Two reasons. One, it was originally a British creature... with everything British in it, except for the two American actors, Brad and Janet. (Same happened with Monty Python and the Holy Grail.) Also, the studio did not believe in it, and wanted to bury it... Without marketing, it had no real chance in the theatres. But then the college scene picked it up a few years later - and the rest is history.

I think people just didn't know what to make of it (first time I saw it, I really didn't). Just one of those things that needed time to grow on people and become a cult classic.

@@bendegoose9339 Um, Richard O'Brian is a Kiwi, and the director of both the original London and LA stage productions AND the movie itself, Jim Sharman, is an Australian, as is Brian Thomson, the production designer of the movie and original stage productions. In 60s and 70s there was a massive influx of Australian and New Zealander writers, artists, actors, musicians, etc, to the UK and Rocky Horror is just one result of this golden zeitgeist.

I saw it in San Diego the first week it came out. The theater wasn't full, but it was far from empty. I saw no hype or publicity for it, just decided to go to a movie that night and looked in the paper to see what was on. You are right it wasn't on in a lot of theaters, but I went again about 10 days - 2 weeks later (different theater) and the place was packed. It was transforming into a cult that quickly.

You know what makes the Rocky Horror Picture show so amazing? The actor who plays riff raff is the one who wrote the entire movie and all of the songs. Before it became a movie, the actors who play Magenta, Riff Raff, and Franken Feruter (probably spelled wrong lmao) performed this show live in theaters for 3 years. Also, Tim Curry was so use to doing his own makeup that after day 1 of shooting they let him do it himself!

This movie is so dear to my heart. I was in 9th grade gym class, and there was a weird kid wearing a button that said “I can’t even think straight” this was the 90s when everything was “gay”. I pointed and laughed and said “HA HA YOU’RE A GAAAY” He said “yeah..” and he instantly became my BFF. Found out he lived right across the street from me, we had the same birthday. We became inseparable. Learned his mom was gay too and they invited me over for movie night and it was this movie. They took me to pride fest and gave me the best memories and friendship I could ever ask for. Every time I see this I think of them 🖤

For anyone that doesn't know, those are Magenta's lips and Riff Raff's voice. There's a story behind that, as well. Patricia Quinn (Magenta) wanted nothing to do with the film, at first, so Richard O'Brian (Riff Raff) did everything he could to convince her. In the end, they both agreed that as long as she got to sing this song for the opening she would do the film. All went according to plan.....until it came time to edit the film. During that process O'Brian replaced her vocals with his own.....behind her back, no less. She didn't find out about it until she watched it for the first time and by then it was too late.

There's a timeless quality to this song I feel; while layered with nostalgia and memories it also feels like time won't dull this tune and you can even listen to it without watching the rest of the movie as it perfectly captures a certain time and the concept of late night flicks in general. Truly something to cherish and keep listening to again and again through the years 💖

I think you're right, and the funny part about that is how absolutely steeped in its own time and place it was. I mean, you have to know a thing or two about 1950's-1970's movies to get any of the references, or even know what a "double feature" is.

RHPS makes me sad now. I am sad for Tim. I am sad I didnt get it then. I miss the thrill of seeing this in theatres (often). Maybe Its projection, but I cry at most of the songs. I feel sadly sophomoric, Yet it effects me so cripplingly. How can it be so long ago. When did my youth slip by without me being in charge of it??

I grew up in a very free minded household, I was 9 years old singing this whole album but still never actually seen the movie at that point. My mom knew I wanted to see it I knew every song by heart. The only place it was showing was a triple x theater as there matinee!!! Lmfao for real! But she checked into and was sort of sure that I wouldn’t see previews of porn if we got there after a certain time and left promptly after! So we got dressed up and brought all of our props for the show because luckily for me this was an interactive showing and people in the audience squirted water guns for song “there’s a light over in the Frankenstein place” and we had news papers and on and on all the key points acted out! My favorite of course was “time warp “ good memories and thank you mom for not being a prude!!!!!!!!!❤️✌️

This is an awesome sharing Michele. I used to lie to my parents and tell them it was a different ending every time. Thats why we had to see it every week lol. Early 80s was a time we had to be inventive. Well, lie. There was no internet so they had to root thru our stuff to find out what we were up to lol.

I saw this film classic in the 1970s and was completely smitten, mesmerized. The opening song was akin to Beethoven's Ode to Joy and played homage to a period of innocence and exuberance. Pure unadulterated fun & bliss. This song sank deep into my unconscious psyche. I lived life in the 1950s and indeed went frequently to the local late-night double feature picture shows in my home town. I saw Tarantula in 1955 when it came out and had nightmares for years afterward. I saw Dana Andrews in the 1957 " Curse of the Demon " the source of which was "Casting the Runes". And it was today nearly 70 years after the fact that I happened to see Dana Andrews, white hair and wizened face, doing a guest appearance on an old re-run episode of "Love Boat". I knew that face and gradually came to his name "Dana Andrews". And once I had called up the name, "Dana Andrews" - these lyrics and music flowed forth in my mind . . Michael Rennie was ill The Day the Earth Stood Still But he told us where we stand And Flash Gordon was there In silver underwear Claude Rains was The Invisible Man . . And I really got hot When I saw Janette Scott Fight a Triffid that spits poison and kills Dana Andrews said "Prunes!" Gave him the runes And passing them used lots of skills. All I could think about was: Dana Andrews said "Prunes!" Gave him the runes and passing them used lots of skills" I agree with the comment above: Please stand for the National Anthem.

This song is so interesting. It's so easy to listen to outside of the context of rocky horror considering it's an amazing song, but when you watch it with those horrifying disembodied lips, it sends the perfect signal to the audience that this movie is going to be WEIRD! It's amazing!

In the Summer of 1978 I was 14 and myself and a few friends took the bus to see this in a midnight show. The suburbs were different in the 70's- Our parents didn't know where we were, nor cared. It didn't occur to any one of us that the busses didn't run after midnight. So, when the movie was over, we hitchhiked home. Actually walked most of the way. The 70's in the suburbs of NYC. Can't imagine a better time to grow up.

I was made to wade in a pool of KY and pick out the bananas with my mouth, without leaving tooth marks. Then I had to stuff a giant size H brassiere with hot dogs lubricated in KY before a timer rang a bell. The brassiere had to be, as they put it, "plump, perky, and juicey,"by the time the timer rang. This was hard to do with lubricated hotdogs slipping everywhere and slipping out of the brassiere. There was also whip cream boobs that I had to eat the cherry nipple off the boobs without letting the cherry slip down nor damage the whip cream boobs while blindfolded. There were a few other rituals I had to do before being devirginised. After being devirginised, I got a spiked dog collar with my name on it. It is now one of my most prized possessions.

@@cameronkantor8224 My last showing was in 2009. It was in a small town named Story, Indiana. It was an outside viewing. What a mess we left! Where I used to reside locally, the last showing was in 2000. But I kept going to Story, Indiana and got nine more years of Rocky. The very last showing in Story was a well known event. It was going to be the last showing there. Since it was an outside showing, the disaster we left was extra huge! Some people brought in condoms filled with KY to start a fight. Super soakers filled whip cream, many blow up dolls made it to the last showing with bananas and hotdogs stuffed in their mouths. Brassiere slingshots for water balloons were common. Pie fights would break out randomly. When things, started getting too quiet, the hosts would sound a siren and start throwing all manner of hotdogs, bananas, sausages, condoms, diaphragms, dirty underwear, dog collars, sex toys and feather boas. I really miss showings. It was the only time I was social. I would break my social isolation today if I knew there was a showing. I can remain anonymous and have a great times with others!

I was obsessed with this movie when I was a teenage in the early 90's I first saw it when I was visiting relatives and they had a VHS bootleg from Japan. Apparantly, it was released on VHS from Japan long before the US. I made a copy while I was there, sure, it had Japanese subtitles, but who cared?. I played it for the first time for my mom and she was hooked from this song. She is a huge old school and B-Movie horror fan. Just from the mentions in the song and naming the movies they came from, she was good to go.

In Criminal Minds, there was an episode called, "The Longest Night." Tim Curry starred as the Prince of Darkness Killer. He played the role masterfully! He was a complete disaster in that episode. He had nasty teeth, dirty clothes, drove a disgusting 1980 camper covered in rust and dirt. He was a complete psycho in that episode. It is my favourite Criminal Minds episode ever.
