So special to come across this having heard it in Mass this morning (23 Apr 23). Your explanation of how it relates to Jesus both making himself known to us in the breaking of the bread and, always being with us in the Eucharist -- literally opened my eyes to today's Gospel!! Thank you, Dr Pitre. Clopas and the other disciple were not at the Last Supper. They may not have known what Jesus did there. Does this passage indicate they recognised Jesus in his risen body at Emmaus? That is, rather than recognising his Real Presence in the eucharist? So their story may have had greater significance for the Apostles than for themselves.

So even if we lose ourselves Christ always finds a way to find us through the power of the eucharist and through scripture? Meaning Christ never really left us yet prepared for us a path since the beginning of time because if none of it happened beginning with genysis then God himself couldn't have made us be saved but while we lost him he was and is constantly paving the way for us!!! Because their's was primarily an oral culture, and those teachings have been retained. If you want to know Jesus' interpretations on the Road to Emmaus, look at Sacred Tradition. Think of it this way: if you don't trust these two disciples to remember what they were taught, consider the next verses talk about Jesus that night also visiting the Twelve (minus Judas, of course, and Thomas), and Jesus ran through the same interpretations as he had for (at least) seven miles of walking over rough terrain. We're talking hours of content. This is the Resurrected Jesus, talking to ten of His apostles, within 24 hours of having left the grave. Don't you think the apostles would remember what was said? Don't you think they would pass on this teaching? Sacred Tradition. Some of it appears in Sacred Scripture - St. Stephan gives us a snippet, and St. Paul gives us some of the typology, but not to the depth we know.

But the parallel with the Mass continues. When Jesus disappears what do they do? They rush back to Jerusalem to tell everyone what has happened. And of course this is what we should do too at the end of the Mass.

I would like to point something else out if I may..... and daddy is that any Emmaus, Jesus only gave himself to them under the Accidents of one kind..... that is in the Bread, being his total and complete Glorified Body, blood heart soul humanity and divinity ( just under this new form )..... which means to me that when we go to mass and receive Jesus only under the species of the bread, and we may not necessarily be offered the chalice, that we too, just like them at Emmaus, are receiving him totally..... because unfortunately some Catholics believe that if you do not receive him under both kinds then you are not receiving the complete Christ but this scripture Passage shows us differently, directly from Jesus Christ Hmself :-)

@@ewaldradavich7307 that's a Protestant website, they teach many false doctrines no thank you. Jesus said "This is my Body", he also said "my flesh is true meat, and my blood is true drink". We see how his disciples recognized him in the breaking of the bread, and how Christ did stay with them as they asked, but in the bread. Paul writes how if you eat the bread or drink the wine unworthily, you are guilty of the body and blood of the Lord, because Paul knows that's it's the body, blood, soul, and Divinity of Christ, under the appearance of bread and wine.
