This is the most surprising release of last years Rolex line up. With the unexpected discontinuation of the Cellini this was Rolex answer, the 1908! Here is a model that I particularly like. I feel that this is the answer to the Patek Callatrava from Rolex!

Personally I prefer the JLC ultrathin moonphase. But happy to see a dress watch from Rolex, I’m curious to sees where model range goes. If there will be a 1908 moonphase or perpetual calendar. Platinum and steel and a midnight blue dial would be a nice edition to the line.

I have the code 1159 chronograph in the blue fume dial in the rose gold case, an amazing and well thought out design from the holy trinity. I’d rather save and get the Patek over the 1908 in a minute. You purchase what you like and wear daily, no watch should only be reserved for special occasions. Wear them all the time regardless of where you are going. Another excellent video, thank you, Eric.

The code 11.59 is by far the most important launch in the last decade, it's what you can call a comprehensive and complete line that can go from simple to high complications with from my opinion an iconic case design that Rolex would never dare to make, as for the 1908 I would bench mark with definitely Chopard LUC which is leagues ahead of it.

Eric, it’s pronounced Chellineee not Cellini - 1908 is a wannabe calatrava! I made my AD weep when I said I’d rather pay £10k more and have a calatrava. I went the very day and got one from my Patek AD and a few days later rocked it. My AD - Rolex, admitted it was more beautiful than a 1908. Unbelievable BUT TRUE! I hear you Kemo

​@@ricflair8863I agree completely, even though I had the funds to buy a Patek annual calendar but I was curious what the service costs might be, a dealer said it's around 4k USD for a full service through Patek's official service center. Although I probably won't need one in 6-7 years, I'm not willing to spend that much and decided that I can't afford the watch. Which reminds me, having the funds to buy something doesn't necessarily mean being able to truly afford it.

Still haven't seen one in person, and from pictures the dial looks curiously flat. It's also strange that they would opt for a syloxi hairspring. Frankly, there are better options at this price point, and it's a shame the old Cellini never appealed to anyone, the Prince with its nicely finished movement was lovely, as was the moonphase.

It looks great. My problem is the price. I rather buy a pre-owned Patek, VC patrimony or Lange (or even Chopard LUC) for that money. With a proper hand finished movement. For a non-hand finished movement this watch would need to be $5k lower.

Everose was never an option on the 1908. I believe Eric is mistaken. Yellow gold or white gold only. However, I’m sure Everose will make an appearance in the 1908 line soon enough.

I not a big fan of the numbers on the watch face, it reminds me too much of the Explorer. Using a different color on the inside of the leather strap was a very nice touch. I could see some further development there.

Nice watch. The last Cellini was also nice. But the direction in which Rolex is going with the dress watch seems correct. Great review. Keep it up. I myself would go for a Moritz Grossman dress watch instead of a Calatrava.

I saw the first one of these in my AD today. It is stunning. Yellow gold is muted. White dial is matt and almost creamy. A wonderful looking watch. Very tempted. £19,300 here in the UK. Bargain!

I love it, but I think one would do better with a vintage calatrava, pre-owned VC Patrimony, or a JLC master ultra thin. To take this 1908 over those, you have to really just prefer rolex as a brand, otherwise, the others do it better IMO. It's nice to see though.

I think this watch is a prime example that brands have certain strong suits and the black tie dress watch isn't for Rolex. There is a slight improvement in areas from the Celinni. However, it looks too much of a hybrid between the Celinni and a Calatrava. Dress watches need a ton of restraint but complexity at the same time. The open case back isn't really a selling point here. The dial is the key feature which could use the most attention to differentiate it from being a low priced Calatrava.

I said the same thing . The moment the 1908 came out I said Whitegold with the matte black dial is the winner . I love rose gold and yes if they had a platinum model then I’d pick platinum all day (I’m sure it’s coming . It’ll probably have baguette hour markers 💎 🔥 that’d be killer Or a platinum 1908 with the glacier dial (maybe baguettes) 🥶 It’s probably be priced at like $48.5-56K

unfortunately Patek owns that space that callatrava with the hobnail is just next level. The 1908 is stunning, that vintage toned matt dial finish is the same as the WG skydweller. You could rock the shit out of that 1908 on a regular basis and really enjoy it not just use it sparingly like a calltrava though .

A see through case back on a Rolex is a low key cost cut. It doesn’t make it more valuable like you mentioned. It cheapens it. I’d rather have a solid piece of gold than a cheap sapphire crystal. Same with the new platinum Daytona.

1908 is too too bland comparing to PP Calatrava dominating dress watch or AP Code for complication reference. However, I get that there is no reason for Rolex to make most of us exciting in design or technical advancement. Just the name Rolex/ Heritage/ Resale value, many folks here would be fine.
