Totally agree. He's taken the character to a completely different level and it seems like the epitome of his wrestling and acting careers have diverged together to create a performer who is in complete control of the audience and plot. It's quite amazing to see an almost 52 year old who's been away from being a full time performer for 20 years be this good. He's carrying the whole show and cementing the legacy of him and his peers from The Attitude Era. I've been watching wrestling for 40 years and I'm trying to remember who Rock's current character reminds of. He seems to have taken Mick Foley's Cactus Jack character, Harley Race's calm smoothness, and Rowdy Piper's crazed persona and brought them all together. Truly fantastic.

The reason why people like Kane and Brock Lesnar was scary growing up was we just saw them as actual psychopaths. @carlosnieves50937 ай бұрын
Chael absolutely nailed this.. I don't think I've seen anyone else verbalize the process Dwayne Johnson went through to get to this point as accurately as described in this video. Make no mistake about it. Johnson put himself in that position by trying to Inject himself at the championship main event match at the 11th hour, after a current star (Rhodes) has earned their spot in the context of the narrative. Fans wanted Rock vs Reigns but not at the detriment of a current long term storyline of another full time star. It was a bad call by Johnson to push this and he should've known better. However it happens to be that the pivot in the narrative leading to the main events we have now for night 1 and 2, still leading to the eventual Rock v.s Reigns at WM41; With the intent to achieve the ultimate goal as originally intended.. Putting over Reigns in a redemption arc as a babyface, beating a vicious heel Rock to get there. The WM40 route was a last sec, fast track attempt by Johnson to do it which I believe would've had little to no chance of success being rejected by the fans. Whereas with Rock as the heel now, the year long storytelling of Reigns losing everything and earning his place with some semblance of humility could have a higher possibility of success come WM41.

I love Chael but he knows very little about current wrestling so I can fill you in a bit on the actual status quo. When WWE fans heard that Wrestlemania was going two days, they were definitely apprehensive about the change but on the whole it's been massively well received for this reason. Wrestlemania had gotten to be a one-night roughly 7 hour event, more if you were there in person. It was just too long. Nobody had any buzz for the end of the show, you were spent. Now it's two nights, 4-ish hours of main card action per night, maybe 4.5 if you want to watch a match on the pre-show but the pre-show now has fewer matches and more fluff than it used to. So the two night thing is much better for fans generally. This change was made, not two as Chael claimed, but about four years ago at WM36. Obviously Wrestlemania wasn't on last week, it's on this weekend. Not only had the 'two day thing' been considered in sport before, but wrestling's largest ever gate was in North Korea in 1995 at a two-day event, headlined by Ric Flair and Antonio Inoki in front of a claimed 190,000 people. This is aside from the fact that plenty of the biggest events in sports take place over many days. In football - the World Cup, in cricket - The Ashes, not all of these are directly applicable because of the nature of s Wrestlemania or a Superbowl, but the point stands. As mentioned, the first two night event was Wrestlemania 36. It was in April of 2020. So not only was it not a sell-out event, there were literally no fans in attendance. The next year at WM37, fans were allowed back but it was not a huge stadium event, as there were allocation for 25,000 fans and neither night sold out. I'm not sure if the events since have sold out but WWE is booming right now so the best chance they would have for that would be this year. As to whether or not The Rock was genuinely caught off-guard by the Wrestlemania build is still out for debate. More people would tend to agree that WWE shifted plans, but the jury is still out. All the stuff about why The Rock came back is probably true. I have no idea what 'there's only been 10 in the history of the business who have come in with a strategy' means. The idea that Rock wouldn't have agreed to come back as a heel is ludicrous. Everyone knows that being a heel in wrestling is more fun. You get to cuss out the audience, be your inner asshole. It's also Rock's bread and butter. He got over as a heel, much of his best work is as a heel. He's been a PR machine in Hollywood, shaking hands and kissing babies for 15 plus years now. Now tell me, after that time, wouldn't you love the ability to look right into the eyes of a fan, a shitty interviewer, your detractors and say 'fuck you'. He seems to be loving what he's doing now more than at any point since he left in 2003. Whether this was the plan or not, he could've gotten on board with being a heel with the right angle, and now they have it. Plenty of people have been up-front about how getting a negative reaction when you're supposed to be a face is. Cena, Roman, why only in the past few weeks, Booker T leaked that Sami Zayn was upset with the online and wider reaction that he got the IC title match instead of Chad Gable. This idea that the fans revolting about bigger stars being awarded Wrestlemania spots than the full-time roster is anything but new. You can go back AT LEAST to CM Punk's pipebomb: 'but the fact that I'm not in the Wrestlemania main event but Dwayne is makes me sick' - 2011. And fans mirrored these sentiments many times. It's part of what got Daniel Bryan so over from 2012 - 2014, Punk in 2011, heck, Cena v. RVD in 2006. Fans have always rebelled when they've been told they need to eat shit and like it, and they've hijacked shows because of it, Wrestlemania being no exception. The angle that he's explaining for The Rock isn't one that he's actually taken though, that doesn't really map to what's been happening. Rock has been acting completely justified in the way he's conducted himself, instead claiming Cody Rhodes and his fans ruined Wrestlemania, not just for him, but for ALL the wrestling fans. Cody deprived us of something once in a lifetime. Another interesting wrinkle about Rock now, as Chael mentioned towards the end, is that he's on the TKO board of directors, the parent company or collectively company WWE represents. That means he is technically the boss or the authority over the wrestlers, and there is something scary in that. He can do what he likes and he's not gonna be punished for it in a kayfabe sense. Chael is still cappin, he's using a basis of a story which hasn't even been established to be true as the basis for complimenting it. Hope that gave more insight to any non-wrestling fans that could be bothered to endure all these writings, I know that was long.

Hey Chael. Why do you think Cody’s mom is dead? I think he was bringing her up because she was probably watching her son on tv. I feel like if both cody’s parents were dead he would have brought up Dusty as he’s the one that is well known? I stopped watching wrestling about 14 yrs ago, but i keep up with it sometimes and the rock coming back is very intriguing. P.s. you are one of my favorite fighters and the best and most sensible trash talker in the history of MMA, which i feel makes people forget how good you are at actually fighting. you completely out struck Anderson Silva in his prime and out boxed Rampage at like 40 when you are primarily supposed to be “just a wrestler” . Hope you see this comment. Much love.

2 nights was a good idea, more time to showcase the roster they have and more people get the opportunity to be on the show

Making Wrestlemania a two night event was a great idea, look how long the single nights were getting AND two nights allows more talent to get on.

Exactly. And if NJPW hadn’t set a successful blueprint the WWE would never have tried it. They ain’t stupid!
