This song was on the album “Let It Bleed” which came out on November 28, 1969. “Gimmie Shelter” was about the atrocities of war because the Vietnam war was raging at the time. For many people it’s Merry Clayton’s haunting vocals that really make this song so fantastic.

Mary Clayton's voice break is iconic. You can just hear Mick go "woo" afterwards. She was 20 years old and was called out of bed to sing. She showed up with curlers. She apologized for the "break" and wanted to do it over. They said "No", they loved it, as do all who hear it.
@JeffreyCantelope26 күн бұрын
I recently saw an interview with Jaggaer and they palyed that voice break part and you see his face that saud "yeah that still is brilliant"
@robertpetre9378Ай бұрын
This is definitely one of those songs that you would hear on every single Vietnam War film in the 60s
@Bikebrh2 ай бұрын
That is probably the most famous voice crack in recorded music history. In the last take, Merry Clayton decided to really blow it out, and her voice cracked in the process. Mick and Keith loved it, so they left it in.
@fuchsiaswing85452 ай бұрын
I am glad you recognized Charlie’s drumming. Indeed, it’s nothing flashy, but those thudding drum fills really capture the dark undertones of the song.
@ls19592 ай бұрын
Charlie's drumming is an underrated aspect of this classic song. Often of course Mary Clayton's singing is the first thing mentioned. The antiwar theme is timeless. The introduction to the song may be among the greatest in rock history. But Charlie's drumming really provides the power and pop that takes this song into the stratosphere.

Oh heck yes! Rolling Stones. Same era as the Beatles. I loved the Stones and the Beatles. They have many great songs also. Paint It Black, Satisfaction, Sympathy for the Devil, She's A Rainbow, Midnight Rambler and The Last Time. That's just a few.

The voice crack, a shot heard round the world!
@fredsanford59542 ай бұрын
At the 'voice crack' part where Merry is singing 'Rape-murder' you can hear Mick or Keith in the background going "whoa". She wanted to do it over, but they thought it was awesome so they left it in. Dark and intense song, like riding a chopper into a hot landing zone (Vietnam war was going on att).
@leinie66832 ай бұрын
I love how , back in those days, a mistake or sometimes several are just left in the recording. Not like todays sanitized, pitch corrected, autotuned. time snapped garbage.
@fedogma84072 ай бұрын
This also goes to show how the present trend of auto-tuning everything to "perfection" often destroys the emotion in the voice and even instruments. It was brilliance to leave that "mistake" in because it really wasn't a mistake..

How did I miss this? Your reaction I mean. The song is encoded in my DNA. That's what happens when you don't subscribe. There. Done. Always happy to help a brother out. "The drums.." Yes! Not flamboyant but perfect, just the right accents. Good catch. Merry Clayton owns this song. The voice crack was the high point. Pure soul. "Whoa.." Correct. I believe she was pregnant when this was recorded. I don't know if that is relevant or not

If you're open to a suggestion, your reactions may gain more traction with some observations about the lyrics, at least with a song rhis powerful. I know with great music like in this one, it's easy to overlook but theyre a part of its greatness.
