In the Road to Emmaus in Luke 24, Jesus approaches two disciples who seem to have lost faith in Jesus' promises.
Ironically, in the Road to Emmaus, these two disciples ask Jesus, when he inquires what they're talking about, if he hasn't heard the news about what happened to Jesus of Nazareth just a few days before -- and of course, he's the only one who really knows what happened.
On the Road to Emmaus, Jesus lays out a Biblical principle that should be employed by all who wish to understand and fell the full impact of the Gospels: going back to the Old Testament to discover how Jesus fulfilled the promises of the Old Testament.
Check out this video with Dr. Pitre on the Road to Emmaus to learn more.

So, a few years ago now, I was being lead to the last place on earth I ever thought God would lead me, to Catholicism. I was raised on some definite opinions about Catholicism, (cough, Baptist). I remember it well, I was VERY, VERY, VERY reluctant. :) Anyway, I remember sitting at my first Mass, a novus ordo Sunday mass. Way, way, way back in the back. I remember praying that if I was somehow being misled into taking a closer look into Catholicism, God needed to make sure I never made this mistake again. During the scripture readings and homily, I started feeling this burning sensation in my chest. So I’m thinking great, what the hell is this, am I sick, is God telling me I made a mistake, do I need to get out of here as quickly and quietly as possible, all these things a running through my mind. Then, the liturgy of the Eucharist came and at the consecration, my Father in Heaven, opened my eyes to the truth of Jesus’s presence in the Eucharist. I tell you, I cried like I have never cried before in my life and I never wanted anything so badly. Unfortunately, I knew enough about Catholicism to know I couldn’t receive at that moment and since Easter was only a few months away, it was going to be over a year. Which made the wanting so much worse, so much, much, much worse. Just thought I would share my Emmaus road experience, God bless.

Recent Catholic convert from Protestantism and this video made me realize that my own RCIA Catechesis was exactly like the road to Emmaus. Starting with Salvation History and the realization of the old in the new and new in the old - made me realize the significance of the Eucharist. I.e. the real presence of our Lord. This passage has so much more meaning to me now. Thanks for illuminating this for me. P.S. these videos have also been super critical in my conversion so thanks!

The Eucharist is revealed as the way to truly recognize Jesus. If scripture alone were enough, surely his own uncle and disciples would have recognized him so soon after his resurrection personally opening the scriptures to them. Many Catholics easily stray away from the faith that they received. What are the reasons for their falling into complacency, becoming indifferent and even hostile towards Christ and the Christian Faith? The fault with many Catholics is that they think baptism is a graduation from having acquired knowledge and understanding of their faith. After completing their catechism classes or RCIA journey, they no longer seek out opportunities to continue growing their faith, both doctrinally and spiritually. Their only occasion to grow in faith is the one-hour Mass that they attend every Sunday. This is hardly enough to sustain the life of a Catholic. Those who do not grow in their faith are already losing their faith. There is no neutrality. How, then, can we grow in our faith? Firstly, we need to deepen our intimacy with God through Christ. In Christ, we come to know and love the Father. Secondly, we must be rooted in the Word of God. We cannot grow in our faith without deepening our love and appreciation for the Word of God through bible study and most of all, a prayerful reading and sharing of the Word of God. Thirdly, we must seek the support of the Christian community. A Catholic without the support of his fellow Catholics will eventually fall out from the faith, especially when he undergoes the trials and challenges of life, the influence of secularism, and the materialistic, individualistic and atheistic views of the world. Fourthly, to grow our faith, we need to evangelise and be a witness to Christ. We evangelise ourselves by evangelising others. By sharing our faith with others, we strengthen our own faith. By teaching our faith to others, we grow in understanding and clarity in what we believe in. Finally, growing in faith is to grow in our Christian life. This is the most effective form of witnessing. It means that those of us who are baptised must live a life of holiness and purity, free from sin and a bad conscience. A life of holiness and charity are the fruits of a strong spiritual life and a life of hope founded in the promises of God.

The persecution and opposition suffered by OT prophets must have deeply discouraged them, even as they knew they had been faithful to His instructions. But God has vindicated everything He asked them to speak about Him. In Christ, even in His own deepest distress, He acts so as "to fulfill the Scriptures". Truth Himself explains all that had been truly foretold about Him. I'd so love to have been on that road to Emmaus, and had that explanation given to me.

Dr.Pitre, your story of how this passage of Scripture guided you to develop your style of teaching is a great witness to the way Sacred Scripture is alive. This type of approach is exactly what the Church has been needing since the late 20th century and where does the solution come from? But from Christ after the Resurrection and His own methodology. Yep; in the clip, we don't see the climax of this account. The disciples only could discern Jesus in the breaking of the bread. Emmaus is a ways outside Jerusalem. Like seven miles, if not more. These two felt compelled to run back to Jerusalem to find the apostles. Also, we have Jesus walking through Sacred Scripture, offering the interpretation, and then breaking bread. Sound familiar?

Great stuff; if I had a choice, I'd like to imagine these two as Jesus' own relations of Mary and her husband Cleopas, and their description of Jesus as a 'prophet'. That they did noy recognise Jesus as 'Anointed, Lord and God' is what I believe was really meant by the Gospel writer as 'their eyes were kept from recognising him'. Thus his own relations lacked that knowledge of him, and they are upbraided (thanks Dr Pitre) thus. They lacked the faith to see the Truth. Always love what Dr Brand Pitre teaches in his word and writings! 🍷🍷

I doubt that's true. In Luke 1:2-3, the author seems to say he wasn't an eyewitness of these events, but someone who investigated them with the purpose of writing a more orderly, sequential account. This seems to be an acknowledgement of what Church fathers had said about St. Mark's gospel - that it was compiled from homilies and teachings of St. Peter (tradition holds that Mark was a scribe for Peter), but St. Mark had to guess as to some sequencing.

I would also like some sources - I have read the revelations to BL Anne Emmerich which do say the second disciple is Luke. Well, Mr. Pittre finally admitted what what I have been saying for more than a year now about his method: by putting emphasis on the OT. It is interesting and useful, but it is false when he says this was how Jesus Christ used to teach. In fact, all throughout the Gospels Our Lord teaches in the form of parables, by giving the New Covenant Law directly, being the Good Sheperd and by giving an example of sanctity. Furthermore, he performed miracles that only Jesus, God Himself, could do. Interpreting the OT were exceptions such as on the road to Emmaus and at the temple when Christ was still a child.

Any follower of Jesus Christ will definitely have to know the Hebrew Scriptures as these point to identifying who the Messiah is. The gospels and other books in the Greek scriptures quote from the Hebrew Scriptures many times. Even Jesus quoted the Hebrew Scriptures on several occasions. The bible is one unit. One cannot pick and choose books. They all interlock with the same theme. God's kingdom which Jesus asked his followers to pray for (Matthew 6:10).

Have you ever thought that the reason why the disciples didn't recognize Jesus because the appearance of Jesus changed. Which is why the disciples eventually do recognize Jesus. For instance Jesus being a Middle Eastern man most likely had olive colored skin and brown or dark colored hair. But in the Book of Revelation Jesus has burnished bronze colored skin and white as a lamb colored hair. I believe that the appearance of Jesus had been changed at the moment of His Resurrection. This would explain why people that He known didn't recognize Him at first but as they communed with Him they eventually recognized Him.

Only Sacred Tradition. This is one of the really fun bits of information for apologetics purposes. Jesus interprets the books of the Old Covenant, and while the interpretation is clearly referenced in Sacred Scripture, the interpretation itself is omitted (arguably, we can see traces of it later, like St. Stephen's defense, but as a whole, omitted). Yet it was important enough to Jesus to go through it twice within 24 hours of Resurrection - on the road to Emmaus with these two disciples, and then in Jerusalem with the apostles (minus Judas and Thomas). So, put yourself in their place. Jesus, who had just been executed, comes back and gives all the scriptural reasons why this all had to play out like it did. Are you going to remember what he said? I think I would, and think most of us would. I can't imagine how that wouldn't form the basis for Sacred Tradition, which these apostles would then pass down to others.

Why waste your time? John 5:39 "You pore over the Scriptures because you presume that by them you possess eternal life. These are the very words that testify about Me, 40 yet you refuse to come to Me to have life." In the account of the road to Emmaus, the Eucharist is revealed as the way to truly recognize Jesus. Roman Catholic theology teaches that a person can attend a thousand Masses, and still leave this life not fully purified, and go into Purgatory and have another thousand Masses read in their behalf, and still not be fully purified, because their attitude isn’t pure, and the attitude of the priest isn’t pure either. What a horrible trap. Absolutely horrible trap. Mystical mumbo-jumbo right out of the pit to take captive the souls of people.
