I gotta disagree with you this time I forgot his name (Carson Plamers' brother) a Qb guru said Caleb's biggest issue is this is his first time stugggling to do something, and from watching the examples you choose that's also what I see a guy who was a superior athlete now also surrounded with superior athletes. He needs better coaching but he'll improve next year somewhat regardless but if he gets some better coaching he'll be just fine.

As a Lions fan, the dude definitely struggled, but he’s a rookie. Some of those mistakes are VERY fixable. Considering he kept his interceptions down because he doesn’t want to turn the ball over, I can see he cares about keeping the ball out of harms way and giving his team a chance. However, he’s REALLY got to get a better line and most importantly, improve his reads. I’d be more concerned if the guy were reading the field like Desmond Ridder

Honestly I wouldn’t look at the low turnovers as someone who “cares about keeping the ball out of harms way” as much as I’d see it as a QB afraid to make plays. He’s either throwing to wide open WRs or taking sacks. Sacks are drive killers and wide open rarely happens in the NFL. An NFL QB needs to be willing to throw the ball into tighter windows. If he’s only willing to throw to wide open WRs, he won’t be in the league long.

I think you didn't watch the video. Caleb generally can read defensive looks well and is VERY potent within his first few reads when he understands the post-snap coverage he's looking at. He'll throw to his 1/2 progressions with good timing and anticipation. So saying he only plays backyard football is fairly disingenuous. Where he struggles is when teams give him exotic looks post-snap that he's just not seen enough of, because he's a rookie or doesn't study enough. Couple that with his struggles throwing deep this year, poor o-line play, and you get a rookie QB whose easy to pass rush and limit the areas of the field he can throw to. Although Rollins harps on it a lot here. Caleb isn't necessarily sticking on his first read a lot. He's trying to play within the system he's been given and just isn't good enough at it yet, and as Rollins points out, the scheme under Waldron just wasn't that good. Receivers running the same routes, etc etc. He should progress if he ever gets competent coaching or gets some help converting the deep ball. His deep ball was never really an issue in college so I think he just needs to be unleashed a bit more mentally. It's almost like he's stunned and won't throw a 50/50 ball for fear of it getting picked. That needs to change or he'll never get it down.

The funny thing about this is a lot of it comes down to reading leverage which Caleb himself admitted earlier in the season that he didn’t have to do in college. He wasn’t asked to read the safeties or corners’ leverage so he struggled with that as a rookie. Which is why coaching matters. These are fixable issues. He’s gotten better as the season has gone on but scheme and poor protection have made the results the same. Get a good offensive coach in Chicago and he can and will still be special. It’s no reason to sell stock on him right now. Get that man good coach in and see what he can do. Patrick freaking Mahomes said he couldn’t read defenses fully until after his second year. But was excellent throughout because his coaching and the scheme allowed him to make plays. That’s what a great coach does. Give the Bears Ben Johnson, or Joe Brady, or a Liam Coen and see what Caleb can do with the expected improvements to the OL this off-season. Also, on the anticipation stuff, a lot of rookies struggle with that when they haven’t started as many games in college. Caleb only started 2 and a half years under a college scheme. He’ll continue to get better and expect coverages better. That play with the drop by Odunze you showed was excellent and an example of his improvement. Earlier in the he wouldn’t have made that throw.

This is why coaching matters and is important. All these bad habits he has it seems his quarterback coach has yet to work with him in fixing that. This is what I expected honestly sure he’s a generational talent, but that means absolutely nothing if you can’t at least perform good enough to win. Tom said it best your asking a lot of these rookie’s quarterbacks to start so early instead of having them sit and learn for a year. Yeah sure there are some outliers, but this what a rookie season looks like a lot of the times for quarterbacks. When you hold the ball for too long, when your anticipation and timing isn’t good, deep ball accuracy, not understanding pre snap or post snap. All the things can easily be fixed with the right coach.

Glad you chose his worst two games of the season to get your points across. There are valid criticisms of his play related to his surprisingly poor deep ball accuracy and taking too many sacks, but considering how horrendous his oline has played, multiple different OCs, and overall poor effort by skill position players I feel like those factors are a major part of why you say it "looks bad". Looking back, when keenan allen said that Waldron didn't keep their offensive players accountable during practice by letting them go easy on certain things, I feel like that just shows up in actual game speed when there is a clear disconnect between the wr and qb a lot of the time.

Why do NFL teams keep doing this? Protect your franchise by protecting the qb and you do that by letting him sit and learn slowly while you build up the rest of the team around him.

@@romain8390 People need to stop blaming coaching. The main reason he can't read defenses and throws inaccurately is because he's too short to see over the lines. That's why he almost always has to roll out or back from the pocket. As Notre Dame showed, the key is to contain/collapse him in the pocket. As more DCs figure this out, he'll likely bust, because height isn't fixable, except through elite scrambling, but he's not fast enough, nor is he intimidating. He's slower & smaller than Justin Fields.

That’s Russell, Wilson, Kyler, Murray, or Bryce Young, who are 5’11” or under. tua Tagovailoa is 6’1”, and he’s never had a problem seeing over the middle common in fact that’s where he gets a big chunk of his yardage over over the last three seasons. it is 100% the coach, I’m not an apologist for Caleb Williams, but people are 100% about to fall into the same trap that they did with Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield, and Geno Smith, it is 100% the coaching because when he had a confident college coach, he won the Heisman, and he had a good 2023 season without showing any major red flags. I think you just want to be right because you were fatigued of the prospect, which tends to happen when a guy is projected as a number one overall pick for multiple years, and it’s understandable. Cant say I'm surprised TBH. Ryans and Stroud are the exception that to me, prove the rule. If you're drafting a QB in the top of round 1, you'd better have a HC or at worst an OC who has shown they know how to generate offense. Keeping Eberflus was like buying a plane to get around but letting your uber driver fly the plane because he got you around the year before. Not even a particularly good driver, either. Plenty of dings, dents, and fender benders but because he didnt crash in a fireball and the conversation was plesant, you let him fly the plane at the airport. If I'm the owner that alone would be reason to fire Poles. "You let the uber driver fly the plane and your reasoning is he didnt total the car on the way there? Only minor dings." And because he kept eberflus who everyone knew should have been fired, the only OC you could convince to come co-pilot this suicide mission of letting the Uber driver fly the jet, was fired because he couldn't fly a paper plane. What awful decision making from Poles. One of many. I was out on Calebs mentality when he ran to his mother to cry, but he had no shot of doing anything with that situation. I just hope the damage isnt permanently going to hurt him because he is so damn talented. We will learn a lot about him next year but there is a 0% chance I let Poles stay if Im running the Bears.

@@TheKezsimpson there were points earlier this season when Bears Fan were arguing whether or not Caleb was throwing with too much anticipation. Him and his receivers wouldn't be on the same page so he would sometimes airmail a ball like 5 yards or more from any player even though he would have a WR come wide open. Not due to inaccuracy, but because he would throw before they break on a route, but the receivers would break differently than Caleb expected or would stop running entirely. He does lack the ability to read exotic defensive post-snap looks well, but that's hard for any QB. So no real surprise there for a rookie. You move to your check down then. But in the Seahawks game, Caleb tried this and they would have the check down covered too sometimes so he was just fucked 😂 That problem in the Seahawks game sort of stems from his inability or lack of will to throw deep. When a team is giving you constant pressure and 1 high looks, you will always have opportunities to throw 50/50 deep balls. If you never punish the defense, they'll just keep blitzing. Which they did and totally paralyzed Caleb. His issue isn't anticipation, but post snap reads, leverage reads, and deep ball accuracy like you highlighted.

This is what I’ve said the whole season: he has the physical talent and the unteachable “instinct” that allows him to make some of the crazy plays he has throughout the season, but he just is not comfortable operating routine plays on an nfl level. Again, he has the talent to do so, but the coaching has done absolutely nothing to help him and his confidence is only worsened by the constant untouched rushers sacking him 1 second after the snap. I don’t think this is an issue of him not being able to play/read the field on an nfl level as much as it is a confidence issue caused by the constant failures of the team as a whole. We point to good play calls that Caleb mishandled, but most people ignore the constant awful play calls in which no one is open for way too long and Caleb gets hit. He has never really found any momentum that has allowed him to feel confident in his ability to make throws. When every other play is an awfully designed one, it’s a lot harder to operate the well designed ones.

His coach was worst in the NFL by a large margin, his OC got fired faster than the coach, not even utilizing captains on the team like Kmet, and his Oline has 1 starter that would start on another team. IDK why people like to be quick to judge rookies... I would be judging the team for putting him in this position more than anything, with how much draft capital and cap room they had knowing full damn well they were selecting a rookie qb they did about as poor of a job as you could possibly do. Then the GM doubled down on the shitty coach even when the previous qb Justin literally called out coaching as an issue. People are just stupid and like to think that because there are receivers with some talent means "best situation ever" I would argue coach is most important piece for situation =fail then OC= fail then Oline =fail THHHHEEEENNNN I would even put running game = fail lastly I would put receiving weapons = they did okay actually. and that's all without mentioning the bears garbage ownership george mclaskey who is the biggest loser in sports today....
