This song is somewhat an open letter to Malik B, his partner in rhyme, the 2nd vocalist/MC of the crew. Water, in Philly, is slang for promethazine, also known as syrup. Malik, an exceptional lyricist, let the water drown him. He's still alive but his vice sorta took hold of him at 1 point, so Riq wrote this 4 him. Listen 2 the CDQ version and digest the lyrics. Shout 2 Malik...a Philly legend. From ya youngbul from Sp B@ne.

Cool! This is a great song, I love the way they took Malik's problems straight on. The Roots are incredible live, I need to see them again.

I can dig it man I'm a drummer myself, primarily jazz/fusion and funk; so I can respect that they do more than just rap or perform one style of music. My dad was real big on the Beasti Boyz...he was a young adult back in the late 80's when they came out, while I was just a lil kid buggin off of RUN-DMC. I think if I saw one of their live shows I'd probably feel what they do more. They had a joint in the late 90's that I liked, in the video they were dressed like detectives or sumthin..

Black Thought doesn't make mistakes. Most rappers gotta have like 2-3 hype-men, he's got 1 or 2, dependin on the song, and its not cuz he needs em, they just make for an incredible show.

..and I think that they are hiphop's best band. I wish we had more hiphop band that played real instruments like this... Don't get me wrong, I'm all for drum samples and sped-up records, but you know, more real instruments performances like this won't hurt.

@DaanOFF321 When you hear Malik's verses on "do you want more" they are as original, as entertainining and as skilled as Black Thoughts. Along the way, black Thought started lapping him. But I held out great hope after I heard the guest verses on "Game Theory", it seemed a return to old form. I hope he is doing well, and also hope, selfishly, that he is penning more verses...(cause I can't what to hear them ["Money long like arms on Alonzo Morning"]). More of that please.

This song is so dope! They were supposed to perform at Umass Boston where I go to school, but unfortunately they canceled. That was a good time that I was supposed to have but that never happened.
@Joaoc8615 жыл бұрын
No problem with that we all have different tastes. They play instruments and actually started as a punk band but yeah I wouldn't exactly call them a hip-hop band, they play instruments live but it's usually funk-jazz or punk songs not really on hip-hop songs.
@toblerusseta11 жыл бұрын
Thanks for posting this. I wasn't aware of that sample. The roots are my all time favourite and seeing them live is a thrill for sure. Gotta say tho, to your point, If every hip hop band mentioned who they were sampling in every song then you would have 95%+ songs shouting out who they are sampling. Hip hop is almost entirely samples. ?uestlove is basically a human jukebox in terms of his sampling knowledge and awareness

That's pretty cool, since I've started playing guitar 3 years ago that I've been wanting to learn how to play drums too, it seems a lot a fun. You're thinking about the 'Sabotage' video I guess. It's a parody on 70's cop shows, I love that video. That song is actually one that they play live with instruments, is kinda of rock and hip-hop, it's probably their most known track really.
