I recently bought a slot cutter kit from Harbor Freight, go ahead and laugh. I paid less than $20USD. I've been really pleased with the work it does. It ranks right up there with bits costing 3 or 4 times I paid...only problem I got the last one.. in their infamous reasoning they no longer carry them........

Great video - thanks so much. Good detail and explanations and close ups were well done. Couple questions - not sure I totally understand the need for the sacrificial fences - was the reason to have a smaller gap than the width of the bit would allow? Also - I've just gotten a set of these slot cutters and installed in my router table with a bosch 1617 - for some reason, even with the bit raised to its highest position, it barely clears the surface of the table, which prevents me from getting it where I want it. Am I missing something about how these are used? Or is it just not possible to use these more than a short distance from the plane of the table?

Just used a slot cutter bit this weekend, and noticed it chews the heck out of the piece as it first goes into the cut. The bit was brand new, and I was using a router table, the piece was pine, entering into the cut from the butt end. Really a messy, uneven cut. Any thoughts?

Put a sacrificial piece of wood in front of your piece and at the end of your piece and you won't have any tear out homie.
