terrorism. Like look at Aang here 9:02 😭😭. 3:59 no meesh. It has eyes because its from that gunky river. It got mutated cause of how bad the water is. Like seen with Hei Bai, spirits are bound to the land they inhibit. Since the river was so polluted the connection between the spirit world and the mortal world was weakend so Painted lady couldn't do anything to help. And at the end of the ep once the river was cleaned the connection was restored. Great reaction . Have a blessed weekend 😁😁.

There's not really filler in the anime sense in Avatar. Since fillers are used for the anime to catch up w the manga, and there's no manga to adapt in anime. There are "rerun" episodes, that run more often because they're more standalone and dont require plot to understand. Avatar has no "filler" in that sense.
@TheAbstruseOne
@TheAbstruseOne 11 ай бұрын
"It's a filler episode!" No, it's not. "Filler" is when shows that are adapted from a work, typically animated shows based on Japanese manga, "catch up" to the story being published. Therefore, the animation company must create original stories to pad out the season run until the manga publishes new issues that they can then adapt. It does NOT mean "an episode that doesn't directly advance the ongoing multiepisode plot". Because guess what: Most shows until recently didn't HAVE ongoing multiepisode plots. By that definition, literally every single episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, The Simpsons, Law and Order, The Golden Girls, and Columbo were "just filler episodes". Also, an episode doesn't have to contribute directly to the narrative to still be important. "The Painted Lady" is a good example of an episode that expands on worldbuilding by showing the nature of spirits (we've seen many who take direct action themselves while this shows one who is more subtle by empowering people to help themselves through inspiring Katara) and the extent of the abuses of the Fire Nation even on their own people, plus builds on and reinforces character growth by showing Katara as someone who will stand up for what she believes is right no matter what.

Colonials are not refugees, it's kinda the opposite, they would be descendent of Firenation settlers on EarthKingdom lands, or local population that would be assimilated. It's the perfect cover for the Team Avatar since some of them don't look like most fire nation citizen. But other than that, I agree for me this episode isn't a filler, it's another inside view of the firenation and how their citizen lives.

Some reasons people use for it not being filler would be arguing that its important for Katara's character or that its important because of its environmentalist message or that its important because of the worldbuilding of showing us how the fire nation treats its own people. But personally I don't think those arguments are that good since we already got an environmentalist message from the show in the winter solstice episode with the burned forest, and Katara goes through the same arc in the painted lady of not turning her back on people that she already went through in the imprisoned episode so the painted lady is just an unneeded rehash of that, and we already knew that the fire nation are dicks to their own people in the storm where they're willing to sacrifice whole divisions and in the headband where they indoctrinate kids.The only new thing that this episode adds that is of any value is showing us that not only is the fire nation a dick to other nations but also a dick to its own civilians but that isn't really relevant to the overall plot or needed to be shown like do we really need yet another reason for why the fire nation government should be overthrown?
