Please continue making your videos. Pay no attention to the person who so bluntly shamed you for mispronouncing the word bourke. Probably displacement of anger and may have deep problems herself/himself. Your videos are full of valuable info. I also pronounce it as “bourke” so do the breeders in the USA. I went to my first and only bird show a few years ago, and fell in love with the Rosey bourkes specifically the Rubino and Creamino. Thank you for this video. It sure lifted my spirits since I recently lost my budgie, Mango, who was almost 10 years old.

Like you said they're named after Richard Bourke and in germany it's supposed to be pronounced "Börk" while beeing written Bourkesittich, but to be honest everyone pronounces it different here and is fine with that. I also pronounced it wrong at first, sometimes still do and depending on the region people will tend to pronounce it differently, but just because you say a (for many people confusing) name wrong doesn't mean you don't know anything about the species. That's like saying you don't know how to take care of a dog if you can't say the latin name of the breed. Never stop talking about them, you are the reason I even found them and I really don't want to imagine a life without my boys! I love their flying sound and their expeditions on the ground. P.S.: Dio got veeery exited when he heard your birds, called them and tried finding them at my desk.

Richard Bourke, pronounced Burke, was Governor of NSW from 1831-1837, had an Irish heritage, started out as an Irish soldier and helped to bring about the end of penal transportation in Australia and was an advocate for emancipation of convicts, championing land grants to generously give them a chance at life they would never have had in the UK. A hero by modern standards and ahead of his time in liberal thinking. I’m lucky enough to see these pretty parrots in the wild where I live. They like to hang out in large flocks of little corellas and roll around on the grass playing with them. Some of the wild ones have no grey and are fluorescent pink so stand out when running around grasslands. Fitting these parrots are so sweet and named after a sweet man who broke the mould.

Here in the US, everyone calls them "Borks". When I first learned about them and researched them, I found that they were pronounced "Berk" in Australia, so I started off using that pronunciation. Nobody knew what I meant, so I switched over to "Bork" - it may not be technically correct, but I guess it's a form of regional dialect. I don't think it matters that much one way or another! My Bourkes certainly don't care... I can call them borks, berks, babies, bubbies, sweets, sweethearts, sweetcheeps (yes I do call them that and one of my birds actually says sweetcheeps :D) ... They just love the attention! I've never seen Biorke (perhaps another language?) or Bourkeii, but the latter sounds like it comes from their Latin name, Neopsephotus bourkii.

Donna, This is an interesting video, but people need to know that Australian birds are susceptible to cool drafts. Being outside depends on the weather in a person's area. One of our buyers put her two birds in a cage hanging in a tree outside. A neighbor's dog knocked it down and killed both birds. Domestic birds should never be left alone outside. Hawks, cats, raccoons and other things are a danger. BTW I've also been criticized for saying Bork instead of Burk. Neosephotus bourkii. Smiles from Rosie Bird.

I have a question about my budgies Donna. I’ve had two budgies for a year and a half now and they are best friends. Just got a new baby 4-6 months. He was so happy to jump right in their cage but my other two are afraid of him. Will it take time to warm up to him or should I bring him back to the store? 😢
@Loveofpets Жыл бұрын
Hi, it can take a while for them to get to know each other. It's best to quarantine him for at least 30 days. Avoid putting him in the same cage and put cages close to each other after quarantine. The 2 that are bonded may become aggressive with new budgie. It's a 50/50 chance that they will get along but it takes time. Sometimes many months. After quarantine and after cages are close to each other for a few days let them out together and keep an eye on them. You may have to get a 4th budgie to even then out as they like to pair up.
@CrazyPocky3553 жыл бұрын

Hi. I don't find bourkes to be dusty birds especially compared to Cockatiels. Budgies are not very dusty. It's best if you can go visit some bourkes and see if they trigger your allergies. They may have some dust, dander but it's minimal

Do you really need to get two of them? I was hoping one would be happy as I’m home all the time and would rather limit my ownership to one bird only.

Great question... Since they are strongly flock birds, it's best to have 2 or more...for their health and joy. You will see such a difference in their behavior with multiple Rosie's. Enjoy!
