hey i just wanted to share some of my thoughts and maybe you can discuss about this in some video quarantine aftermath is not a survival game its a game with health, hunger, and thirst. there's a massive difference imo survival games are composed of 3 things: 1. pragmatism 2. hardship with time 3. prelapsarianism the game isn't very good with its survival aspects as much as its fps aspects (guns dont work in survival games at all but thats for another story). sure your hunger and thirst drops overtime, and you need to maintain it, but that's about it. all 'survival' games have this issue- there's no genuine hardships or aspects of survival which encourages pragmatic, adaptable response to their environment. you also aren't tied necessarily to your character. project zomboid is a perfect oppsite of this. lets think of survival as Marx's graph of progress, though it doesn't really tie into here. we have an thesis, antithesis, and then a synthesis. some timeframe, humanity makes progress, the thesis; but then it goes back in even more progress, the antithesis; and finally the synthesis, what is a culmination of the thesis and antithesis. lets apply this to the individual in some arbitrary realistic survival game, and factor in their hardships- the thesis is a jump in progress, whether it's crafting something which aids survival massively e.g. a sleeping-bag to improve sleep, a makeshift bandaid to reduce bloodloss, or a reflector to reflect wind or heat which helps regulate temperature throughout a hot day for example. the antithesis is a complication which occurs from the thesis, by definition. the reflector is too heavy to carry, and thus you've wasted materials. or maybe the makeshift bandaid becomes dirty and allows the transfer of infection into your body. or maybe the sleeping bag, with it's openness, allows bugs into it, which gives you some illness. the synthesis is an agreement between the thesis and antithesis. i got a bandaid, but it's dirty, so i wash it, and if that doenst work for some unpredictable reason, i make a new one. with illnesses, you cure them with some medication or you endure its effects until it goes. with an item being too heavy, you drop it onto the ground, or other items onto the ground. that IS pragmatism, or it is a gold example of cause and effect which fits into pragmatism nicely. as an example, in this game, using a bandaid makes it give you health and vanishes entirely. there's no incentive to manage that bandaid and make sure it doesn't cause issues. that is not hardship. or in this game, you can easily find food to survive, but if you don't, and your hunger reaches 0, you slowly lose health. additionally you have too big a window to cure your hunger. you know what your hunger is constantly, and you know food is ubiquitous. that's not hardship. lastly prelapsarianism pretty much means in my definition, before the modern world. project zomboid in-game overtime approaches prelapsarianism with its worldbuilding. a time before technology. a time where you cant refrigerate food because of a lack of power. contemporary times devolve into monkey times. aftermath lacks this type of worldbuilding survival experiences are rare in video gaming. project zomboid is the only game i know that has survival. roblox has quite literally NO survival games- i've searched for hours maybe. my own game which im making will have true survival just like PZ. my own game plug: Corautmors is a one-life hardcore zombie survival game set 1000 years into the future in a vegetation-filled city. it has a focus on cleanliness and time. i dont want to share too many details, but there will be a devlog on my channel in some time. itll be cool
